Alice stood in the middle of the grand room, staring at her phone screen. The headlines burned into her eyes.

The comments calling Isabella a tragic heroine, the speculation about Kian fighting for his child... it was all too much.

"NO!" Alice shrieked, her face twisting into absolute rage.

With a raw, animalistic scream, she whirled around and slammed her phone into the solid marble fireplace mantel.

The screen shattered instantly before dropping to the polished floor in useless pieces.

Alice didn’t stop.

She grabbed a crystal vase from a side table and hurled it across the room. It shattered against the wall, sending glass and water everywhere.

She kicked over a velvet armchair, her breathing heavy, her chest heaving as she tore through the room like a tornado.

"Alice! Stop it! Control yourself!"

Her mother, Aria, rushed into the room, holding a cup of tea close as she looked at the destruction in horror. "What has gotten into you?!"

"SHE’S PREGNANT!" Alice screamed at the top of her lungs, her hands clutching her head, her face red and wet with tears of pure malice. "THAT BLIND BITCH IS PREGNANT! IT’S IN ALL THE PAPERS!"

"Calm down!" Aria demanded, coming over to grab Alice’s shaking shoulders. "It’s just rumors! The press doesn’t know anything! She might not even be pregnant!"

"SHE IS!" Alice spat, her eyes wild. "I know it! I feel it! And it belongs to Kian! It doesn’t belong to Aaron, it belongs to Kian!"

"Even if it does, or even if it belongs to Kazarov—"

"I DON’T CARE WHOSE IT IS!" Alice roared, shoving her mother’s hands away.

"Do you think I want her having Aaron’s baby either?! Aaron is supposed to be ’mine’! He’s rich, he’s powerful, he has everything, and he’s spending millions fighting for a blind, useless cripple! Why her?! Why does she always get everything?!"

Alice began pacing like a caged beast, her nails digging into her own palms.

"She always had everyone’s attention," Alice whimpered, her voice dropping into a bitter, venomous whisper.

"She got the title of the perfect daughter. She got Kian first. And now, even when I finally took Kian from her, she leaves and gets Aaron Kazarov! And now Kian wants her back?! He’s stalling the divorce, he’s fighting for her, he’s looking at her like she’s the only thing that matters!"

"Alice, listen to me—"

"No! Kian is a fool!" Alice snarled, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "He had her for years, he could have broken her completely, but he got weak! He started caring! He took too long to get rid of her!"

Alice suddenly stopped pacing. Her heavy breathing began to slow.

The manic rage on her face slowly smoothed out, replaced by a quiet, eerie stillness. A small, twisted smile crept onto her lips as a terrible thought took root in her head.

"Everything would be so simple..." Alice whispered, staring at her own reflection in the broken glass on the floor. "Everything in my life would be completely perfect... if Isabella would just die."

A soft, dark laugh escaped her chest.

"Kian grew a heart," Alice murmured, her eyes shining with manic light. "He’s too soft to finish it. So I’ll just have to do the job myself."

Thousands of feet up in the air, inside the luxurious leather interior of the Kingston private jet, Kian Carter sat near the oval window, a glass of scotch resting in his hand.

He was flying out for an emergency multi-million-dollar board meeting in London, but his mind wasn’t on business.

Work never stopped, but neither did the image burned into his brain from the courtroom.

He couldn’t stop thinking about Isabella’s face.

When Arthur had brought up the pregnancy, Kian had watched her pale skin drain to chalk. He had seen the sheer, unadulterated terror in her posture.

Sitting there in the court, every instinct inside him had screamed to break past the wooden bar, shove Aaron Kazarov out of the way, and grab Isabella by her wrists.

He wanted to drag her out into the hall, pin her against the wall, and force her to look at him, even knowing her sightless dark eyes couldn’t see him.

He wanted to feel her trembling against his chest. He wanted to hear her voice admit the truth: ’You left something inside me. You marked me forever, and you can’t erase it.’

The thought was an intoxicating poison. She was his. Blind, broken, hiding in another man’s house, it didn’t matter. She was carrying his blood.

His satellite phone chimed on the small wooden table beside him.

Kian picked it up, glancing at the unlisted number before pressing it to his ear. "Speak."

"Mr. Carter..." the runaway maid’s frantic voice came through the static. "It’s me! Clara! Kazarov knows! He figured out I was the one who listened at the door! His men are hunting the whole city for me right now! I’m not safe... you have to protect me!"

Kian leaned back in his leather seat, taking a slow sip of his scotch. A cold, calculating light settled in his eyes.

If Aaron caught the woman, she would break in five seconds under Kazarov’s interrogation methods.

Clara would tell him about the money Kian paid her, the threats he made, and the exact orders he gave. That would give Kazarov physical proof of tampering and witness intimidation.

He couldn’t let Kazarov have her.

"Calm down," Kian said, his voice smooth, warm, and entirely comforting. "You did good work. I don’t let my people get hurt. Send me your exact location right now. I’ll have my private security detail pick you up in a private car. They’ll take you to a safehouse near the coast and get you on a flight out of the country tonight. I’ll add fifty thousand to your payment for the trouble."

On the other end of the line, the maid let out a sob of relief. "Oh, thank God... thank you, Mr. Carter! I’m sending the location now!"

"Good," Kian said softly. "Wait by the side road. My men will be there in twenty minutes."

The call cut.

Kian set his glass down. He turned his head toward the front of the jet cabin, where Luke stood waiting.

"Luke," Kian said flatly.

Luke stepped forward, pulling out a small notebook. "Sir?"

Kian handed him the phone with the location pin. "The maid who gave us the information is hiding at this address. Send two men from the local team to pick her up."

"Understood, sir," Luke replied smoothly. "Shall I bring her to the safehouse?"

Kian looked out the window at the white clouds passing beneath the plane. His face was entirely devoid of emotion.

"No," Kian said quietly.

Luke didn’t blink. He didn’t ask questions. "Consider it handled, Mr. Carter."
