The vault was still humming.
The crystal still glowed.
Colette still held my hand like she was afraid I might vanish if she let go.
"I exist to serve you, Lady Zora," she said again, bowing so deeply her white hair brushed the gold‑covered floor.
Charlie was watching me like she expected something to snap.
She always did after moments like this, bracing for the tremble in my hands, the tightness in my throat, the way my thoughts used to scatter like startled birds. But who could blame her she was right to worry.
But none of that happened.
I felt... steady.
Not numb.
Not detached.
Just quiet inside in a way I didn't realize but didn't hate either.
"Maybe we should get an idea of the worth of this treasure," I said, my voice coming out smooth, almost casual.
Charlie's head jerked up.
She stared at me like she was waiting for the punchline.
"...Zora?" she said slowly. "Are you okay?"
I nodded, the motion easy, unforced.
"Yeah. I feel different. More relaxed. It's kind of nice not to be panicking for once."
Her eyebrows climbed like she was watching a sunrise she didn't trust.
"Relaxed," she echoed. "You fainted...,and now you're relaxed."
I shrugged.
"I don't know. I just... don't feel like worrying over stuff anymore."
Charlie blinked at me, then blinked again, like she was trying to recalibrate.
"You're serious."
"I am."
She stepped closer, searching my face for cracks.
But there weren't any.
I felt grounded.
Warm.
Like the air around me wasn't pressing in anymore.
"Okay," she said finally, voice softening. "But I'm still watching you.”
"I know," I said, and the smile that came with it didn't feel forced. I hugged her. " Your the best big sister a girl could ask for Charlie!"
She looked surprised at my words. Hugging me back. “Y...yea squirt. You to. “And then she smiled. “ Good to see you back to normal for once.
“What do you mean normal… I've always been normal…” I said
We looked at each other, and then we both laughed at that.
The treasure glittered around us,
And I was just... here.
Behind us, the elder finally found his voice.
He didn't speak.
He gasped.
A sharp, broken sound, like someone had punched the breath out of him.
I turned just in time to see him stumble backward, one hand clutching his chest, the other trembling violently as he pointed at Colette.
"No..." he whispered. "No, it cannot be..."
Colette blinked, her wussy expression returning instantly. "Oh! Hello old guy! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to startle you..."
He dropped to his knees.
Actually dropped, and I winced, that had to have hurt him.
His staff clattered to the floor, echoing through the vault.
"By the First Queen..." he breathed. "By Isolde's name... it's her. It's truly her."
Carlie looked between us. "Her who?"
The elder's voice shook. "The White Sentinel."
Colette squeaked, flustered. "Oh! That's—um—that's me. I think. It's one of my... titles."
The elder stared at her like she was a miracle.
"No one has seen the White Sentinel in over a millennium," he whispered. "She was said to be the Queen's final creation. A guardian of impossible power. A living construct of pure magic. A maid‑form golem who could command the vault, the estate, the defenses...everything."
Colette's cheeks flushed pink, her hands fluttering nervously. "Oh dear... that sounds very dramatic when you say it like that..."
Carlie pointed at her. "You're telling me she's a legendary super‑weapon maid?"
Colette squeaked again. "I'm not a weapon, Lady Charlie!! I'm a maid! I clean things! And organize! And occasionally vaporize intruders if necessary but only if they're very rude!"
Carlie's eyes widened. "Vaporize—"
"Only rude ones!" Colette insisted, horrified.
The elder crawled closer, reverent, trembling. "She was said to awaken only for a true Nightbearer. Only for one who carried the spark. Only for the rightful heir."
His gaze lifted to me.
"Lady Zora... you touched the crystal. You awakened her. You truly are the Nightbearer."
Colette stepped closer, her expression softening into something gentle and warm.
"I knew it the moment I saw you," she said quietly. "Your spark is very bright."
Carlie whispered, "Zora... this is insane."
The elder bowed his head to the floor.
"I knew you were... but still to see the sentinel acknowledge the two of you, and Hestia appearing herself at the coronation. I am simply overwhelmed. To think I would be so fortunate to see this day come in my old age....Nightbearer... No my Queen." the elder slowly with effort sank to his knees an bowed. "Hilguard is yours."
I stepped forward quickly, the sound of coins shifting under my boots echoing through the vault.
"Please, Elder," I said, reaching out before I even thought about it. "You don't need to bow."
He froze.
Slowly, he lifted his head, eyes wide and wet, staring at me like I had just offered him the sun.
