"President Wu, let me introduce you. This is our boss!" Peng Zhijian said, pulling Wu Yun over.
Wu Yun smiled and shook hands with President Ma, saying with heartfelt admiration, "President Ma, your reputation precedes you. I practically grew up playing Tencent’s games."
Xiaomage joked, "In that case, you must have contributed a lot to my coffers. Should I be calling you ’daddy’?"
Wu Yun quickly waved his hands and explained, "Not at all! I was just a freeloader before. President Ma, you definitely didn’t make any money off of me!"
After a few more pleasantries, Xiaomage got straight to the point. "That Pinduoduo of yours has a lot of potential! Can you let us get in on it early?"
Peng Zhijian then chimed in, explaining Tencent’s strategy regarding WeChat Pay and their bullish outlook on e-commerce, noting that their investment in Jingdong was a part of that strategy.
Wu Yun had seen in the report earlier that WeBank was being established, and an idea had immediately sparked in his mind.
"President Ma, as you know, I’m not short on cash. I’ve already told President Peng that I’ve prepared five hundred million to inject into Pinduoduo."
Xiaomage smiled and nodded, finding it a bit incredible that Wu Yun had so much money. ’Whose family does this kid belong to? He’s even more ostentatious than Xiaowang from the Wangs’.’
This was also one of the reasons Xiaomage and Peng Zhijian had been so keen on investing in Wuyun Company.
"I know you’re not short on cash, but you are short on resources. Just think! If you accept our investment, the resources of WeChat, and even the entire Tencent Ecosystem, can be funneled your way. It would save you a ton of time and money!"
Wu Yun didn’t give a straight answer, instead changing the subject. "President Ma, I hear Tencent is preparing to launch WeBank! I wonder if there’s an opportunity for me to get in on that? If there is, I could divert the funds meant for Pinduoduo to WeBank."
Xiaomage and Peng Zhijian exchanged a look, now even more certain of Wu Yun’s extraordinary background.
The preparations for WeBank had been kept semi-secretive. Anyone without insider connections would have no idea such a project even existed.
Xiaomage considered this for a moment, then said, "WeBank is an experiment, our response to a government initiative. I can’t guarantee it will be profitable. Could you tell me why you want to invest in WeBank?"
Seeing that the two were settling in for a serious discussion, Peng Zhijian pulled out chairs so they could sit down and talk comfortably.
"An internet bank, unlike a traditional bank, doesn’t have physical branches. Its branches have essentially moved online."
"I think Tencent has a major advantage in the internet banking space. You can leverage Tencent’s vast social media resources to structure your business operations."
Wu Yun’s words made both men’s eyes light up.
Wu Yun continued:
"I think you can fully leverage Tencent’s social media advantage. First, launch a ’Micro-Loan’ feature on QQ to test the waters and screen for high-quality customers. If demand is strong, we can then roll out the business more boldly."
"Next, use WeChat to further tap into potential customers via an invitation-only model for premium clients. If demand outstrips our capital, we can partner with other licensed financial institutions for joint lending and earn a service fee based on a percentage. This way, we can remain profitable while also mitigating our own risk."
Wu Yun had just casually laid out the winding path of development that WeBank would only discover through trial and error in the years to come.
The way Xiaomage looked at Wu Yun was different now; it was the look of a legendary horse judge who had just found a priceless steed. "High-quality customers? How would you define and categorize them?"
Wu Yun took a sip of tea and said, "It’s about using internal big data to screen out people who have complaints or a history of deceptive behavior. We select people with high credit scores, proactively invite them, and offer them loans."
"If they accept the invitation, they’ll naturally proceed to the next step of verification, which is a formal credit check. This approach should prevent a lot of bad debts and defaults."
Xiaomage was in full agreement with Wu Yun’s proposal. His opposition to Wu Yun joining the venture was beginning to soften.
Xiaomage had largely delegated the preparations for WeBank to his subordinates. Tencent was a massive company, and he had numerous other branches and subsidiaries to manage. At this point, you could say Xiaomage was only overseeing the grand strategy.
But this was the first time he had heard a plan as clear-headed and well-structured as the one Wu Yun just laid out.
"If we let you in, how much capital can you provide?" Xiaomage asked suddenly.
Wu Yun was taken aback for a moment, then began to mentally calculate his funds.
’I have 360 million in my account right now. If I sell a few more of my shares in Little Red Car, I should be able to get to five hundred million. If I transfer all of it, I can upgrade immediately.’
’According to the system’s rules, the base amount after an upgrade is five times the previous level. That means I’d get 405 million Huaxia Coin a month.’
However, just to be sure, Wu Yun asked the system for confirmation.
Unexpectedly, he received a different reply from the system: "Because the Host has completely left the novice period, the system’s model will be adjusted after Level Seven to prevent issues with withdrawing excessively large amounts or causing unnecessary trouble later on. However, Host can rest assured, the base amount will not change."
Seeing Wu Yun lost in thought, Xiaomage and President Peng didn’t disturb him.
Then, they heard Wu Yun speak, "President Ma, I was wondering, how much is Tencent planning to invest?"
’Of course, I already know how much Tencent is investing,’ Wu Yun thought. ’But if I just came out and said it, President Ma would probably go home and start a witch hunt for the mole in his company!’
Xiaomage smiled and said, "Since we’re just testing the waters, we aren’t investing that much. We plan to put in 900 million initially, and we’re looking to raise 3 to 4 billion in capital."
Wu Yun nodded. "Alright! Then I’ll also invest 900 million! But the funds will arrive in two or three installments."
Even with that condition, Xiaomage and Peng Zhijian were utterly stunned. ’He’s only eighteen!’
’When we were eighteen, we were probably still just basking in the excitement of starting college!’
However, Xiaomage had no intention of probing into the source of Wu Yun’s funds. ’Maybe he’s just an agent for someone else. That’s always a possibility.’
’But judging by his demeanor and actions, that seems unlikely. After all, I arranged this banquet on the spur of the moment. What kind of person could have possibly predicted this?’
’Besides, it’s not his money I care about; it’s his insight.’
’A plan like this is all upside and no downside for WeBank. Whether the ideas are his or from a team behind him, their contribution will help WeBank avoid a lot of missteps.’
Xiaomage stood up and extended his hand. "Alright! Here’s to a successful partnership!"
The three of them chatted for a while longer about Pinduoduo and Little Red Car, after which Xiaomage left the private room, saying he had other matters to attend to.
Peng Zhijian looked at Wu Yun and said with a sigh, "President Wu, I take back what I said about you being an old-money tycoon. I just have to ask, does your family own a mine or something?"
