Rebirth: Saving the Lovely Girl from the Start
Chapter 280 - 258: Parental Deterrence (2)As Xue Rui took the soup, he instinctively gulped. The young woman seemed to understand something, but she didn’t call him out on it, only suggesting he make the call inside.
Lin Ruoxi didn’t press him further on the previous question, and Xue Rui never answered who he was calling.
’But Ruoxi had already brought up Gu Muxue’s name. She must know something...’
But even though she’d said that, Xue Rui didn’t dare.
’If I make a video call in the room, Ruoxi will quickly figure out my relationship with Gu Muxue. And if something goes wrong, Gu Muxue will find out that Ruoxi exists...’
’Wouldn’t that be a total disaster?’
Just as he was thinking this, Yu Minlan suddenly burst out of the house, snatched the bowl of soup from Xue Rui’s hands, and took a huge gulp.
"Ahh, that’s better!" Yu Minlan exclaimed, her chest rising and falling.
She had been choking on her food just now and had wanted to come out for a cup of water. But the moment she stepped outside, she saw the two of them kissing.
Not wanting to disturb them, she had tried to just force the food down her throat. But then Xue Rui’s scumbag monologue had her choking all over again. This time, she really couldn’t get it down and had no choice but to run out for something to drink.
The young woman frowned. Seeing Yu Minlan use Xue Rui’s bowl, she felt a pang of unhappiness. She refilled the bowl and handed it to Yu Minlan. "Sister Yu, you can have this bowl."
With that, Lin Ruoxi got a new bowl and filled it to the brim for Xue Rui.
Yu Minlan was a little taken aback. ’Why would Lin Ruoxi be jealous of me?’
’Lin Ruoxi was like an unattainable white swan. In comparison, I barely qualify as an ugly duckling. Why would Xue Rui ever be interested in me?’
’I’d better go hide and eat by myself. Otherwise, these two will just ruin my appetite.’
Xue Rui frowned. The young woman’s actions just now had been far too deliberate.
’Right. Love inevitably comes with a sense of possessiveness.’
The young woman liked him and wanted to give him the best of everything. She wouldn’t even let him use something she had already used herself—unless he was the one who wanted to.
Xue Rui reached out, snatched the bowl from the young woman’s hands, and drained it in one go.
Lin Ruoxi watched Xue Rui with a beaming smile. She said nothing, only adding a little more soup to his bowl.
She hadn’t confessed her feelings, and he hadn’t said anything explicit, but this life, right now, was exactly what she wanted most.
As for the business with her classmate Gu Muxue, Xue Rui wasn’t talking, and she no longer wanted to ask.
Xue Rui had spent a lot of time with the young woman. He knew that even though she seemed happy now, there were moments when her cheerful expression would falter for an instant.
Xue Rui guessed she was still dwelling on that question from before. He picked up a bite of food and said, "I was on the phone with Gu Muxue, discussing schoolwork. We’re friends."
Of course, he had once again conveniently omitted the "girl" from "girlfriend."
Without a moment’s hesitation, Lin Ruoxi smiled and nodded lightly. "Mm-hm."
’She knew he probably wasn’t telling the truth, but as long as she chose to believe him, it was true.’
Xue Rui sighed. ’The young woman has gotten so sharp lately,’ he thought. ’With her intelligence, there’s no way she doesn’t understand. She’s just indulging me, believing in me unconditionally.’
’If I keep tricking her, will she eventually stop trusting me?’
He’d never really considered that possibility.
Although Lin Ruoxi was exceptionally talented in her own right, her upbringing had left her with a deep-seated sense of inferiority. She and Gu Muxue were complete opposites.
In truth, with Lin Ruoxi’s disposition, how could she ever fight or scramble for anything? She just wanted to keep Xue Rui in her own little world. That was all.
When it cooled down a little in the afternoon, Yu Minlan drove the two of them to the beach.
It was the height of summer vacation, a weekend, and also the Qixi Festival, so the popular beaches were absolutely packed...
For people from landlocked provinces, seeing the ocean was like someone from the south seeing snow for the first time—they were all as excited as children...
Xue Rui knew Ruoxi would love it. In the month she’d been in Shencheng, he hadn’t taken her out, and so she had patiently refrained from going to see it herself.
Ruoxi bought a pair of flip-flops from a roadside stall. Gazing at the azure ocean and the sea of bobbing heads, she was momentarily stunned.
"Come on," Xue Rui said, pulling the young woman toward the shore.
"Hmm, it’s not as pretty up close..." Lin Ruoxi said, tilting her head. The seawater at her feet was murky, a far cry from how it looked from a distance.
Still, she hadn’t had high expectations to begin with. She just wanted to be out with Xue Rui.
"The ocean is meant to be admired from a distance," Xue Rui said with a nod.
"I... I can’t swim. It’s better to stay further away." Lin Ruoxi didn’t head into the water. Instead, she stayed on the sand, wandering about obediently and glancing every so often at the children playing.
Xue Rui nudged Yu Minlan beside him. "Go buy a set."
Xue Rui pulled the young woman over to an open spot and began to stake out their territory. "You draw over there, I’ll draw over here, and we’ll connect them to make a circle."
"Okay!" Lin Ruoxi chirped, hopping over to start drawing her part of the circle behind Xue Rui.
However, the arc Xue Rui drew was too large, while Lin Ruoxi’s was too small. The two lines didn’t meet at all.
"Yours is too small," Xue Rui said. The area Lin Ruoxi had marked out was tiny.
"It’s big enough for the two of us," Lin Ruoxi said meekly.
Just then, Yu Minlan returned with a plastic bucket of toys. ’I was only gone for a few minutes,’ she thought, ’and Lin Ruoxi has already excluded me.’
Xue Rui casually took a shovel and began digging up a pile of sand for Lin Ruoxi.
The young woman also grabbed a shovel and started digging with all her might, trying to imitate the children in the distance and build a small castle.
Lin Ruoxi was full of childlike innocence, but he just couldn’t get into it. With sand filling the gaps between his fingers, he found it hard to appreciate the fun.