"Lady Zora..." His voice trembled. "You are the Nightbearer. The heir of Isolde. The one who awakened the White Sentinel. I—"
"Elder," I said again, softer this time. "Please. Stand. You don't need to bow to me."
He swallowed hard, his throat working visibly. For a moment, I thought he might refuse. But then, with a shaky breath, he pushed himself upright, leaning heavily on his staff. His hands trembled. His eyes didn't leave mine.
"You speak with her grace," he whispered. "Just as the legends said."
Colette perked up beside me, her red eyes glowing. "Oh! Yes! Lady Zora is very gracious!" Then she shrank into wussy mode, hands fluttering nervously. "I mean—um—she seems gracious. I haven't known her very long. But she feels gracious."
Carlie snorted. "Colette, you're adorable."
Colette squeaked, flustered. "Oh! Thank you! I—um—I try."
The elder wiped his eyes, still staring at me like I was a miracle.
"Lady Zora," he said, voice steadying, "you must understand... the Nightbearer vault is not merely wealth. It is history. Power. Legacy. And you—" He gestured weakly toward Colette. "You awakened the Sentinel. That alone proves your claim."
Colette nodded proudly. "Yes! She did! She touched the crystal and...wooosh...everything activated at once. It was very dramatic."
Carlie muttered deadpan, "You don't say."
The elder bowed his head, not fully this time, just enough to show respect without collapsing again.
"Forgive my reaction," he said. "I never believed I would live to see this day. I mean I knew you were, I didn't doubt it... but to see this place, and you be recognized by it...."
Please elder, don't change on me now. Your a trusted friend, and wise, I would be stupid not to recognize that. Please just be you ok.."
His eyes softened. " We are truly fortunate to have such a wonderful person as our Queen."
Colette stepped closer, her voice soft and warm.
"Lady Zora," she said, "you asked for an inventory. Would you like me to begin listing the categories?"
Carlie groaned. "Oh gods, here we go."
I exhaled slowly, my heart calm, after so long of being flustered.
"Yes," I said. "Let's start."
Colette brightened instantly.
"As you wish. Lady Zora," she said, voice slipping into a precise, melodic cadence she apparently used for official vault functions, "I will begin with the raw currency totals."
Charlie leaned in.
I just breathed
Colette lifted her hands.
"The Nightbearer Vault contains," she said, "approximately nine hundred and twelve million gold crowns."
Charlie made a noise like she'd swallowed her own tongue.
Colette continued, unfazed.
"Additionally, five hundred and eighty‑four million silver marks."
"And seve hundred and sixty‑one million copper crescents."
Charlie stared at me.
I stared at the treasure.
Colette folded her hands neatly.
"These totals represent only the liquid currency stores," she added gently. "Not the enchanted assets, relics, constructs, or heirlooms. If we Take those into account the numbers goes up exponentially."
Charlie whispered, "Zora... that's... that's—"
I exhaled,"I know, it's quite a lot, looks like we'll be fine for finances."
I stepped toward her, my voice steady in a way that still surprised me.
"Colette... how do we keep all of this safe from theft? Like are there security measures in place?"
Charlie whipped around so fast her braid slapped her shoulder.
"Finally," she muttered, sounding more and more relieved that I was thinking practically instead of panicking.
Colette brightened, slipping instantly into her formal cadence, the one that made her sound like she was reciting ancient law.
"Lady Zora," she said, bowing her head slightly, "the Nightbearer Vault is protected by multiple layers of security. Theft is impossible."
"Oh... nice that's good." I said relieved.
"The vault is sealed by seven arcane wards," Colette said. "Each one keyed to your, and lady Charlie's bloodline. No outsider may pass them without triggering a full lockdown."
Charlie blinked.
"Seven? That's... excessive."
"Better than having this stolen." I said.
"Twelve guardian constructs remain dormant throughout the vault," Colette continued. "They awaken only when unauthorized presence is detected."
"Constructs? Like... big ones?" Charlie's eyes grew wide as she started looking around for them.
"Very," Colette said.
I glanced toward the shadows between the pillars. Something glinted there large, metal, and unmoving.
"The vault also does not exist in fixed space," Colette said. "It is anchored to a pocket dimension accessible only through the Nightbearer sigil."
Charlie stared.
"So it's basically hidden from reality."
"Correct," Colette said.
I nodded. "That is convenient."
"Every item is magically tagged," she went on. "If removed without authorization, it returns to its original position instantly."
My eyes widened.
"So even if someone grabbed a handful—"
"It would vanish from their grasp," Colette finished.
