[The dragons have started their march. This means that they will be heading to the central plains soon. They have not declared it officially, but it is clear that this is a subjugation march. I will keep you posted about it.]
The letter was from Ken Russle.
According to the White Knight Sword Master of the holy temple, the dragons had started to mobilize, which could only indicate that they were about to break their truce and join the fight.
Most people would not think much of it, but Kael, who knew the future, remembered the dragons’ movement during this time for only one reason—to root out corruption.
However, their march had ended up giving birth to the spark that started the final battle, and it all happened because their king became corrupted.
Dragons were a highly cultured species, but they also relied heavily on their instincts. They were also one of the few species in this world that obeyed their king or queen above all else.
In return, their sovereign was blessed with divine protection, granting them wisdom and power.
It was a perfect cycle until corruption entered the equation.
In Kael’s last life, the divine protection had been broken by someone, which resulted in the Dragon King becoming corrupted, leaving all the dragons with no choice but to obey their sovereign.
Those who tried to defy him died beneath the blades of their comrades, and it was a tragic fate overall.
"Should I send a letter to the dragons, warning them about what is going to happen? But with how proud those creatures are, they might take it the wrong way and declare me their enemy."
Dragons were prideful creatures, and if you told them they were being corrupted, most of them would not even give you the time of day before throwing you out.
So Kael knew that a direct confrontation was out of the question. But he still had options...maybe.
"Let’s see...! I would need a lot of evidence to make them change their minds—"
"Is there something you are thinking about? You can share your worries with me."
Leon walked up behind him before asking the question. His sudden appearance startled Kael, and his heart skipped a beat before calming down.
He looked back and shook his head.
"You don’t have to worry about it. I will resolve my own problem before it becomes everyone else’s problem as well."
Kael told Leon, but the hero did not seem to find his words reassuring.
"Do you still think I am a kid? I will be an adult in one month, so if you have anything to say to me, you should just say it instead of worrying about it."
Leon pointed out, and Kael felt a little startled to realize that Leon was right. His birthday was approaching, and soon he would be an adult...
Not that it meant much, since he was already taller than Kael anyway.
’Tsk, this is not fair. I want to build up my body as well. But I don’t want to work for it. Should I make a spell...’
That would be a waste of magic and authority. Kael would just be wasting his resources by doing all this...
But sometimes, it was about more than just resources, right? It was about his dignity as a man...
"Let’s head back and eat for now. You look exhausted. Some food would do you some good."
Leon pointed out, and Kael forgot all about his desire to build up his body and instead focused on the familiar taste of home he had missed.
The dragons would become a problem that he would have to deal with sooner or later, but he would get to it later.
For now, it was important for him to rest and recover.
...
"My dear brethren, tomorrow, we shall march to rid this world of corruption. Those who do not wish to join us are free to face death."
The dragon sovereign declared, making everyone in front of him roar in agreement. He was overly excited and eager to begin this campaign against corruption, and his people shared his views.
However, not everyone agreed with his idea of destroying everything until there was not a single trace of corruption left. And the most vocal among them was his own sister.
"Tsk, Brother, you need to think your plan through a little more. We cannot just charge into corruption however we want. We will get torn apart."
The sovereign’s sister reminded him, but he was beyond reason. He looked at his sister with a blank expression that barely concealed his anger.
"Are you trying to hold this king back from his destiny? You bring shame and dishonor upon my name. Thus, I shall see to it that you are punished."
Those words immediately made his sister flinch, and she quickly backtracked.
"I am not trying to challenge your decisions, Brother. I am in complete agreement with them. However, I would like to propose a strategy to make them even better and more efficient. Don’t you want a quick and overwhelming victory to show everyone your might?"
She asked, and her foolish brother paused to look at her.
There was suspicion in his eyes toward his clever sister, but the way she had framed her words was specifically designed to appeal to his pride.
The dragon sovereign soon let out a laugh as he looked at her with a pleased expression.
"You are right, my dear sister. I do need to show everyone that we dragons are superior to everyone else. How could we be inferior with our incredible strength and magical capabilities? Not to mention, my four arms and magnificent tail. Anyone would be dying to be with me."
The sovereign boasted, showing off his body to his sister, which made her flinch. But she pretended to agree with him.
"You are absolutely right, Brother. Soon, everyone will praise your name even more. But before that, we should make preparations—"
She was about to suggest that he calm down when someone walked into the middle of their meeting. She carried the scent of ancient magic and something else, which made the sister flinch.
She could tell that trouble had arrived.
