Konrad paused. At this hour, the vast majority of his administrative staff were down in the lower logistical wings, frantically executing Princess Elise’s orders to halt railway production and stockpile munitions.
A guard would have shouted his presence... Therefore, there was only one person in the palace who could bypass the security perimeter unannounced.
"Come in," Konrad called out.
The door creaked open, and Queen Katarina stepped into the dimly lit study.
She quietly closed the door behind her and walked toward the drafting table.
Since the day Konrad had taken the throne, Katarina had quietly become the emotional and diplomatic anchor of the palace.
While Konrad engineered the machines and Elise balanced the terrifying ledgers, Katarina navigated the treacherous waters of the surviving Swabian nobility with a grace that bordered on the supernatural.
She possessed a natural, magnetic charm that made even the most bitter feudal lords eager to seek her favor.
"Is the hum of the drafting room preferable to your bed?" Katarina asked, a warm smile touching her lips.
"The boiler schematics refuse to calculate themselves," Konrad replied, his intense demeanor instantly softening as he looked at his wife.
She wore a simple gown of midnight-blue velvet, the color highlighting the sharp, intelligent spark in her eyes.
She stepped closer.
"I missed you," Katarina murmured, leaning against the edge of the drafting table and looking over the array of charcoal lines.
Konrad set his T-square down and stepped around the table.
"And I missed you," Konrad said quietly. "Is the palace secure for the evening?"
"Secure and entirely terrified of your sister," Katarina laughed softly, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Elise is currently in the lower vaults. She spent the entire afternoon cross-referencing grain inflation in Naples, and by supper, she had apparently captured the Habsburg’s premier intelligence operative."
Konrad chuckled, shaking his head. "Lord Kinsky’s prized shadow. And how did Elise handle the infiltration?"
"She hired him," Katarina said, raising an amused eyebrow. "She offered him a vineyard in Tuscany to feed counterfeit reports back to Vienna. I must admit, Konrad, watching a nineteen-year-old girl dismantle the Holy Roman Empire’s spy network is both awe-inspiring and profoundly unsettling."
"..." Konrad smiled proudly.
Katarina leaned over the table, her gaze drifting away from Konrad and locking onto the highly classified artillery schematics.
She studied the internal geometry of the breech-block for a long moment.
"If the combustion chamber is seated against the locking pin," Katarina observed, tracing a finger in the air above the vellum, "won’t the kinetic back-blast sheer the iron threads after a dozen sustained volleys?"
Konrad stared at his wife in silence.
If this intellectual escalation continued, he was going to have to appoint her to the Ministry of Engineering...
First, she was charming the Swabian barons, then she was analyzing supply lines with Elise, and now she was critiquing the metallurgical tolerances of his experimental artillery.
Seeing Konrad’s speechless expression, Katarina tucked a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear and smiled innocently.
"I have been reading the physics primers you mandated for the polytechnic academy," she explained, her voice dropping to a softer, more intimate register. "I find the concept of kinetic transfer... fascinating."
Konrad reached out, capturing her hand. He pulled her slightly closer, the scent of lavender and clean linen cutting through the omnipresent smell of industrial smoke that clung to his uniform.
"You are a remarkably dangerous woman, Katarina," Konrad murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips.
"The guards are stationed at the end of the hall," Katarina whispered, leaning up on her toes. "We are alone."
Konrad closed the distance, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss. The pressure of the looming war, the hundred and forty thousand men marching for his borders, and the endless calculations of the foundries all melted away in the warmth of her touch.
For a few precious moments, the Kingdom of Alemannia was entirely still.
Katarina pulled back, a rosy flush warming her cheeks, and offered a breathless laugh.

Hans sat cross-legged on the floor of the Jaeger barracks, his hands mangling a delicate brass caliper. He was staring at a manual filled with diagrams of steam pressure valves and trajectory matrices.
"You are holding the caliper upside down, you absolute idiot," Lukas sighed, sitting on the cot opposite him.
Lukas was running an oiled rag down the blued-steel barrel of his grooved rifle.
The barracks were quiet, most of the regiment currently deployed to the perimeter walls to oversee the new artillery emplacements.
"Why do I need to know the atmospheric boiling point of water?" Hans groaned, tossing the manual onto the wooden floorboards in frustration. "I am a heavy weapons loader! My job is to carry the brass cartridges to the Gatling cart and turn the crank when the officer yells fire! I don’t need to read a book to turn a crank!"
"You do if you want to operate the new traction engines without detonating the boiler and killing the entire squad," Lukas retorted, holding his rifle up to the lantern light to check the grooving. "If you don’t understand the pressure gauges, you die."
"I survived Veszprém just fine without a polytechnic degree," Hans grumbled, rubbing his temples.
"You survived Veszprém because you stood on a wall and dropped bullets into a funnel," Lukas shook his head, dipping a small brush into a tin of solvent. "The new mobile artillery uses compressed steam. Baron Klaus designed these manuals so the infantry wouldn’t blow themselves to pieces the moment a valve sticks."
Hans stared blankly at the discarded manual, then looked up at his friend with a deeply wounded expression. "But there are so many fractions, Lukas. Who puts letters inside of a math equation? It makes no sense. An ’X’ is a letter, not a number."
Lukas couldn’t help but laugh at the misery on the larger man’s face.
"Look at it this way," Lukas offered, tossing his oily rag onto the cot. "The Austrians and the Spanish are marching toward us with pikes. The manual tells us exactly how much Swabian powder is required to punch through their breastplates at three hundred yards."
"I still don’t want to read it," Hans muttered stubbornly, picking the caliper back up and poking it experimentally.
"Then don’t read it," Lukas smirked, racking the bolt of his rifle. "Just go sharpen your socket bayonet, Hans. When the traction engine explodes because you forgot to bleed the excess steam, at least your blade will be shiny."
Hans paused, looking at the manual on the floor, and then at the brass gauges being installed on the vehicles in the testing yard outside their window.
"Fine," Hans sighed, picking the book back up. "What does the little triangle symbol mean again?"
