Kael had not expected to end up on enemy grounds to scout what was going to happen next. But he had somehow found himself doing exactly that before he knew it.
Ken’s letter had told him that he had seen movement from the dragons, and Kael had been by his side before he knew it. Right now, they both looked out at the sky where active dragons were patrolling around, trying to break into human territory.
"Those stupid dragons are itching for a fight. Shall we give it to them?"
Ken asked, smacking his fist against his open palm to show how eager he was to fight the dragons.
But he was the only one who looked remotely excited. No one else shared his enthusiasm about taking on the flying dragons.
"I am sorry, sir, but I don’t think I am ready to lose my life."
Someone complained, raising their hands in an "I surrender" pose, but instead of getting angry, Ken just laughed even harder.
"Don’t worry! You won’t die fighting a dragon-"
The soldiers looked relieved at Ken’s words, but he was not done speaking.
"-At worst, you might get hurt and lose a limb or two. But that should be better than losing your life, right?"
Ken pointed out, and the worry returned to people’s faces at his twisted joke.
Kael ended up smacking Ken on the head, which made the older teen stop joking like that.
"There is no need to scare everyone by telling them that they would lose their limbs. If you are not going to say anything positive, then perhaps you should not say anything at all."
He pointed out, and Ken instantly pouted at those words.
"Don’t say that! Do you know how devastating it is to not be able to spread awareness? Anyway, I understand where you are coming from. You all are free to explore the area, but try not to get too close to a dragon."
Ken sighed before he got serious.
The White Knight was a good person...most of the time. But he had a tendency to be mischievous, which made it hard for people to look at him favorably.
Kael could see even Iris and Leon giving him tired looks. And they were people who had actually worked with him for a long time.
’I can already tell that this is going to be a long collaboration just by looking at Ken’s behavior.’
He sighed and decided that he needed to take a small walk in order to clear his head. Otherwise, he would surely snap at Ken and say some choice words he should not.
"Ken, I will be heading out for a small walk. Is there anything I need to be aware of?"
Kael asked in a calm voice, and Ken struck a thinking pose before he shook his head.
"I don’t believe that you need to be careful about anything. You can take care of yourself just fine, and I believe in you. But if anything...can you be a little more careful of the local environment? I would much rather it not get damaged."
Ken pointed out, and Kael nodded. He intended to take the walk alone when Seraphina decided to join him.
She silently walked beside him without saying much, and once she joined, so did Leon and Iris.
Elena wanted to join as well, but Lyra grabbed her as she was dragged away by Ken to discuss military tactics.
"It’s a nice day. Why don’t we exchange some knowledge about our military tactics, Demon Queen Lyra?"
Ken sounded excited, but his grip felt like a death sentence to the poor demon queen.
"No, I don’t want to. You cannot make me speak. Hey, let me go! Someone, help me out. Kael...! Come back here."
The demon queen yelled, but she was on her own now. Her master had decided that she needed to make better use of her time and knowledge, even if she did not want to.
Kael heard her desperate cries, but he purposely ignored them.
’I am sorry, Lyra. But someone needs to deal with Ken and act as a sacrifice. Your actions won’t be forgotten by me.’
...
"The mountains are nice. The air feels fresh, and there is no smell of magic in the air. I like it."
Seraphina took a deep breath as she calmed herself down. There was a smile on her face that looked genuinely happy, and Kael felt satisfied as he watched her.
He was about to move in her direction when he noticed something moving in the grass. It was shining, which caught his attention, and Kael reached toward it to grab it.
It turned out to be a dragon barely bigger than his palm, and it was hurt.
More importantly, it was under a powerful curse that was making it retain its tiny form.
"Seraphina!"
Kael called, and the saintess nodded before she walked over to him.
"Teacher, it seems like we have a problem."
Seraphina commented as she looked at the injured dragon in his hands. The dragon was thrashing around in order to get free, but Kael held on to it even tighter as it struggled. He was afraid that the dragon might hurt the saintess, so he took countermeasures to prevent this.
His magic bound the dragon in place, making sure that it was not able to injure itself further. Then Seraphina’s soft hands touched it and found the wounds.
"Tsk, it looks like the wound is deep, and it has started to corrupt her body. Seraphina, we will need to do a lot to stabilize her. Let’s get ready."
Kael ordered the Saintess, and she nodded before she started chanting her vows, causing her divine power to surge. It closed around the wound and started to stitch it together.
The dragon was as good as new in no time, but it was still afraid of strangers.
It was going to take some time to coax it out of its shell.
"Teacher, what are we going to do now?"
Seraphina asked, and Kael sighed.
"For now, we will take it back and hear what it has to say."
