Rebirth: My CEO Husband's Thoughts Are Too Shameless
Chapter 91: She is the distressClara clearly believed that these men had forgotten what they had come here for until one of them spoke.
"What did you say?"
Oh, they didn’t
Clara blinked innocently. "Oh, nothing." She then looked around dramatically. "I was just wondering why I suddenly smell expired perfume and bad decisions."
"..."
The smile on the men’s faces stiffened. Their expressions quickly darkened.
Clara folded her arms, completely unfazed. The way they were staring at her made her skin crawl. But it also made her knuckles itch.
Wonderful, she thought.
I just had a peaceful conversation with Mom... and now the universe has sent me two walking headaches.
She sighed dramatically. "Can one of you explain why you’re blocking my way? Because if this is another failed kidnapping attempt, I’d really appreciate a little originality this time."
The taller man let out a cold laugh.
"You’ve got quite the sharp tongue."
Clara shrugged. "I know. It’s one of my best qualities."
The shorter man took a step closer, his smile making Clara even more uncomfortable.
"We’ve been looking for you."
"Oh?" Clara raised an eyebrow. "What an unfortunate coincidence."
She looked at the empty street before glancing back at them. "I wasn’t looking for either of you."
The two men exchanged a glance, and the moment Clara took a step forward, the two reacted. "You’ll have to come with us."
Clara stared at them for a few seconds before pointing at herself. "Me?"
"Yes."
"No thanks." She smiled politely. "I already have plans."
The taller man frowned. "That wasn’t a request."
Clara’s smile widened. "And that wasn’t an acceptance."
"..."
The atmosphere instantly became tense. The shorter man reached out, intending to grab her wrist.
Before his fingers could even touch her—
Smack!
Clara slapped his hand away.
"Ow!" He yanked his hand back in pain.
Clara clicked her tongue. "My husband would be very unhappy if another man touched me."
She dusted off her sleeve as though he had contaminated it. "So let’s all make good life choices today."
The taller man’s patience snapped. "Don’t test us!"
"Oh?" Clara tilted her head. "I thought I already was."
The shorter man rubbed his reddened hand and glared at her. "Do you know who we work for?"
Clara answered without missing a beat. "Someone with terrible hiring standards."
The man’s face turned green with anger. " You—"
"No, wait." Clara suddenly interrupted him. She squinted at both of them before snapping her fingers.
"I’ve figured it out."
The two men instinctively straightened.
"You two must be the finalists in the ’Most Punchable Faces of the Year’ competition."
"..."
"You’ve got matching expressions and everything."
The taller man’s eye twitched violently. "Enough!"
He stepped forward again, only for Clara to leisurely crack her knuckles. A bright, excited smile spread across her face.
"Perfect. I’ve been in such a good mood today that I was wondering how to burn off all this extra energy."
She looked at the pair as though they were a gift that had fallen from the sky.
"Looks like the universe answered my prayers."
For some reason, both men suddenly felt a chill run down their spines. The woman standing before them didn’t seem frightened at all. In fact, she looked genuinely excited.
The shorter man leaned closer to his companion and lowered his voice.
"...Are you sure we’re supposed to scare her?"
The tall man kept his eyes on Clara.
"What do you mean?"
"The guy who hired us said she was some helpless woman." He swallowed. "But... does she look helpless to you?"
The tall man stole another glance at Clara. She was casually stretching her shoulders, rolling her wrists, and cracking her knuckles with an expression that looked... suspiciously excited.
His eyelid twitched.
"Don’t overthink it," he muttered. "Just do the job."
Meanwhile, Clara narrowed her eyes. She couldn’t hear everything they were saying, but their constant whispering was starting to annoy her.
"Well?" She folded her arms. "Have you two finished your secret meeting?"
"If you’re deciding who gets beaten up first, I don’t mind helping."
The taller man’s face darkened.
"Get her!"
The moment the words left his mouth, he lunged toward Clara. The shorter man grit his teeth and charged after him.
Clara sighed dramatically.
"I was hoping you’d make better life choices."
The taller man reached for her shoulder. Before he could touch her—
Whoosh!
Clara sidestepped with ease.
His hand grabbed nothing but air. "What—" but before he could react—
Thud!
Clara drove her elbow straight into his ribs.
"Ugh!" He stumbled sideways, clutching his side.
The shorter man seized the opportunity and swung a punch toward her face.
Clara tilted her head. The fist swept harmlessly past her cheek.
"So slow." She caught his wrist in one smooth motion.
"Wha—" Before he could finish—
Bang!
A swift kick landed squarely on his stomach, and the man folded over with a painful groan before collapsing onto one knee.
The taller man roared in frustration and rushed at her again. Clara simply smiled.
"Round two already?" She pivoted on one foot.
Smack!
Her palm struck the side of his face, sending him staggering into his partner.
The two men crashed into each other before tumbling to the ground in a tangled heap.
Clara dusted off her hands as though she’d just finished kneading dough.
She looked down at the groaning pair and clicked her tongue. "I expected kidnappers. Instead, I got the discount version."
Both men stared at her in horror.
Who exactly did our boss tell us to kidnap?
This woman wasn’t a damsel in distress.
She was the distress.
Meanwhile, hidden behind the crumbling wall of a nearby alley, Alex watched everything unfold.
At first, everything had gone exactly according to his plan.
He had hired the two men to frighten Clara just enough so that he could step in at the perfect moment, play the hero, and earn her gratitude.
It was a simple plan. Or at least, it was supposed to be.
Instead... he watched one man clutch his ribs while the other lay curled up on the ground, groaning in pain.
Clara, on the other hand, looked perfectly fine. She didn’t even seem out of breath.
Alex blinked in disbelief.
"...Since when does she know how to fight?"
