"Okay, no problem. I’ll drive the car over tomorrow morning, but there’s no space to park it here, right?"
"Once everything’s packed up, have Chaoyang drive it away," Wei Kaiyun said.
"Chaoyang won’t have much time tomorrow. Xiao Jiang, I’m going to round up some strong lads tomorrow, you need to get the factory’s accounts done for me, so we can pay the workers and let them go on holiday."
"There’s still quite a lot of stock in the warehouse, Uncle Han."
Han Xiangjun waved his hand. "It’s fine, it won’t go bad. I’ll keep ten people here to watch over it, we’ll ship it out in March."
"But the clients outside are pushing hard. How about we don’t take the holiday yet? If it doesn’t work, I’ll come back and keep an eye on things," Chaoyang really had no way to deal with this playful Han Xiangjun.
"All right, you said it yourself. I’ll give you ten days off, and after ten days you come back and keep watching. If you’re willing to work straight through New Year’s Eve, I’ve got no objections."
The others just stood off to the side laughing. Chaoyang was still young; Han Xiangjun had dug this pit for him long ago, just waiting for him to jump in.
Chaoyang knew it too, but he was someone with a very strong sense of responsibility. He’d rather wear himself out, so this really was one willing to hit and one willing to be hit.
Feifei leaned against Shang Zhenkun. "Master Shang, does the acupuncture hurt?"
"No, it doesn’t. It’s quite comfortable, I actually fell asleep."
"Then you have to stick with it. We’ll come back as soon as we can."
"Okay, I’ll be at home waiting for you."
Han Xiangjun watched from the side, feeling greedy with envy. A girl really was different, so considerate.
But he had no plans to have a family again in this life, and even less to have a daughter, so he could only cling tightly to Feifei.
If she became his daughter-in-law, that would of course be the best, but the kids had grown up together, so it still depended on what they thought. Otherwise he was afraid of affecting their relationship.
When they were little you could joke about it, but once they’re grown, you can’t say this kind of thing anymore.
Over at the Lv Family, the four of them finished eating dumplings and were still sitting on the kang chatting.
"Right, I called my dad today.
My dad will definitely call my Brother Chaoyang, which means Teacher Jiang already knows. I figure they’ll start arranging their time over there too."
"Mm, good. I’ll start getting things ready too. Jing Chu, tomorrow morning you still go to the supply and marketing cooperative to find your Aunt She. We still have ten jin of meat coupons here. I’ll exchange a bit more today."
"Dad, didn’t Uncle Ding say he was preparing? Don’t go borrowing meat coupons, we’ll just buy however much our family can afford."
"That works too." Lv Beiguang didn’t like asking people for favors.
"Dad, did you ask about the job?"
Lv Beiguang looked at his daughter helplessly. "I talked to your Uncle Sun today, he said he’ll take care of it."
Jing Chu smiled and happily wrapped her arms around Dad’s arm.
"You..."
"Dad, wherever I go in this life I’m taking you with me, unless you start a family again. Then if you two are willing, you’ll still come along with me all the same."
"All right, I’ll follow my girl for the rest of my life. Wherever she goes, I’ll go."
Jing Chu nodded happily.
It was getting late. Lv Beiguang carried his own luggage and went to the side room.
Jing Chu watched with a smile as her brother carried his wife’s luggage over. She didn’t tease them; her sister-in-law’s face was red enough as it was.
The young couple was really excited. This was their first wedding night in the real sense.
Young people never seem to get tired, always full of energy.
The next morning, Li Xue didn’t get up. Lv Beiguang glared at his son, but as a father he couldn’t interfere with what went on in his son’s room.
Jing Chu went to light the stove and get some meat, then came back and started cleaning next door. She didn’t ask her brother and sister-in-law to help; she just wiped down the furniture and the windows.
At noon, Sun Baosheng and Lv Beiguang ate together. "So you’ve really decided?"
"Yeah, Jing Chu kept nagging at me anyway. It’s fine. Following the two of them around is pretty good too. Wherever they go in the future, I’ll go."
"Beiguang, you’ve really lived your whole life for other people. Can’t you live just once for yourself?"
After more than ten years together, they knew each other well. This honest man had lived his life with almost no sense of self.
"There’s nothing wrong with it. I’m not an ambitious person, I just take life as it comes. I don’t plan to marry again either, staying with the kids like this is pretty good."
"You... you’re still young, find someone else."
Lv Beiguang smiled and shook his head. "No, I’m used to living on my own. I don’t want the trouble."
Sun Baosheng knew he couldn’t persuade him. He’d been trying for years, but that’s just how he was.
"By the way, a county leader’s family wants this job. They’re offering eight hundred yuan. Think of it as compensation for you." After all, losing this job meant having no security in old age.
"Okay, when are we doing it?"
"Whenever you think is best."
Lv Beiguang thought that since things had already come to this, he might as well do it this month.
"There are only a few days left till the end of the month. Let’s wait till payday and handle it then."
"All right, I’ll push them for an extra two hundred. After all, they’re getting all the year‑end benefits too."
Lv Beiguang had no objections. This old friend was helping him. Otherwise a job like this would go for at most six hundred.
In the afternoon, Lv Beiguang started slowly packing his things and moving them back bit by bit.
The happiest of all was Jing Chu; she felt a long‑awaited sense of security at last.
Next door, Zhao Xiaoli’s home was already cleaned up and warmed through.
"Dad, tomorrow is the big market day. I want to go."
"Is there anything you need to buy?"
"I just want to walk around. The kang mats at Aunt Jiang’s place and Sister Xiaoli’s place both need changing.
Don’t worry, I’ll wrap myself up tight."
With a face like hers, she didn’t feel pleased at all; instead she just felt it was terribly inconvenient.
"I’ll wear a mask, a scarf, a headscarf, and my padded coat."
"All right, Guodong, the three of you go together. Whatever happens, the three of you stick together."
"Okay, we haven’t been to market in a long time either. We’ll go take a look and join in the bustle."
"I’ll leave the bicycle for you tomorrow."
"No need, we’ll just walk and push the handcart."
The next day after breakfast, once the stoves in all three homes were taken care of, they set out.
"Jing Chu, we actually don’t need to buy those. Sister Xiaoli’s family is going to sell the house, and I figure Aunt Jiang will sell hers too. So buying new kang mats is really a waste. How much longer do you think they’ll stay?"
"Okay, then we won’t buy them."
This was the county’s big market day; there were a lot of people, but there were also people in charge of security.
When Jing Chu saw them, she felt uncomfortable all over.
They just bought ten heads of cabbage and hurried back home.
These people had left a shadow in Jing Chu’s heart.
Over in the Capital, a group of two vehicles set out as well.
In the jeep, Wei Kaiyun was driving. Jiang Xinyu sat in front holding Shi Xian, and in the back sat Zhao Xiaoli, Ah Bao, Feifei, and Tingting.
The rest were all in the truck, with Chaoyang driving.
At their speed they could reach T City by the next morning.
So they planned not to stop, and to take turns driving.
