Yu Manli turned to the side, giving Cheng Jinyun a cold, sidelong glance. Not to be outdone, Cheng Jinyun shot a glare back and said, "You want to talk to me!?"
Yu Manli spoke in a rush, as if she couldn’t be bothered to talk to Cheng Jinyun. "What is there to talk about with you!"
The two then reached an understanding on the matter of having a talk.
"Excellent!" A wave of applause broke out all around.
"Fantastic! Another one-take wonder!" Li Xue boomed with laughter. To be fair, he deserved some credit for Qi Fei’s portrayal of Yu Manli.
Afterward, Qi Fei left the set to prepare for the next shot.
Just then, Liu Xin came over and took out Qi Fei’s phone. "Feifei! The big boss sent you several messages!"
Hearing that the messages were from Wu Yun, a genuine smile spread across Qi Fei’s face. The Yu Manli from moments ago, the one with so much blood on her hands, vanished without a trace.
Qi Fei quickly skimmed Wu Yun’s messages. She didn’t watch the video because there wasn’t time, so she hastily replied, "Wait till I’m done filming! I’m definitely going to check out some pink four-piece bedding sets tonight!"
"Okay! Can’t talk now! Let’s video chat tonight!"
After replying, Qi Fei handed the phone back to Liu Xin, then picked up the script beside her and began studying it once more.
After an unknown amount of time, someone shouted, "Actors for Episode X, Scene XX, please get ready!"
...
「February 14, 2015. The twenty-sixth day of the twelfth lunar month.」
After spending a few days in Capital City and celebrating an early Valentine’s Day with Bai Yue, Wu Yun took a chartered plane straight to Modu.
At ten-thirty in the morning, Wu Yun and his entourage arrived in Modu. They got into cars that had been prepared for them and headed straight for the set of Disguiser.
Today was the crew’s last day of filming before the New Year. They would be taking a seven-day break and resuming shooting on the fourth day of the first lunar month.
This set visit was a last-minute idea of Wu Yun’s, so he hadn’t notified the crew in advance.
So when Da Xiong and the others arrived at the perimeter of the set first, many people thought Da Xiong and Caviar were specialty actors hired by some production—they were just so huge!
It wasn’t until Wu Yun’s large entourage crowded in after them that a field manager saw Wu Yun and realized what was going on.
He hurried forward to greet him. "President Wu! Welcome, welcome! Director Li and the others are in the middle of filming. Should I go get them?"
Wu Yun stopped him with a smile. "No need! We’ll just look around for now. We can talk when you all take a break!"
"Oh, right! These are gifts for the crew!"
Wu Yun pointed to the two large insulated containers and a large cardboard box being carried by people in his group. "Be careful, these are full of milk tea! The cardboard box is full of flowers!"
The field manager quickly called over a couple of onlookers to help move the two containers to the rest area.
At that moment, a scene featuring several of the main actors was being filmed, and Wu Yun’s group quietly gathered around to watch.
As it happened, Qi Fei, playing Yu Manli, was pointing a pistol at the camera with one hand when she caught a glimpse of Wu Yun’s face out of the corner of her eye.
After so much study and practice, Qi Fei was rarely affected by external distractions anymore, and she smoothly delivered her lines and finished her actions without a hitch.
After a couple of retakes because the main actors weren’t perfectly in sync, Li Xue finally picked up his megaphone and announced, "Alright! Break time! We’ll continue this afternoon!"
As soon as Li Xue finished speaking, the field manager who had greeted Wu Yun earlier whispered a few words in his ear.
Qi Fei approached Wu Yun with a cheerful spring in her step. She glanced at the four foreign bodyguards beside him, then smiled and said, "What are you doing here, junior!"
Wu Yun maintained a slight distance from Qi Fei and replied with a smile, "The boss is here to inspect the work and, while I’m at it, check on the progress of my investment!"
Seeing Wu Yun’s mock-formal act, Qi Fei couldn’t help but cover her mouth and chuckle. Although many people on set had already guessed at her relationship with Wu Yun, he himself was unaware of it.
Qi Fei could feel many eyes on them, so she played along with a smile. "Well then, President Wu! Did you bring anything nice for us on your visit?"
Wu Yun immediately turned and pointed toward the rest area. "Of course I did! How could I not? A cup of milk tea for everyone to warm their hands!"
