In the middle of the night, a little girl suddenly appeared at the window. Gu Lingqiao felt a chill in her heart, trying to calm her emotions: "I... I... I’m going to sleep, you... you better leave quickly, or I’ll call for help."
Despite her efforts, there was still an undeniable tremor in her voice.
The appearance of this little girl was too eerie, and Gu Lingqiao noticed that though the two windows in the room were identical, the other one was pitch black and showed no view outside, yet the window where the girl appeared had a glowing light that seemed natural, like daylight.
When she first saw the little girl, Gu Lingqiao thought it was daybreak, but gradually she realized something was off. Why was one window so dark and the other so bright?
"Waaah...! Sister doesn’t like Xiao Taohong." Xiao Taohong suddenly burst into tears, and tears flowed from her eyes, forming two trails of blood.
"Ah...! Help...!"
Seeing this scene, Gu Lingqiao was terrified, hiding herself completely under the covers, shivering all over.
The old maid living in the outer room heard the scream and rushed in without even putting on her coat.
"Miss, miss, what’s wrong?"
"Ghost... ghost... there’s a ghost!"
Gu Lingqiao was hiding under the quilt, screaming uncontrollably.
The old maid held a lantern, looked around the room, but found no trace of anything amiss.
The old maid came to the bedside and asked, "Miss, were you dreaming? There’s no one in the room."
Gu Lingqiao cautiously lifted the quilt from her head, sneaked a look around, and the bleeding-eyed little girl was nowhere to be seen. Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief: "I was scared to death, there’s a ghost, really there’s a ghost."
Despite Gu Lingqiao’s explanation, the old maid didn’t believe her at all, thinking she was muddled from sleep, experiencing hallucinations, thus babbling nonsense, and said, "Miss, you must have been confused from sleep, experiencing a hallucination. There’s no such thing as ghosts."
"No no no, really, really there’s a ghost." Gu Lingqiao wished that everything she’d seen was false, but faced with the undeniable truth, she had no choice but to believe.
"Alright, don’t make a fuss! It’s the middle of the night, it wouldn’t be good to wake the Prince."
"But I’m scared!"
"Miss doesn’t need to be afraid, the maid is here with you."
"Then don’t leave, okay!"
"I won’t leave."
Only then did Gu Lingqiao slowly lie back down, but she feared the old maid would go out, and kept her eyes wide watching her.
"Miss, sleep. The maid is here watching you!"
"Nanny, don’t leave."
"The maid won’t leave."
And like this, they repeated back and forth for a long time. Finally, Gu Lingqiao was too tired and couldn’t help but fall asleep, bringing peace to the world.
The old maid breathed a sigh of relief, realizing the young lady’s condition was getting worse. It couldn’t go on, she must hurry to inform the Master. Should any problems arise here, the Master would also have contingency plans.
The next day, before dawn, Gu Lingqiao woke up and couldn’t fall back asleep, the scene from last night was too real. Who really was that little girl? Why did she say she’d been by her side all along?
Old Maid: "Miss, it’s not daylight yet, sleep a bit longer!"
Gu Lingqiao: "No, my heart’s not at ease, I won’t sleep."
Old Maid: "What’s the matter?"
Gu Lingqiao: "Nanny, last night I really saw a ghost!"
Old Maid: "Again with the nonsense."
Gu Lingqiao: "It’s really not nonsense, there really was a ghost!"
"Alright, alright, there’s a ghost, there’s a ghost." The old maid was too lazy to argue with her, simply going along with her words.
Gu Lingqiao: "Nanny, do you think we should tell the Prince about it?"
Old Maid: "Tell him what? Are you going to tell him there’s a ghost in the Prince’s Mansion?"
