Surprise extra chapter! Sorry I'm to tired to add any pictures right now I need to rest.
Kris stood in front of me, the boy I used to be, the boy I had been forced to leave behind. The vault's darkness clung to him, sharpening every angle of his face, making him look more real than any memory. He had already torn through every lie I'd told myself, every fragile piece of acceptance I had tried to build.
But now he went still.
Utterly still.
His eyes locked onto mine, and I felt something in the air tighten, like the world itself was holding its breath.
Then he asked the question I had feared more than anything.
"What do you want to be?"
My breath stopped.
I had never answered it. Not even to myself.
Kris stepped closer, his voice low and steady.
"Not what you were forced to be. Not what happened to you. Not what everyone expects. Not what you pretend you've accepted."
His eyes burned.
"What do you want to be?"
I felt my knees weaken. My chest tightened until I could barely breathe. The truth clawed at my throat, desperate and terrified and raw.
"I..." My voice cracked. "I don't know."
Kris shook his head. "Yes, you do."
I swallowed hard, tears blurring my vision. "No...I-"
"You've known for a long time," he said. "You just didn't want to say it. Not to me. Not to anyone. Ty Not even to yourself."
I felt myself shaking.
Kris stepped closer, close enough that I could feel the heat of his grief, his fear.
"You didn't hate it forever," he said quietly. "You hated it at first. You hated the shock. You hated the loss. You hated the fear."
His voice softened, but it didn't lose its edge.
"But you didn't hate being her."
My breath trembled.
"You stopped hating it," Kris said. "And that scared you more than anything."
I felt tears spill down my cheeks.
"You liked being her," he said. "You liked the way people saw you. You liked the way you felt. You liked the way your body moved. You liked the way your voice sounded."
He swallowed hard.
"You liked being Zora."
The words shattered something inside me.
I sank to my knees, hands shaking, breath tearing out of me in ragged gasps. I felt like I was breaking apart, like every piece of me was being peeled open and exposed.
Kris knelt in front of me, his voice barely above a whisper.
"What do you want to be?"
The truth rose up inside me, terrifying, trembling, desperate.
And I finally said it.
"I- I want to be her."
Kris didn't move.
"I want to be Zora," I whispered. "I want to be the girl I became. I want to be the girl I've been trying so hard not to admit I like being."
My breath shook.
"I didn't abandon you," I said. "I didn't erase you. I didn't kill you. You're still part of me. You always will be."
Kris's eyes softened.
"But I'm not you anymore," I said. "And I don't want to be."
The darkness pulsed around us.
"I want to be her," I whispered again. "I want to be Zora. All of her. All of me."
My voice cracked.
"And I... I... I HAVE FEELINGS FOR Lucas!!!."
My cheeks frosted hard when I said that.
Kris's expression flickered, pain, surprise, but something like acceptance.
"I'm going to tell him," I said. "I'm going to choose my future. Not yours. Not the one I lost. Not the one I was forced into."
I wiped my eyes with shaking hands.
"I'm choosing mine."
Kris stared at me for a long moment, silent, unmoving.
Then he exhaled slow, trembling, almost relieved.
He didn't look like a ghost anymore. He looked like a memory.
An end.
A part of me that could finally rest.
Kris didn't speak right away.
He just stared at me....the boy I used to be, the boy I no longer was. There was no anger in his eyes. No accusation. No disgust. No disappointment.
Just... something softer.
Something I hadn't seen in him since before everything changed.
He exhaled slowly, the sound barely audible in the heavy darkness of the vault.
"You really said it, huh" he murmured.
I swallowed hard. My chest felt tight, but not in the same painful way as before. It felt full, and fragile, trembling, but peacful.
"I meant it," I realised I wanted this….truly.
Kris looked down at his hands, flexing them like he wasn't sure they were real. Then he looked back at me, and the expression on his face made my breath catch.
It was relief.
And something like pride.
"You want to be her," he said. "You really do don't you?"
I nodded, tears blurring my vision. "Yes."
"You're choosing her," he said. "Choosing yourself."
"Yes."
"And Lucas."
My breath trembled. "Yes."
Kris's jaw tightened, not with anger, but with emotion he didn't know how understand. He looked away for a moment, blinking hard, then back at me.
"You're not abandoning me," he said quietly. "You're not erasing me?"
"No," I whispered. "I never could."
He stepped closer, He didn't look like threat or a wound anymore. He looked like an important part of who I was.
"You carried me for so long," he said. "Longer than you should have."
My throat tightened.
"But you don't need me anymore."
The words hit me harder than anything he'd said before like a truth settling into place.
"I'll always be part of you," Kris said. "But I don't get to choose your future."
He swallowed, voice trembling.
"You do."
I felt tears spill down my cheeks.
Kris reached out placing his hand on my shoulder. It was felt warm, familiar, like the echo of a life I once lived.
"I'm proud of you," he said softly smiling at me.
My breath broke.
And then the darkness around him began to shift.
It was slow, and gentle.
His edges blurred, like ink dissolving in water. His form softened, fading at the edges. Like I was was letting him go...or maybe he was letting himself go.
"Kris—" My voice cracked.
He shook his head, still smiling.
"You're Zora," he said. "You finally said it. You finally chose it."
His voice grew faint.
"Now live it."
I reached for him, but my hand passed through his fading shape like mist.
Kris looked at me one last time — eyes soft, warm, accepting and winked.
"Goodbye.... Miss Queen."
And then he was gone.
The darkness swallowed the last trace of him, leaving only the echo of his presence and the truth he had forced me to face.
I stood alone.
But I didn't feel divided.
I felt whole…. New
The chamber didn't collapse after Kris faded.
