Wu Yun opened the mini-map and was taken aback. ’Has Qiangzai completely lost his mind!? Why would he pick a place like this?’
The infamous Jiuyan Bridge incident hadn’t completely faded from memory yet. Jiuyan Bridge was now a famous attraction in Rongcheng, where scores of guys would wander around every night, hoping to reenact a "Jiuyan Bridge Incident 2.0."
Jiuyan Bridge was also where Rongcheng’s bars were most concentrated. Dance clubs and quiet pubs were everywhere, making it a prime spot for parties, romantic encounters, or just grabbing a drink with friends.
Wu Yun pushed aside his wild thoughts. ’I’m not going to run into that kind of trouble,’ he thought. ’After all, a guy is stronger than a girl, right?’
Without even changing, Wu Yun went straight to the nightstand and pulled open the drawer. Seeing the four car keys arranged inside, he had a hard time choosing.
In the end, he pocketed the key to the Big Black Bull.
Down in the basement, the Big Black Bull’s lights flickered on. The engine, silent for a long time, erupted with a low, muffled roar that reverberated through the garage.
Even parked in the basement, after sitting unused for so long, the Big Black Bull was covered in a layer of dust.
So Wu Yun first went to Xiaohuzi Boss Mao’s car wash. With Boss Mao providing eager service, a few of his boys quickly washed the Big Black Bull until it was spotless.
"Young Master Wu! Drive safe!" Boss Mao said, bowing and scraping.
After Wu Yun’s car had driven off into the distance, he saw his two employees still staring dazedly at the Lamborghini’s taillights and couldn’t help but chide them with a laugh. "What are you gawking at! Get back to washing cars! If you work hard, someday you’ll all be able to afford a Lamborghini... model!"
Relying on his superb driving skills and the Big Black Bull’s superior performance, Wu Yun weaved through the less-than-peak-hour traffic, earning curses from numerous Shu A drivers.
"Think you’re hot stuff ’cause you’re rich? Weaving all over the place! And you call that a turn signal?" This cursing driver, keeping an eye on everything, spotted a gap of about two car lengths in the adjacent lane and immediately wrenched his wheel to slide into it.
"DAMMIT! Can’t you drive?! Didn’t even signal! Are you in a rush to get reincarnated?!" cursed the driver behind him, who had been forced to slam on the brakes.
When Wu Yun arrived at the hot pot restaurant from the map location, he found a spot on the street and parked casually.
The scissor doors swung open, and the evening rush-hour crowd turned to stare with curiosity at the driver of the rarely-seen Lamborghini.
Wu Yun walked straight toward the hot pot restaurant, his gaze fixed forward.
"Hey handsome! Do you have a reservation?" a waitress with an earpiece asked enthusiastically.
Wu Yun simply gave Gao Qiang’s name.
"Yanyan! Take the guest to table five!" the hostess called to her colleague behind her.
Led by the waitress, Wu Yun easily found Gao Qiang sitting in the middle of the main dining hall.
Shouts of "Server!" echoed constantly through the noisy dining hall.
Gao Qiang seemed oblivious to his surroundings, his head still lowered as he stared blankly at his phone.
Wu Yun walked over and clapped him on the shoulder. "What’s on your mind? You look completely zoned out!"
Gao Qiang looked up, revealing dark circles under his eyes and a stubbly, unshaven face. He forced a smile. "Ah Yun! You’re here! Go ahead and order!"
Instead of answering right away, Wu Yun took the menu from the server, ticked off several meat dishes they both liked, and handed it back.
"Seriously, are you for real?" Wu Yun said, a little disappointed in him. "It’s just one woman. It’s only been a month or two, and you’re this broken up about it?"
Gao Qiang’s brow furrowed. "Ah Yun, I’m not like you! This was my first love! I thought it would last a long time! I thought we would get married and have kids! Sigh... It was all fake! I was just being naive!"
As someone with more experience in these matters, Wu Yun instantly understood. Gao Qiang couldn’t take the shock of a breakup, and given how sudden it was, Zhang Xiaojing must have been the one to initiate it.
And what’s more, Wu Yun guessed the reason for the breakup was probably bizarre!
Wu Yun took a sip of his buckwheat tea before asking unhurriedly, "So, tell me. Why did you call me that day when I was in the Capital City?"
