The corruption sounded far too happy when it told Kael that the spell was complete. Somehow, that happiness chilled Kael to the bone. He had a feeling he had poked something he should not have.
"Don’t look so grim. The pain will be brief, and once you become one of us, you won’t feel lonely either. Now, submit to our powers."
Selene spoke with confidence as her magic rose around Kael. It felt impossible to break, so he did not bother to even try. Instead, he looked at Selene’s smile with a blank expression and tried to use his magic to form a defensive barrier.
But the force of the corruption was too strong for divine power to take shape.
"It’s all useless now. Goodbye, my dear Grand Master Kael. I will miss your resistance. Instead, I would like to welcome you as an ally."
Selene spoke as corruption covered Kael’s barrier. But he was not done, and he refused to give up.
He was going to fight back, even if it ended up with him being in the same condition.
Luckily, his body was much stronger compared to two years ago, and it could withstand the constant strain of magic pouring into it.
"Hmm, you are still struggling? I have to admit that you are far too stubborn. But it is time you give up and come to my side. I will show you-"
A sword stabbed Selene in the stomach, making her stop mid-sentence. The corruption also faded from around Kael as Selene’s concentration wavered because of her sudden wound.
"Who...?"
She asked as she lightly touched her wound. Her shock slowly changed to anger as she looked around for the culprit. And she finally found the brat who dared to hurt her.
However, the brat in question was brimming with divine power strong enough to blind her.
"Tsk, I missed your heart this time. Next time, I will make sure my sword pierces directly through that lump in your chest."
Leon promised with an annoyed look on his face, but it only served to make Selene look even angrier.
"You brat! How dare you attack me? I am the high elder of the elves. Do you think you will get away with this?"
She asked, trying to incite fear in Leon. But he looked at Selene’s face with a bored expression.
"Are you seriously threatening me with such a basic line? You used to be so cool, coming up with all kinds of insults in our past. I’m disappointed to see that you have none of that charm left."
Leon did not even bother to hide his disappointment as he looked at Selene. And his disappointment only served to make the corruption angrier.
"You brat! You think you will get away with this? I am going to get rid of you-"
Seraphina decided to use a strong holy light to block the corrupted Selene and keep her at bay.
"Old ladies like you should not threaten young people like us. You will break our hearts if you continue to behave like this. So won’t you apologize to us?"
Seraphina’s words and actions made the corruption take a step back. Suddenly, the corruption realized that it was surrounded with no way out, and it gritted its teeth in anger.
"Darn it! Where are you all coming from? And why now, when I was so close to the end?"
She asked, trying to get away. But Lyra almost slashed her head off, causing Selene to panic.
"Sorry, but it is your own fault that we are all here. Did you think you could take Kael and we wouldn’t come?"
Lyra taunted, causing Selene to grit her teeth. She was looking for a way out when her eyes fell on three familiar faces, and her expression changed from irritation to one begging for help.
"Lord Adrian, please help me. I am being attacked. These people are discriminating against high elves. I don’t usually ask you for favors, but this time-"
Nathan’s sword was aimed at Selene before she even finished speaking, and he forced her backward.
"Do you think you have the right to talk right now? We caught you red-handed with Kael."
Nathan pointed out, and the corruption racked her brain for a way out. But there was not much she could do in this situation, where she had been caught red-handed.
Adrian put his hand up to make everyone stand down, and then he stepped toward Selene. His eyes were blank, but he was willing to give her a chance to clear her name.
"Selene, you are my fiancée’s younger sister, so I don’t want to doubt your sincerity. However, I am a lord before I am your sister’s fiancé, and you have shown your willingness to cause us trouble. I will have to deal with you."
The corruption stilled at those words, realizing that it still had a chance.
"My lord, I assure you that all I am doing is for the good of this world. Your younger brother is suffering from corruption, and I, as the representative of the high elves, am trying to help him. You can sense his aura for yourself if you don’t believe my words."
Selene immediately tried to turn the situation against Kael once she was caught. And Kael wanted to believe that no one would agree with her words, but it was not a guarantee.
Besides, he knew that his own situation did not look good. He was currently covered in corruption, and the only thing saving him was his holy barrier.
"What bullshit! Kael is-"
Seraphina started to speak when Adrian shot her a glare to make her quiet down. Seraphina did not look happy with that decision, but she did close her mouth with a grudge-filled expression.
"My lady, are you sure you want to accuse my brother of such a thing? Being affected by corruption is not a small matter. You do realize that, right?"
Adrian asked, and Selene nodded.
"Of course, my lord. But can’t you sense this dense corrupted mana coming from his direction? All I wanted to do was try to help him using my high elf powers."