Li Xue put down what he was doing and waited for Wu Yun and Qi Fei to finish talking before walking over with a smile. "President Wu, why didn’t you give us a heads-up that you were visiting? We would’ve arranged a welcoming ceremony!"
Wu Yun wasn’t some old stick-in-the-mud who cared about excessive formalities, so he just said, "Director Li! I brought some milk tea. Please help hand it out!"
"Oh, right! It’s Valentine’s Day, so I bought a rose for every actress and female crew member! Please help me pass those out as well!"
"You got it! No problem!"
After Li Xue walked away, Qi Fei asked with a beaming smile, "Is one of those roses in the box for me?"
Wu Yun fought the urge to put his arm around her shoulder and said with a straight face, "You’re also an actress, so of course there’s one for you."
Qi Fei pouted. "And that’s it? Nothing else?"
Wu Yun grinned mischievously. "How could there not be? Tonight, I’ll give you a few hundred million of my descendants!"
"Hmph! You’re never serious! I’m going to get my milk tea and rose!" With a smile on her face, Qi Fei turned and walked toward the crowd of crew members.
Wu Yun smiled and followed her.
One of the bolder women, Wang Ou for example, shouted to Wu Yun after getting her rose, "Thank you for the milk tea and the rose, President Wu!"
After saying that, Wang Ou even blew Wu Yun a kiss.
Wu Yun playfully blew one back at her, then blew another to a different female staff member, who blushed and hid behind the crowd.
"Hey, hey, hey! President Wu!" Li Xue joked as he walked over, having finished directing the distribution of the milk tea and roses. "If you keep this up, I’m going to have to ban you from visiting the set! Look how you’ve charmed all our ladies! How are we supposed to get any filming done? They’ll all just be daydreaming about you!"
It was approaching lunchtime, and under the staff’s direction, the crew began distributing boxed lunches.
Li Xue said with a smile, "President Wu! Since you’re here, allow me to treat you to our crew’s fine dining!"
Wu Yun wasn’t a pretentious person, so he followed Li Xue toward the distribution point.
"President Wu! Please wait here a moment! I’ll go get them!" Seeing the crew and actors lining up for their lunches, Li Xue went to the field manager’s station and asked, "Do we have any extra boxed lunches today?"
The field manager replied, "Director Li! We only ordered four extras!"
Director Li glanced at the bodyguards, secretary, and staff behind Wu Yun, then turned and decisively told his own people, "You lot, go eat out after the lunches are distributed! Come to me for reimbursement when you get back!"
"Alright, Director Li!" The men broke into smiles. To be honest, they were sick of these boxed lunches. Who wouldn’t be happy about getting to eat better on the company’s dime?
"You two, help me bring a few boxed lunches over!"
...
Wu Yun occasionally greeted actors who came over to say hello. Everyone was very tactful; they would simply come by to make an appearance, exchange a few words, and then take their boxed lunch to the rest area to eat.
Qi Fei walked up to Wu Yun, boxed lunch in hand, and said with a smile, "My, you’re a big shot, President Wu! I had to get in line just to say hello to you! Hmph, hmph!"
With that, Qi Fei lifted her chin, about to lead Liu Xin and Li Fengying toward the rest area.
Liu Xin said bashfully, "Thank you for the milk tea and the rose, President Wu!"
"Let’s go! What are you thanking him for? For a man so rich to only buy milk tea and a single rose, he’s way too cheap!"
Afterward, Wu Yun and his group all received their boxed lunches.
Wu Yun tasted the lunch, which was a significant improvement over school cafeteria food. He could tell the production wasn’t stingy with its food budget. Otherwise, how could a typical boxed lunch taste this good and come with such a large chunk of beef?
"Boss!~ This food~ is delicious!" The authentic Sichuan dialect coming from Da Xiong’s mouth sounded a bit strange to Wu Yun.
"Yeah, yeah! This beef~ is fragrant!" Caviar shoveled a large mouthful of rice mixed with the braised beef and its sauce into his mouth.
Hearing the Sichuan dialect come out of these two hulking men, Li Xue almost spat out the rice in his mouth.
Li Xue was only a third of the way through his meal when he heard a voice behind him speak in Russian-accented English, mixed with a Huaxia word, "Sir! Do you have any... box~lunch~?"
Li Xue turned his head and saw Da Xiong, who had been sitting on a stool behind him just moments ago, was already on his feet. The lunch box in his hands was scraped completely clean.
Spotting two grains of rice left, Da Xiong picked them up with his chopsticks and popped them into his mouth.
