Rebirth: I have Monopoly System

Chapter 224: Wang Tianqi Detained

The middle-aged policeman focused his gaze on a pinned post in the police forum titled, "Modu Scion’s Drunk Driving Hit-and-Run Kills Two!"

The middle-aged policeman took the phone and opened the post. The video’s perspective was like that of a head-mounted camera.

The middle-aged policeman didn’t dwell on how this video could exist.

In just a few minutes, he watched Wu Yun’s edited video. It showed the entire sequence: Wang Tianqi getting out of his car at the bar, drinking, getting back in, and finally, the accident and his escape back home. The car was the same red Ferrari 458 that had just been parked at the station.

The scene where Wang Tianqi’s car struck the two pedestrians, sending them flipping through the air before they crashed to the ground, made the middle-aged policeman’s face darken.

Seeing a link to download the full video attached, the middle-aged policeman ordered, "Go download the complete video. Take it to the tech department and have them check for any signs of editing!"

Once his team member left the room, the middle-aged policeman no longer suppressed his rage. He slammed his hand on the table and roared, "Xiao Yuanshan! Your attempt to take the fall for Wang Tianqi has been exposed!"

"Start talking! Why did you take the blame? Don’t you know this is a crime? Harboring a criminal! If Wang Tianqi goes down, you’re going down with him!"

"Confess now, and you might get a lighter sentence!"

Xiaoxiao trembled at the middle-aged policeman’s roar, his cuffed hands clenching into tight fists.

He knew things were bad the moment he saw the policeman watching the video on his phone, but he hadn’t expected the officer to explode with rage right after.

After all, he was just an ordinary person. Rattled by the officer’s mix of threats and bluffs, Xiaoxiao’s face crumpled as he confessed what had happened earlier that morning. "It started when I was asleep in bed. I got a call from Li Juan, telling me to come to the living room of the main villa..."

As Xiaoxiao recounted the story of the callous, wealthy family, it wasn’t just the middle-aged policeman whose face turned grim. Even the officer taking notes was grinding his teeth, wishing he could go arrest them on the spot.

Just as the statement was being finished, the officer who had brought in the phone pushed the door open. "Captain, the video is clean!"

"Issue the detention warrant!"

The middle-aged policeman stood up, his expression severe. "With me! We need to bring Wang Tianqi in, now! He might be planning to run!"

A police sedan and a van, sirens wailing, disappeared into the night, the piercing sound carrying far into the distance.

...

"Jeez, Mom! We have Xiao Yuanshan taking the fall for this, so why do I have to go abroad? I just started college! My best years haven’t even begun!"

"Don’t you want me to bring you back a daughter-in-law?" Wang Tianqi complained, reluctantly packing his things.

But Li Juan, a stark contrast to her usual self, snapped with a dark expression, "Get the hell out of the country! Don’t even think about coming home until this is all settled!"

Seeing his mom wasn’t joking, Wang Tianqi quickly stuffed his clothes and a few credit cards into his suitcase.

"Done!" Wang Tianqi said, glancing cautiously at his mother.

He was her son, after all. Li Juan’s heart softened. Looking at him, about to flee the country, her eyes welled up and tears streamed down her face. "Tianqi, it’s Mom’s fault. I always spoiled you, and that’s why this happened!"

"I booked you a flight to Jeju Island. It leaves first thing in the morning. Once you’re there, wait for your visa to the United States to be approved, then fly straight to America. Your father and I will meet you there."

It was the first time Wang Tianqi had ever seen his mother like this, and tears welled in his own eyes as he looked at Li Juan. "Mom, I’m sorry. I promise I’ll turn over a new leaf once I’m abroad."

Li Juan wiped away her tears, her gaze firming. "Enough talk. Get in the car. Now."

The headlights of the red Cayenne flared to life, and the car sped out of the gated community.

Moments after the Cayenne departed, two police cars pulled up in front of Wang Tianqi’s villa.

"Open up! KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!"

"Open up! KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!"

After two minutes of knocking, the door opened to reveal a middle-aged woman in her pajamas.

She jumped in surprise when she saw the group of police officers.

"Officers, who are you looking for?" the middle-aged woman asked cautiously.

"Is Wang Tianqi here?" a young officer holding a detention warrant asked.

The woman looked confused. "Officer, Ms. Li and the others just left a little while ago. I don’t know where they were going."

The young officer demanded, "What were they going to do?"

The woman answered timidly, "I don’t know, but I saw Ms. Li was pulling a suitcase."

Having gotten the clue he needed, the middle-aged policeman ordered, "Liu! Notify the tech department immediately. Check for any ticket purchase records."

"Let’s go! Back to the cars!"

The group of officers swarmed back into their vehicles.

As soon as they were in the car, the officer who had been watching the video feed shouted, "Captain! It’s bad! The story’s broken! This video is all over the internet now!"

The middle-aged policeman’s expression changed. He instantly realized someone was targeting Wang Tianqi. ’This is clearly surveillance footage.’

Shaking it off, he grabbed his radio. "Everyone! We have to bring Wang Tianqi in tonight! If we don’t, by dawn, it’ll be our darkest hour!"

With that said, the middle-aged policeman sat down in the passenger seat, leaned his head against the headrest, and closed his eyes to rest.

Less than five minutes later, Liu exclaimed from the back seat, "Captain, I found it! Wang Tianqi has a ticket for an eight o’clock flight to Jeju Island from Hongqiao Airport! First class!"

"Notify our colleagues at the airport! Intercept Wang Tianqi!"

"Move out!"

...

Listening to the music in Li Juan’s car—older songs, but still—Wang Tianqi, having calmed down, was in a reasonably good mood. He closed his eyes and started humming along.

Li Juan watched her son with a sense of helplessness. She knew that a personality developed over so many years couldn’t be changed overnight. She could only hope that once he was abroad, he would learn to be more discreet, a little smarter.

Li Juan’s mind wandered as she drove.

As they neared the airport, the traffic was already surprisingly heavy, even though it was only four or five in the morning.

Half an hour later, Li Juan parked in the airport garage.

"Hurry up!"

Li Juan walked ahead, pulling a black suitcase and constantly urging Wang Tianqi to keep up.

Wang Tianqi, having been up nearly all night, had only just managed a short nap in the car. Now, the sleepiness was hitting him hard.

Wang Tianqi reluctantly shouldered his backpack and dragged his exhausted body along behind Li Juan.

At the terminal entrance, Li Juan noticed several armed SWAT officers on duty. One of them seemed to be playing on his phone, occasionally glancing up at the passengers coming in.

Li Juan gave them only a passing glance, thinking nothing of it. She turned back to hurry Wang Tianqi.

The SWAT officer holding the phone saw them and gave a subtle signal to his colleagues.

The five officers spread out, forming a semi-encirclement as they closed in.

The entrance was so crowded that their coordinated movement would have been unnoticeable to anyone not watching from above.

Just as Li Juan passed through the gate, a wave of relief washing over her, she turned back to see two armed SWAT officers tackling Wang Tianqi to the ground.

The lead SWAT officer, smelling the heavy stench of alcohol on Wang Tianqi, yelled, "Wang Tianqi! You are a suspect in a fatal drunk driving hit-and-run! You are hereby placed under arrest! You’re coming with us!"