I breathed out slowly.
"If a breach is attempted," she said, her voice softening, "the vault collapses into stasis. Time stops inside until you personally release it."
Charlie stared at me like she expected me to finally freak out.
"Zora... this place is basically unstealable."
I shrugged satisfied."Good."
And it was. It felt good. Safe. Controlled.
Colette lowered her hands, her runes dimming.
"Lady Zora, Lady Charlie" she said, "the vault recognizes you two as its rightful keepers. Only those you grant access may interact with its contents."
I nodded again, the calm settling deeper, warm and steady.
"Perfect," I said. "That's exactly what we need."
Charlie finally exhaled, tension leaving her shoulders.
Colette's runes glowed softly as she finished explaining the security, her voice calm and precise.
I was about to ask her something else when a tiny noise echoed behind us.
A squeak.
A gasp.
Something between a hiccup and a suppressed scream.
Charlie spun around.
The elder's eyes narrowed.
Colette's head snapped toward the sound, her runes flaring bright red.
I turned slowly, steady, and already knew who was there before I saw them.
They were all there.
Riley stood frozen in the doorway, hands clamped over her mouth, eyes huge with excitement and terror. Reia hovered behind her, trying and failing to look innocent. Lucas was pressed against the wall like he thought he could blend into it. Nate looked guilty before anyone even said anything. Halden's tail was puffed up like a feather duster. Alexa stood behind them all, arms crossed, glaring at Nate like she was already blaming him.
Charlie groaned.
"Oh my gods... seriously guys.."
Everyone pointed at Nate.
Nate threw his hands up.
"Okay—okay, listen, I didn't make them come in, I just said it would be cool if we did!"
Alexa smacked the back of his head.
"You said, and I quote, 'Zora won't notice, she's busy not fainting.'"
Riley squeaked again, louder this time.
Colette's eyes glowed brighter, her posture shifting into something sharp and formal.
"Lady Zora," she said, her voice echoing through the chamber, "are these individuals authorized to enter the vault?"
She gave Nate a withering look.
“Especially that louse. I don't much like his demeanor."
Nate whimpered.
Lucas looked like he wanted to evaporate.
Riley mouthed "we're dead."
Halden's tail puffed even more.
Charlie muttered, "This is why we can't have nice things."
I looked at them giving Nate a look.
The calm didn't crack.
Didn't even ripple.
I looked at Colette, then at my friends—my ridiculous, nosy, loud, curious friends who absolutely should not have been in a thousand‑year‑old magical treasury.
But they were here.
And they were mine.
"They're with me," I said.
Colette blinked, her glowing eyes softening.
"Does that mean," she asked carefully, "that they are authorized?"
I breathed.
"Yes," I said. And then pointed at Nate. " Except for that one, he's not."
Colette nodded once.
"Understood."
Riley stepped forward. The barrier shimmered—then let her pass.
Reia followed. No resistance.
Lucas slipped through, shoulders tense but unharmed.
Halden padded in, tail slowly deflating.
Alexa walked through with a sharp glare at Nate.
Then Nate stepped forward.
The moment his foot crossed the threshold, the barrier snapped into existence with a crack of magic. It slammed into him like a wall of lightning and launched him backward. He hit the floor flat on his back with a grunt.
Everyone froze.
Riley sniggered.
Reia slapped a hand over her mouth.
Lucas winced.
Halden's tail puffed to full size again.
Alexa laughed outright.
Charlie muttered, "Oh, that's beautiful."
Nate lay there staring at the ceiling.
"...Ow."
Colette turned toward him, eyes glowing bright red.
"Lady Zora," she said, "has said that the individual designated Nate is not authorized."
Everyone looked at Nate.
Riley's laughed again. "Don't worry dummy. Accept your punishment with dignity."
Alexa snapped, "You deserve that."
Reia whispered, "That was so loud."
Lucas muttered, "I felt that in my spine."
Halden sniggered, "Try again. I want to see you bounce again!”
Nate sat up, rubbing his chest.
"Zora? Bestie? Buddy? Pal? Can I come in now?"
I shook my head.
"Not until further notice."
Charlie burst out laughing.
Colette bowed her head.
"Understood, Lady Zora. Authorization denied."
The barrier shimmered back into place, glowing faintly like it was waiting for Nate to try again.
And I stood there, smirking, watching Nate sulk on the floor while everyone else walked deeper into the vault.
"Stupid vault stupid barrier, I wanna see the treasure to." he moaned.
