Kael was supposed to recover in 3 days and be on his way home, but there were more than a few glaring issues with his plan. The first was that his body still felt far too weak to move.
"Why have I not recovered even after 3 days? Are they truly planning to hold me hostage this whole time?"
Kael questioned, but even he was not sure what his family was planning. They were not exactly on speaking terms at the moment.
But just because Kael did not feel alright did not mean he was willing to sit back and be held captive. He immediately started gathering his magic power to try and break free from this house and teleport away.
Once he had enough power, he cast his spell...only for it to fail as it bounced off a barrier.
"Darn it! I did not even sense the barrier. Just how dull have my senses become?"
He questioned, now changing the order of priorities in his mind. First, he needed to get rid of the barrier or get out of its range. Then he could think about escaping.
The best time to try this would be during the shift change. People would be distracted, and he would be able to get away. But when the time came for the shift change, there was a problem. And that problem was currently sitting beside Kael, keeping an eye on him.
"Is there something wrong? You look like you want to jump out of bed and leave. Am I making you anxious?"
His mother asked in an amused voice. Her knowing eyes told Kael that she already knew what he had been planning but was willing to humor him.
Kael...had nothing to say regarding this. His mother’s presence was a warning not to think of anything stupid and to stay put.
"It is nothing. I was just a little concerned about how slowly my body is healing. Do you know anything about it?"
It was Kael’s subtle way of asking his mother if she had a hand in his current condition.
From what he recalled, his mother was not interested enough in him to try and cause him trouble. In fact, she had never seemed particularly interested in him at all, which made him question why she was even in his room right now.
She surely had more important things to take care of than staying with Kael at the moment?
But she had settled comfortably beside his bed and seemed to have no intention of going anywhere.
"I had a talk with the doctor, and he told me that your body has cracks that are leaking its energy away. You will have to remain in bed until those cracks heal. That might be why you are not recovering as quickly as you should."
His mother pointed out in a calm voice as she started peeling an apple. But her words hit Kael hard.
’Darn it. Did using that magic hurt me even more than I expected? I should not have done that. Why did I lose my mind and cast such a large-scale spell?’
Kael wanted to hit his past self for what he had done. That had been beyond stupid. And the look on his mother’s face seemed to say the same.
Fortunately, she did not say anything regarding his current situation or the condition of his body. It was a tense yet peaceful moment.
...
Kael made his second attempt at running away during dinner time. It was already late, so security should have relaxed a little. He decided to open his door and, with the little magic he was able to gather, he put the guards to sleep.
Then, it was only a matter of getting out of the medical wing. And fortunately, Kael doubted he would have any problems with that.
He had always had a weak constitution, so the medical wing had been his second home until he ran away. Even if he had forgotten many memories, this place was hard for him to forget.
The halls looked familiar, and he continued to follow the route from his memories. If he recalled correctly, the exit was supposed to be close by, and it was only a matter of time before he would be able to escape...
So why was he still wandering through the hallway, looking for a way out? Where was the exit he was supposed to reach?
Kael realized he was lost, so he started to turn around to find his way back. But a hand landed on his shoulder, making him tense up. He immediately slapped that hand away, but it did not help.
The grip loosened for a few seconds before two hands grabbed his shoulders instead.
"Where do you think you are going, my injured little brother? You’re going to make your injuries worse if you continue to be this stubborn. So let’s go back to bed now."
Emma’s soft voice spoke into Kael’s ear, but it was filled with authority. She sounded like she was unwilling to take no for an answer.
Kael would have usually fought her and tried to escape, but he knew his own strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else.
Right now, he was in no condition to defeat Emma. So the only option left was to follow her back to the medical room.
"So, what were you doing out here?"
Emma’s words sounded like a casual question, but Kael knew that his answer would determine whether he would be placed under even stricter surveillance.
There was no point in lying either because he knew she would see through it immediately. So he decided to tell the truth.
"I was trying to escape this place, but I guess that is no longer possible. So I will return to my room now...are you going to keep following me? For how long?"
Emma was walking behind him, only a few steps away, and she looked like she had no intention of leaving him alone.
"Don’t worry. I’ll only accompany you back to your room and nothing more. That should be fine, right?"
But...was it really going to be fine?
