"Miss Gu has been clamoring all along that she was childhood friends with the Prince. Now that he’s ill, shouldn’t she help wipe his sweat?"

Xuexue’s lips curled into a sarcastic smile. Just now, it was all Brother Rui this and Brother Rui that, and in the blink of an eye, she changes her tune.

Gu Lingqiao lowered her head, her eyes darting about: "I... I..."

Suddenly, as if she remembered something, she turned her head and scolded the old maid: "You wretched servant, are you deaf? Didn’t you hear the Princess Consort call you to wipe the Prince’s sweat? Hurry up!"

The old maid showed a trace of anger on her face, but she quickly bowed her head, her hair obscuring her expression, and said obediently: "Yes, this maid obeys!"

The old maid stepped toward the bed, but Xuexue raised her hand to stop her, saying lightly: "Nanny, it’s not necessary. Step back."

"Yes."

The old maid halted, retreated a few steps, and stood waiting at the side.

Gu Lingqiao secretly glanced at Long Rui lying on the bed, and saw that not only was his face covered in scars, but his skin was also uneven. He looked even more terrifying than Black and White Impermanence, no wonder he had the title of Ghost King. Her heart shuddered, for the War Prince was already frightening enough wearing a mask, but without it, he was even more terrifying. She was nearly scared to death catching a glimpse of Long Rui’s face earlier.

Gu Lingqiao whispered: "Since we are not needed to serve him, we shall take our leave."

Gu Lingqiao turned to sneak away.

Xuexue’s voice slowly echoed again: "Miss Gu has been clamoring to serve the Prince all the time. What’s the matter? Hardly are you here, and now you want to leave?"

Gu Lingqiao’s steps froze. She slowly turned around: "Princess Consort, what do you want?"

Xuexue said icily: "What’s the matter? Didn’t you used to call me sister? Miss Gu, why are you so distant today?"

Gu Lingqiao: "Didn’t the Princess Consort say I’m older than you? Lingling had to change the form of address."

Xuexue was about to speak when suddenly, she heard Long Rui coughing incessantly on the bed. Her heart surged with joy; has the Prince awakened?

Long Yi dashed to the bedside: "Prince, Prince, you finally woke up?"

The old maid and Gu Lingqiao exchanged a glance, and the old maid nodded silently to her. Gu Lingqiao understood, and quickly moved ahead of Xuexue to Long Rui’s side, crying bitterly: "Prince, you finally woke up. I was so worried!"

As she spoke, she picked up a towel from the small wooden basin, wrung out the water, and carefully began to wipe Long Rui’s sweat: "Prince, are you feeling a bit better?"

Long Rui didn’t speak; he looked past her body and stared at Xuexue, his expression full of confusion. How did he return here?

Xuexue stepped forward and said: "Prince, we rescued you. Don’t you remember?"

Long Rui thought carefully for a moment, then recalled being trapped in the carriage, crying out for help to no avail. It was then Xuexue appeared and got him down from the carriage, after which he lost consciousness.

Long Rui moved slightly, feeling incredibly heavy, as if a mountain was crushing him. He didn’t have the strength to lift a hand or foot.

"Xuexue, what’s wrong with me?" Long Rui asked weakly.

Before Xuexue could reply, Gu Lingqiao jumped in: "Prince, you’re ill. Lingling was so worried and has been taking care of you nonstop!"

Long Rui glanced at her and said: "Lingling, your efforts are commendable!"

Gu Lingqiao lowered her head, smiling bashfully, her voice coy as she said: "Lingling grew up with Brother Rui, so it’s only right for Lingling to take care of him."
