Rebirth: My CEO Husband's Thoughts Are Too Shameless

Chapter 64: Did something happened between these two?

[Twenty Minutes Later – Sterling Mansion]

"So?" Dominic asked, his gaze fixed on Clara as she flipped through the thick stack of papers before her.

Clara looked from the documents to Dominic before letting out a weak laugh.

"You literally compiled an encyclopedia on Gen. That’s... honestly impressive."

Her smile slowly faded.

Neither Dominic nor Mark reacted.

Mark looked like a man who had been dragged out of bed against his will, except...

Wait... that’s not the face of someone who’s sleepy.

That’s the face of someone attending their own funeral.

She wisely kept that observation to herself and looked back at Dominic.

"How can you hire a criminal?"

His calm voice instantly pulled her attention back.

Clara swallowed.

She knew Gen had been homeless, but discovering she had once been convicted of murdering her own mother had been shocking, even to her.

(Does she have any sense of self-preservation? She hired a convicted murderer... and then even lied to protect her after the missing money incident.)

Clara offered an awkward smile.

As expected...

Nothing escaped this man’s eyes.

"People can change," she said patiently. "And as the file says, Gen was released early because of her exemplary behavior. She’s hardworking, honest, and—"

"But a criminal is still a criminal."

Dominic didn’t let her finish.

"What if the man who came looking for her is an accomplice? What if she’s still involved with him?"

He genuinely couldn’t understand how Clara’s brain functioned anymore.

The old Clara had been predictable.

This one...

(Did she misplace her common sense... or was she simply born without it?)

Clara’s eye twitched.

Excuse me?!

Here he was insulting her internally while maintaining the expression of an emotionless marble statue.

She wanted to argue.

Desperately.

Instead, she inhaled deeply before turning toward the only innocent victim in the room.

"Mark."

Mark immediately straightened.

"When someone sincerely wants to start over..." Clara asked with an innocent smile, "...shouldn’t they be given another chance?"

Mark froze.

His eyes darted from Clara... to Dominic... then back to Clara.

(Is she sacrificing me to Boss?)

His survival instincts screamed.

He cautiously opened his mouth.

"I-I think—"

"Be truthful," Clara warned sweetly. "Otherwise I’ll butcher you myself."

Mark stiffened.

His eyes widened in horror.

(...Did she just read my mind?)

He stared at her like she’d suddenly grown a second head.

He had overheard Clara and Hannah’s drunken conversation the other night about hearing thoughts.

Naturally...

He’d dismissed it as alcohol-induced nonsense.

Now he wasn’t so sure.

"W-Wait... Madam..." Mark said, pointing at her. "How did you know what I was thinking?"

Clara gasped dramatically.

"Seriously?!"

Her eyes sparkled.

"You were thinking I’d butcher you?"

Does this mean...

I can hear everyone’s thoughts now?!

Her excitement shot through the roof.

Mark scratched his head awkwardly.

"Uh... not exactly."

"Huh?"

"It wasn’t you doing the butchering."

He slowly pointed beside her.

"It was Boss."

Silence.

The dazzling sparkle disappeared from Clara’s eyes.

Her triumphant grin crumbled into a deadpan expression.

She slowly turned toward Dominic.

Dominic simply raised an eyebrow.

(Accurate assessment.)

"..."

Clara looked back at Mark with the expression of someone whose lifelong dream had just been crushed.

"So..." she sighed dramatically.

"I still can’t hear everyone’s thoughts."

Her shoulders slumped in disappointment.

"What a useless upgrade," Clara muttered to herself with a disappointed sigh.

Dominic and Mark exchanged confused glances.

Neither of them had heard what she said, but watching her hold a conversation with herself was becoming increasingly concerning.

"But still!"

Mark nearly jumped out of his skin when Clara suddenly looked at him with a determined expression.

"You have to answer honestly," she declared, pointing a finger at him. "Otherwise, the offer still stands."

"Offer?" Mark cried in disbelief. "Madam, you literally threatened to butcher me! How is that an offer? I won’t even live long enough to use my insurance!"

He turned toward Dominic with teary eyes.

"Boss, this is workplace bullying!"

Dominic didn’t even spare him a glance.

"Answer her," he said calmly. "And be mindful if you don’t want to lose your job."

"..."

Why me... why is it always me?

Mark silently mourned his miserable fate.

Just as he was about to answer, his phone suddenly rang.

His eyes lit up as if the heavens themselves had answered his prayers.

"Oh! Boss, this is... extremely urgent."

Before either of them could respond, Mark grabbed his phone and disappeared out of the study.

The door had barely finished closing behind him.

Clara blinked.

"...That was fast."

She stared at the empty doorway.

"I swear I felt a gust of wind."

Dominic frowned.

(Bad wife. Praising another man right in front of her husband.)

Clara froze.

Then... the corners of her lips slowly curled upward.

So that’s what was bothering him?

***

Outside the study, Mark finally stopped running.

He bent over with both hands on his knees, breathing as though he’d escaped a life-threatening disaster.

"Safe..."

He glanced at his phone.

The call had lasted only a second before disconnecting, but the moment he saw the caller’s name, his exhausted face softened.

"Hannah..."

A small smile unconsciously appeared on his lips.

Without wasting another second, he immediately called her back.

The phone rang.

Once. Twice. Three times.

No answer.

"Huh?"

Mark frowned at the screen.

"Why call me if you’re not going to pick up?"

***

Inside the study...

Clara suddenly stood up.

"You know what? Mark is actually the smartest person in this house."

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

"He read the room, escaped at lightning speed, and left the two of us here to deal with..." She pointed at him dramatically.

"...this stiff block of ice."

Dominic’s expression remained unchanged.

"Sensible?" he repeated.

"No."

"That is called cowardice."

"He abandoned his post when he should’ve answered your question."

(She thinks he’s sensible? That man disappeared the entire day without informing me, then casually returned when I was about to leave for home.)

Clara’s eyes widened.

Seriously?

Dominic continued with the same indifferent expression.

(Maybe I should transfer him to another branch.)

Clara’s head snapped toward him.

Clara’s head snapped toward Dominic.

Suddenly, she remembered her conversation with Hannah.

When Clara had casually asked how Mark had managed to deal with her drunk self, Hannah had awkwardly dodged the question and changed the subject altogether.

At the time, Clara hadn’t thought much of it.

But now... her gaze slowly shifted toward the closed study door.

A little too suspicious...

Her eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

Did something happen between those two?