Hearing Wu Yun’s question, Gao Qiang gave a self-mocking smile. "I was going to ask you for advice on what to do when meeting the parents. We had planned for me to visit her family after final exams were over."
"I figured you’d have more experience, you know? After all, you’ve met three different fathers-in-law!"
Gao Qiang’s voice had unconsciously gotten louder, causing a girl at the table behind him to turn around and stare at Wu Yun in astonishment. She then quickly turned back and began whispering to her friend.
Wu Yun was speechless. "What do you mean, I’m ’more experienced’?!"
"Sigh, it doesn’t matter anymore," Gao Qiang said with a sense of helplessness. "I don’t need the advice now anyway!"
Just then, the beef tallow soup base was brought to their table.
CLICK. CLICK. The portable gas burner sparked to life, a blue flame licking the bottom of the steel hot pot.
"So, tell me what happened," Wu Yun prompted.
Gao Qiang didn’t hesitate. "Things were going really well between us," he began. "We had a lot in common, and that’s why we brought up meeting each other’s parents."
"But then, out of nowhere, Zhang Xiaojing told me her grandmother had found out about us. Her grandma went to a fortune-teller to have our birth charts read for compatibility."
"The result was predictable. When they were told our charts weren’t compatible, her grandmother—and her grandfather—became dead set against us being together."
"On top of that, Zhang Xiaojing always listens to her family. So, according to her, she agonized over it for days before finally deciding to break up with me, saying it was better to do it now since we hadn’t been together for too long."
The more he spoke, the angrier Gao Qiang became. He was furious with her family, especially her grandparents. Why did they have to be so rigid and superstitious!
Wu Yun chuckled. "I’d bet that’s just an excuse to break you two up."
"What makes you say that?" Gao Qiang asked, calming down slightly.
"You know Qi Fei, right? When she found out you were dating Zhang Xiaojing, Qi Fei told me some things about Zhang Xiaojing’s family."
"She didn’t say much, but reading between the lines of what Qi Fei said, it’s clear her family is the type to treat people differently based on their status. They’re social climbers. They’re probably looking to marry their daughter into a family of equal or, preferably, higher financial standing."
Wu Yun was about to say more, but Gao Qiang cut him off. "But I don’t believe Zhang Xiaojing is like that! Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been with me for this long!"
Wu Yun nodded. "That’s fair. Oh, right! There’s something else I need to tell you."
Before Gao Qiang could respond, Wu Yun continued, "Last month, I went with a few friends to check out a blind date for another friend of ours."
Gao Qiang wasn’t dumb. He immediately caught Wu Yun’s meaning, but asked in an uncertain voice anyway, "Don’t tell me your friend’s date was... Zhang Xiaojing?"
"That’s right! It was Zhang Xiaojing," Wu Yun confirmed with a nod. "But from what I saw, it didn’t look like anything came of it."
"Ah Yun! Why didn’t you tell me!" Gao Qiang said, his expression sullen.
Wu Yun picked up a piece of beef tripe from the plate and dropped it into the boiling pot before answering, "You and Zhang Xiaojing were in the middle of your honeymoon phase back then! I didn’t want to ruin things for you two, so I decided to keep it to myself for the time being."
Seeing Gao Qiang’s agitation, Wu Yun continued, "For people from that older, wealthy generation, many of them have their beliefs, you know? Or they’re very traditional."
"So, the idea of marrying into a family of similar social standing is very important, and perfectly normal, to them."
Wu Yun advised, "Qiangzai, I’m not trying to give you a hard time, but there’s a whole forest out there. Why get hung up on one crooked tree?"
Hearing this, Gao Qiang grew even more dejected and shouted, "Ah Yun, that’s easy for you to say! You’re sitting on the entire forest of Sichuan Normal University, so of course you don’t care about losing one or two little trees."
"Do you have any idea what my school is like? It’s a monastery! Any girl who’s even remotely attractive has a boyfriend who follows her around like a dog, practically wanting to piss on her to mark his territory and say, ’This fucking tree is mine!’"
Wu Yun laughed. "Hey, you can’t look at it like that! As long as you become strong enough yourself, you’ll have your pick of high-quality women in the future!"
"Then you’ll be like a flower, attracting bees and butterflies from all over!"
"Ah Yun, are you just describing yourself now?!"