It changed.
The darkness softened, folding inward like a great curtain being drawn back. The symbols carved into the stone walls pulsed with a warm, steady glow, and the air felt thick with magic.
I felt her before I saw her.
A strange, impossible recognition.
Then she stepped out of the darkness.
Me.
But older.
Stronger.
Steadier.
Her hair was longer, her posture confident, her eyes bright with a certainty I had never felt. She looked like someone who had lived through storms and come out whole.
She looked like the woman I could become.
She smiled when she saw me.
"Hi me," she said softly.
My breath caught. "You're... me."
"Yes," she said. "The you that comes after."
I swallowed hard. "You're real?"
"Real enough to talk. "she said."Real enough to show you what you're choosing."
She walked closer, her steps gentle, familiar. She didn't touch me she simply stood beside me, letting me feel her presence.
"You did something very brave," she said. "You told yourself the truth."
My throat tightened. "I had to."
"You did," she agreed. "And now you're ready for the last part."
I looked around the chamber. "What part?"
She smiled a soft, knowing smile.
"Your future."
A sound echoed through the chamber.
Soft.
High.
Fragile.
A baby's cry.
My breath stopped.
I turned toward the sound, but there was nothing there.
Just empty air.
But the cry came again unmistakably real, and alive.
I looked at myself, heart pounding. "What... what was that?"
She glanced over her shoulder at something I couldn't see, and her expression softened in a way that made my chest ache.
"It's nothing you need to worry about," she said gently.
"That was a baby," I whispered. "I heard a baby."
Future‑me smile widened, warm and secretive.
"It's a surprise."
I swallowed hard.
She reached out and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear, a gesture so gentle it made my eyes sting.
"You chose to be you," she said. "Fully. Completely, and ithout fear."
I nodded, breath trembling. "I did."
"You chose your future," she said. "Not Kris's. Not the one you lost. Not the one you were forced into."
"Yes."
"And you chose Lucas."
Frost rushed to my cheeks. "I... yes."my voice small, but firm.
Future‑me laughed softly, not teasing. " I remember that frost...goodness I was so easily flusterd." she continued.
She looked at me then. Her eyes trying to tell me something, but I didn't understand.
"He's important. More than you know."
I felt my heart pound. "Does he..." she stopped me from going on.
"You'll find out," she said. "Soon."
The baby's cry echoed again
I shivered. "Why can't I see it?"
Future‑Zora stepped closer, her expression gentle.
"Because you're not ready to know everything yet," she said. "But you're ready to choose."
I looked at her, and realized something that made my breath catch.
She wasn't just confident, or strong.
She was happy.
Truly, deeply happy.
And that happiness wasn't something she stumbled into. It was something she chose.
Tears spilled down my cheeks.
"I want that," I whispered. "I want to be happy like that."
She took my hands in hers.
"You will be," she said.
The chamber pulsed with light.
Future‑me squeezed my hands once.
"Go back," she said. "Your life is waiting, and Carlie is going to start panicking."
Future‑me smiled. Her eyes going distant for a moment. I saw something there, again…just for a moment, but couldn't place it.
And then she dissolved into light.
Magic surged.
The chamber shook.
The vault pulled me back with purpose.
I was going home.
My eyes snapped open, and the world looked the same as it had before the trial. Same stone beneath my feet. Same cold air brushing my skin. Same faint hum of magic in the walls.
But I wasn't the same.
Something inside me felt rearranged.
Aligned.
Settled.
My heartbeat felt deeper.
My breath felt steadier.
My body felt like it finally belonged to me.
I felt like Zora.
I was calmer.
But I didn't remember why.
A faint echo lingered in my ears—soft, distant, fragile.
But what was it.
I froze.
My chest tightened with a strange warmth, a strange ache, but the memory slipped away the moment I reached for it. I couldn't grasp it. I couldn't hold it. It dissolved like mist between my fingers.
"What... was that?" I whispered.
I touched my chest, feeling the warmth of the vault's magic humming under my skin. It felt familiar, comforting, but I didn't know why.
"Zora..."
A voice spoke, really close.
I blinked, turning my head.
"Zora... hey, Zora, you listening?"
Carlie's voice. She was looking at me with exasperation.
I gasped, not because she startled me, but because hearing her felt like stepping fully back into the world. Her tone carried that familiar mix of concern and irritation she always used when she thought I was spacing out.
I turned toward her slowly.
Carlie stood a few feet away, hands on her hips, eyebrows raised, her expression somewhere between worried and annoyed.
"Zora?" she said again, softer this time. "You okay?"
I opened my mouth—
but nothing came out.
Because I didn't remember. It was like a blank.
Just a strange, hollow ache in my chest and a faint echo of a cry that didn't belong in this world.
"I..." My voice trembled. "I don't know."
Carlie's expression softened immediately. "What do you mean?"
"I think..." I whispered. "I think something happened."
Carlie stepped closer. "With the vault?"
I nodded.
"What happened?"
I shook my head slowly.
"I don't remember."
Carlie blinked. "At all?"
"No," I whispered. "Just... something. A feeling. Like I'm different. Like something changed."
Carlie studied me for a long moment, her eyes narrowing slightly.
"You do feel different," she said. "You look different too."
I swallowed hard.
"I heard something," I said quietly. "Before I woke up."
"What?"
I hesitated.
"I'm not shure."
"Not shure?" she repeated.
I nodded, my throat tight. "I don't know why. I don't know what it means. I just... heard it."
Carlie's expression shifted with confusion, worry, something else she didn't say aloud.
I looked down at my hands.
They felt warm.
Steady.
Mine.
But the memory was gone.
All I had was the echo.
And the myself.
