Rebirth: I have Monopoly System

Chapter 265 - 261: Pinduoduo’s Successful Series A Financing

"Bai Yue! Guess what I saw on the forums?" Yang Lili said excitedly, leaning close to Bai Yue’s ear.

Bai Yue just glanced at her gloating expression and ignored her.

But Yang Lili pressed on relentlessly. "I saw intimate photos of your boyfriend with someone else on the forums. They were saying he’s dating her!"

Bai Yue was suddenly alarmed and worried. Feigning composure, she asked, "Where did you see that?"

Yang Lili waved her phone. "Because of today’s news, your Wu Yun is totally famous online now. Some people from his university commented that he’s a big deal on their forums too, calling him ’the talented tycoon’! So I went to check it out and ended up seeing that post."

As she spoke, Yang Lili opened the Sichuan Normal University forum. "Huh? Where did the post go?"

Lei Lei, who was standing by, sneered, "Yang Lili, are you just jealous that Yueyue’s boyfriend is so amazing that you want to cause trouble between them?"

Of course, Yang Lili wouldn’t admit that for a split second, she’d had that exact thought. "I swear I saw the post! How can it be gone now?"

Yang Lili was completely baffled.

...

「December 3rd, 9:30 AM.」

Another motorcade pulled up to the entrance of Citibank Mansion.

Peng Zhijian stepped out of the car and looked up at the modest office building. He felt a surge of emotion, surprised to be back here again so soon.

"President Peng! Welcome!" Just like last time, Wu Yun was waiting downstairs with a group of people to greet him.

Peng Zhijian roared with laughter and teased, "Well, well! To what do I owe the honor of being welcomed by the ’tall, rich, and handsome’ man himself!"

Wu Yun’s expression remained unchanged. "Ah, it’s all just hype. I’m still a long way from the real top players."

Though Wu Yun’s words were modest, Peng Zhijian could still sense his immense ambition. ’He’s not just aiming for the top ranks; he’s aiming for the very top.’

Peng Zhijian chuckled. "President Wu, you’ve certainly been in the limelight lately! I’m sure that once the news of Pinduoduo’s financing gets out today, it will cause a massive stir online. Your net worth will skyrocket, and you’ll become the youngest self-made tycoon, no doubt about it!"

Wu Yun was no longer the inexperienced, recently reborn teacher he once was. Having knocked around the business world for the past six months, he’d grown accustomed to flattery and praise. He reacted smoothly, "President Peng, you jest. Why don’t we head up to the office and we can all talk things over?"

A few moments later, Wu Yun and Peng Zhijian were the first to arrive, taking their seats in Pinduoduo’s conference room.

The once-empty conference table was now neatly set with teacups and bottles of mineral water. Notepads and pens were also placed precisely in front of each seat.

The two didn’t immediately dive into the topic of financing. Instead, they began by discussing some of the recent buzz online.

Only when almost everyone had arrived did Peng Zhijian get up and move to a chair directly across from Wu Yun.

Given the gravity of the meeting, Zhou Shen stood at the lectern and launched the PowerPoint presentation he had prepared.

"Pinduoduo officially went live on November 1st, 2014. After... and as of 6 PM yesterday, Pinduoduo has a total of 21.5 million registered users."

"In that same period, the total transaction volume on the Pinduoduo platform reached 2.6 billion..."

Peng Zhijian showed no signs of surprise or shock. He was already familiar with Pinduoduo’s numbers from their prior due diligence. A little more growth in the past few days was to be expected.

’In fact,’ he thought, ’if today’s numbers weren’t higher than the ones from our investigation, we would have to seriously reconsider this whole deal.’

The presentation wasn’t long. Zhou Shen took ten minutes to cover Pinduoduo’s past, present, and future.

"That concludes the company overview. Do the investor representatives have any questions? We’ll be happy to answer them."

Seeing that the group of investors, led by Peng Zhijian, had no immediate questions, Zhou Shen returned to his seat beside Wu Yun.

"President Wu," Peng Zhijian began, "we already have a solid foundation for cooperation. Furthermore, our group is very optimistic about Pinduoduo’s potential. Tencent is keen to enter the e-commerce space and, at the same time, promote WeChat Pay."

"After a careful evaluation, we’ve valued Pinduoduo at 300 million USD. We, Tencent, are seeking a 25% stake. There is one more condition: the pre-money option pool must be no less than 10%."

Of course, Wu Yun wasn’t going to accept that valuation. He, along with Zhou Shen and the others, began to vigorously counter Tencent’s representatives.

However, the heated debate, which left management from both sides red in the face, was mostly for show. The two men who held the real decision-making power remained perfectly calm, as if watching a play unfold.

Only when the discussion hit a critical point would either of them interject with a sentence or two to state their position.

"A 400 million USD valuation. The most we can give you is a 20% stake. We already have a 10% option pool set up, and we can write that into the agreement."

"Done."

The team from Tencent’s investment and M&A department, all finance professionals, quickly calculated the post-financing equity split and projected it onto the main screen.

The calculation showed a pre-money valuation for Pinduoduo of 400 million USD. With a capital injection of 100 million USD, Tencent would receive a 20% post-money stake.

Wu Yun’s original 90% stake was diluted to 72%, and the 10% option pool was diluted to 8%.

Zhou Shen was grinning from ear to ear. Half of that option pool would be his in the future. Although his personal stake was diluted from 5% to 4%, this new 4% was worth far more than his previous 5%.

"A pleasure doing business with you."

"A pleasure doing business with you."

CLICK. CLICK. CLICK. The sound of camera shutters filled the air.

The image of Wu Yun and Peng Zhijian shaking hands, each holding a folder, was immortalized in photographs.

With the main agreement settled, the ensuing paperwork was a task for their subordinates, not for Wu Yun or Peng Zhijian.

And so, the two men walked shoulder-to-shoulder toward Wu Yun’s office, talking and laughing, leaving a room full of busy figures behind them.

When Peng Zhijian entered Wu Yun’s office, he found the layout completely different from his last visit.

’How should I put this?’ he thought. ’If it weren’t for the fact that there was only one computer, I’d feel like I’d just walked into an internet cafe.’

"President Wu, you play games?" The moment the words left his mouth, Peng Zhijian wanted to slap himself. He’d been dealing with Wu Yun for so long that he’d completely forgotten his actual age.

Remembering Wu Yun’s age, Peng Zhijian felt a daze come over him. ’What kind of freak of nature is he? What kind of family could raise a child like this!’

He had seen the photo on Wu Yun’s ID. He was about to turn nineteen. To have achieved so much at that age... placed him in a league of his own, not just in the country, but in the entire world. It was unprecedented.

"I’ve been playing a PC game my own game company is developing," Wu Yun explained with a laugh. "It’s in closed beta right now, so I play a few rounds during work hours!" ’Now, should I let Tencent in on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds?’ he mused. ’It’s a surefire money-maker, but bringing someone else in means a smaller slice of the pie for me.’

’Then again, more people helping to bake the cake could make for a much bigger cake in the end. How should I play this?’
