The Emperor has always wanted to get rid of him, poisoning him, hiring assassins and all that. Long Rui has long been displeased with The Emperor, so when he heard The Emperor was scared out of his wits by the Empress Dowager’s corpse, he was secretly delighted.
Xuexue’s smile was half real, half not. "Prince, you look quite happy, don’t you? Don’t tell me this was your doing?"
Long Rui nodded slightly. "I wanted to make a move too, but before I could, someone else did. Now that the Empress Dowager is dead, I’ve lost my chance."
Xuexue: "It really wasn’t you?"
Long Rui shook his head. "No."
Xuexue thought for a moment, then said, "Even if this wasn’t your doing, I’m afraid The Emperor will still suspect it was you."
Across the entire Imperial Court, Long Rui’s faction was the strongest. Who would dare sneak into the Imperial Palace to murder the Empress Dowager? Aside from him, there really was no one else. On top of that, The Emperor had never been able to stand Long Rui, so he was the prime suspect. That was only to be expected.
Long Rui said carelessly, "Let him think whatever he wants."
Xuexue frowned. "Letting things drag on like this isn’t a solution either. Prince, have you made no plans for the future?"
Rather than letting The Emperor constantly suspect and ostracize him, Long Rui’s confidants kept urging him to rebel so he wouldn’t have to live under the Dog Emperor’s thumb. But Long Rui had never taken that step.
"My lady, don’t bring that up." Long Rui clearly didn’t want to talk about rebellion.
The Emperor might be unjust, but he could not be unrighteous.
So be it. Since Long Rui was unwilling, Xuexue didn’t force him.
Just then, the steward came to report that someone outside was asking to see the Prince.
Long Rui asked, "Who?"
The steward was puzzled too. Last night an assassin had broken into the Prince’s Mansion, and now this visitor was actually claiming he was an old friend of the Prince and Princess Consort, and that he’d come calling last night as well.
Steward: "I do not recognize him. He says he is an old friend of the Prince and Princess Consort, and that he came to call on you last night."
On hearing this, the two of them exchanged a look. They’d heard from Long Yi that the Elder in the underground palace had come by last night. Later, the Weirdo had fought with him for a while, and the two had left one after the other.
He’d attacked their Mansion last night and still dared to come to the door today. Long Rui was curious to see what tricks he wanted to play, so he said, "Invite him in."
"Yes."
The steward answered and turned to go out.
Very soon, he led the Elder inside.
The Elder was tidied up neatly, looking completely different from when they parted ways before. He wore a dark long robe, his beard carefully groomed. He looked to be around fifty. After this round of grooming, it was clear that in his youth he must have been a handsome man.
"This humble one greets the Prince and Princess Consort." The Elder knelt respectfully and offered them a deep bow.
Long Rui and Xuexue found it odd. This man had come to attack the War Prince’s Mansion just last night; how was it that today he seemed like a different person?
Could it be he was putting on this act to achieve his goal, playing some sort of scheme?
Long Rui said mildly, "Senior, there’s no need for such ceremony. Please rise."
As the saying goes, a visitor is a guest. Since he was being so polite, they couldn’t very well treat him too harshly.
"Thank you, Prince, Princess Consort."
The Elder handed the gifts in his hands to the steward, then said, "Prince, Princess Consort, last night this humble one was misled by slander and fell for someone else’s plot. I greatly offended you. Today I’ve brought these modest gifts to plead guilty, and I hope the Prince and Princess Consort will be magnanimous and not lower yourselves to fuss over a small man like me."
As it turned out, the Elder was Lv Yinfeng from last night. After learning the truth from the Weirdo, he felt deeply guilty. At dawn he went out to buy gifts and rushed to the War Prince’s Mansion. The War Prince’s reputation was known throughout the realm; even the master of the underground palace was helping them. They must have abilities beyond the ordinary. From the bottom of his heart, Lv Yinfeng had begun to admire Long Rui and Xuexue.
