"Kael, come and join me. I promise it will be a new world where nothing can hurt you."

Selene promised as she raised her hand, and spikes of ice started to gather around her staff. With a swing of her staff, they began to rain down on Kael as well, forcing him to form a shield around himself and Lyra.

He was not surprised that Selene chose to attack him to show her affection, but Lyra looked furious beside him.

"Tsk, what the hell is this? I thought this was a confession, not a death sentence. Don’t you have anything better to do than harass Kael? He is clearly not interested in you."

Lyra pointed out as she attacked Selene. But her powers were stopped by the calamity.

Kael had to extend his barrier toward Lyra to protect her from the effects of corruption as well. But that only served to make Selene even angrier.

"Who are you to get between me and Kael when we are talking? This is a matter between us. Do not butt in, you outsider."

Selene’s powers cracked Kael’s first layer of protection, but he quickly formed a second, giving Lyra just enough time to get out of the way.

"Tsk, what is wrong with this bitch? Hey, can’t you even handle a little truth? Kael is not your property to do whatever you want with. Now, snap back to your senses."

Lyra gritted her teeth as she attacked again. But unfortunately, her attacks were not having much of an effect.

She did consider letting the beast inside her out, but Kael noticed her decision and yelled at her.

"Lyra, there is no point in releasing your power. The only thing that can harm corruption is holy power. You won’t be able to do a thing if you don’t possess it."

It was an unfortunate fact that made Lyra bite her lip and step away. She knew in her mind that Kael was right. But that did not mean she was ready to accept that she did not even have a chance in this fight.

"Darn it! Who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do? Listen here! I am going to fight and I am going to win. So don’t hold me back-"

She was so angry that she missed the next attack. But Kael was standing in front of her in an instant, and his shield covered both Lyra and himself from that attack.

Lyra felt shaken by what happened, and she looked at Kael with a wide-eyed expression of betrayal.

"You...! What did you do that for? I could have handled it just fine-"

"I just did not want you to get hurt. You have a tendency to run headfirst into danger."

Kael reminded Lyra, and she felt even more foolish for not realizing that he was right. But her heart was not ready to accept this.

Otherwise, she would also have to admit that she was powerless in the current situation. And Lyra had never been powerless in her life.

"I can still help! I can fight-"

"I know you can fight and that you can help. But what use is it if it’s going to cost you your life? I would rather have you be a coward and alive than brave and dead. After all, I promised you that we are family, right?"

Kael reminded Lyra, and her breath hitched in her throat at his words.

She wanted to be angry at him and at herself, but Kael calling himself her family made her weak.

Her head rested on Kael’s shoulder as she complained next.

"This is unfair! I cannot believe you are pulling such a trick on me. I should have your head for it."

Lyra grumbled while burying her face deeper into his shoulder. And Kael allowed her to do this without saying a word. He just chuckled and rubbed her back to reassure her a little more.

"It will be fine, Lyra. Now, do me a favor and call for the others. They deserve to know what is happening here."

Kael told Lyra, and she nodded. Her eyes were filled with determination as she broke into a sprint.

"I will go and get the others. Don’t you dare die until then. Do you understand?"

Lyra yelled, and Kael quickly protected her from another attack. He looked back at Selene’s body, and she seemed to be frowning.

"I don’t think I like that girl’s face. Just looking at her makes me feel irritated. Can you stop blocking my attacks on her? I am asking nicely this time."

Selene...no, the calamity, was asking nicely this time. And that was what made Kael feel a chill go down his spine.

But he still suppressed that chill and looked Selene in the eyes.

"Sorry, I cannot do that. I need Lyra to make it back home. Meanwhile, why don’t you and I have a dance? The winner takes it all."

Kael readied his power and launched it toward Selene. But the corruption quickly recovered from his attacks.

This calamity was on a different level than anything he had ever known. He needed to unleash his full power to even stand a chance. But would his body be able to handle such a strain?

’Not that I have a choice. I will have to stall until Lyra comes back with the Hero.’

[Lyra’s Trust: +20]

[Lyra’s Affection: +5]

[Mental Stability: 50%]

[Affection: 95% (Raise to 100% to enter the destruction prevention route)]

[Trust: 90%]

This was an unexpected surprise, but one Kael was happy to see. However, he was no longer sure he could trust the world magic in this regard.

"Hey, stop paying attention to something else and pay attention to me. I will not allow you to abandon me after making me like this. This is all your fault! If only I had never seen that vision..."

Selene yelled, her emotions mixing with the calamity’s.

Kael knew that her words were not trustworthy, but he still felt curious about what she wanted to tell him and what had made her like this.

Unfortunately, he had a feeling he would never be able to know.
