Aaron looked back at him, his expression entirely unreadable.

Aaron leaned down to whisper something to Niko, handing Isabella’s arm over to the lawyer. "Take her inside," Aaron said quietly. "I’ll be right behind you."

Niko nodded, guiding Isabella carefully past the reporters and up the concrete steps. Isabella walked quietly, her dark glasses hiding her eyes, her hand resting trustingly on Niko’s arm.

Aaron didn’t follow immediately. Instead, he turned and walked slowly across the stone plaza directly toward Kian.

Kian didn’t back down. He stood his ground, letting Aaron approach until the two men were standing just two feet apart in front of the flashing cameras.

"Kazarov," Kian said, his voice dripping with smooth arrogance.

Aaron looked down at him, a faint, slow smile touching his lips. "Impressive moves, Carter. Truly."

Kian tilted his head slightly. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"The maid vanishing into thin air," Aaron said, his voice low enough that only Kian could hear. "A tragic, convenient fire at the lab just hours before the hearing. You’ve been very busy."

Aaron stepped just half an inch closer, his blue eyes turning lethally cold. "I almost admire it. I underestimated how much you’d rather lose your own life than let her go."

Kian didn’t flinch. He didn’t confirm or deny a single word. Instead, he gave Aaron a cold, mocking smirk.

"You talk too much, Kazarov," Kian whispered viciously. "You look weak. Hiding behind your money while I take back what’s mine. If I were you, I’d watch my back."

Aaron didn’t get angry. He simply let out a low, amused breath and smiled, a dark, terrifying smile that sent a subtle chill through the air.

"I always do," Aaron replied smoothly.

Kian turned on his heel without another word, turning his back on Aaron and walking through the heavy double doors of the courthouse.

Aaron stayed outside on the wide stone steps for a few seconds longer, calmly pulling a cigarette from his silver case and lighting it, watching the crowd of reporters with lazy disinterest.

Inside the courthouse hallway, the air was quiet away from the press.

Kian walked down the wide marble corridor, his eyes searching for Isabella. He found her standing near the entrance of the courtroom, holding her purse with both hands. Niko was standing right beside her, speaking to her in a low, comforting tone.

A sudden, overwhelming urge seized Kian. He wanted to walk right up to her, grab her by her small waist, and pull her against his chest.

He took three fast steps toward her.

Niko caught the movement instantly. He stepped directly into Kian’s path, placing his broad frame squarely between Kian and Isabella.

Niko’s eyes were hard, tracking the hallway behind Kian to see if Aaron was coming back, but holding his ground firmly.

Kian stopped dead.

His dark eyes dropped to Niko’s face. For one brief, terrifying second, Kian’s old assassin instincts flared to the surface.

A violent, bloodthirsty impulse screamed inside his mind.

Reach out. Grab his neck. Break it. He could picture it so clearly, the snap of bone, the sudden silence, clearing the path between him and his wife.

The air around Kian went dead cold.

Niko felt it instantly. The sheer, suffocating bloodlust radiating off Kian was terrifying.

Kian loomed over him like a shadow, carrying the silent, lethal aura of a man who had killed more times than he could count. Niko had seen dangerous men in Aaron’s orbit, but Kian’s darkness was quiet, sharp, and psychotic.

Yet, despite the cold sweat breaking out on the back of his neck, Niko didn’t move an inch.

He had seen Aaron snap before, and compared to Aaron Kazarov’s wrath, Kian Carter was nothing he would back down from.

"Get the fuck out of my way," Kian said, his voice barely a breath, but loaded with lethal threat.

"You don’t step an inch closer to her," Niko replied, his voice firm, refusing to yield.

The tension stretched like a wire about to snap.

Behind Niko, Isabella heard the harsh edge in Kian’s voice and the sudden stillness in the hall. She froze on instinct, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Niko," Isabella said softly, her voice cutting through the heavy silence. "Stand down."

Niko hesitated, keeping his eyes locked on Kian. "Isabella, you don’t have to..."

"It’s fine, Niko. Please," she repeated, her voice steady.

Niko took a slow breath and stepped aside, though his hands remained clenched into tight fists at his sides.

Isabella took a single, small step forward.

Even in her total darkness, her senses instantly dialed into Kian’s presence.

She smelled his cologne, that familiar, expensive scent of dark amber that had filled her life for years.

A sickly, painful twist hit her stomach. As much as it repulsed her, as much as it terrified her, her traitorous body recognized him.

She could picture him in her mind down to the finest detail: his sharp jaw, his cold dark eyes, the tailored cut of his dark suit.

Kian’s gaze softened the second she stepped toward him. All the violent rage that had been boiling toward Niko evaporated into thin air.

He stared at her beautiful face, his chest tightening.

For a long, rare moment, the arrogant, calculating Kian Carter was completely speechless.

Isabella broke the silence first. She tilted her head slightly toward the sound of his breathing.

"Are you happy now, Kian?" she asked, her voice light, carrying a quiet, bitter chuckle.

Kian’s brow furrowed. "What?"

"Don’t pretend you don’t understand," she said, her sightless dark eyes fixed directly on his face.

"Are you happy now that you forced me onto that table? Happy that you dragged me through the mud and forced me to prove the pregnancy?"

Kian’s face hardened, his voice dropping into a tight, frustrated register. "I shouldn’t have had to force anything, Isabella! You’re my wife! You hid it from me! You ran away to another man’s house while carrying my child, why did you leave me in the first place?!"

Hearing those words, hearing the sheer nerve of his questioning, sent a sudden, hot flash of anger burning through Isabella’s veins.

"I did what you wanted!" she snapped, her voice trembling with raw emotion.

Kian went utterly still. "Why do you keep saying that?! This was never what I wanted!"

"Because you already had Alice!" Isabella blurted out, the words exploding from her mouth like shattered glass. "You spent night after night in her bed while lying to my face! Do you think I’m stupid, Kian?!"

The words hit Kian like a physical blow.

He froze, his jaw dropping open slightly, his dark eyes widening in complete, unadulterated shock. The world around him seemed to stop spinning.

Alice.

She knew.

How could she possibly know? She was blind. She was dependent on him. She had spent months isolated in their home, completely cut off from his outer world.

He had hidden every trace, wiped every detail, believing his secret affair was utterly invisible to her.

Before Kian could form a single word, before he could open his mouth to deny it or scream for an explanation, the heavy oak doors of the courtroom creaked open behind them.

"The court is now in session," the bailiff’s booming voice echoed down the marble hallway. "All parties enter."

Aaron walked up the hall at that exact moment, stepping smoothly past Kian, his hand landing on the small of Isabella’s back, guiding her gently into the courtroom.

Arthur grabbed Kian’s arm, pulling his shocked, unmoving client toward their table.

Kian moved like a ghost, his mind completely shattered by the words still ringing in his ears, his eyes fixed on the back of Isabella’s head as Judge Daniel took his seat at the bench.
