Eon stopped the young maid near the main doors. She carried a stack of clean clothes against her chest and looked up when he spoke.
“Sorry, I don’t know your name,” he said. “I just wanted to ask, where is your Countess?”
The maid shifted the clothes in her arms. “Oh, Madam Teressa? She and her personal maid Carla left just earlier, before you guys came back. I heard they took one of the elf women to a doctor Madam knows in the lower town.”
Elora, standing a few steps behind Eon, turned at the words. Elsa looked over from where she had been speaking with two of the new arrivals. Even Nora, still seated on the low stone wall, lifted her head.
Eon’s brow tightened. “What? They have gone to a doctor? Why? What happened? Who fell sick?”
“Uhh, that I don’t know. But I heard someone fell sick suddenly,” the maid answered.
“Madam said it looked serious. And since you guys were not back yet, she decided to take her there herself.”
Eon opened his mouth to ask why Teressa had gone in person instead of sending someone else. Then the answer came in his mind before the words left.
Hans was still in Hyra County. And most of the household staff had been released weeks ago on Eon’s own order, to keep rumors from spreading about the elves living in the mansion. Plus, there was a weird custom in the noble society here: a proper doctor from a noble household doesn’t answer a simple summons from a random servant. They only come when the butler or the head of the house calls them directly. And with both of those options not being available to her, Teressa might’ve been left with little choice. She must've taken the sick woman herself to someone she trusted.
Eon stayed quiet for a moment.
When he first met Teressa, he had not trusted her fully, even though he tried his best not to show it in his face. She was human, the Countess of a house that had kept elves in chains for years. He expected resistance, quiet complaints, or at least some pushback when he started changing the rules of the estate. Instead, she had done the opposite. She released most of the maids without argument when he asked. She adjusted room assignments, food stores, and daily schedules so the elves could move freely without drawing outside eyes. Every detail he requested, she handled thoroughly, as if the people under this roof were already her own responsibility. The first impression he carried of her had been greatly wrong. She kept proving it to him with her actions all along.
He let out a short breath through his nose. “I see. And the head maid? Where is she?”
Hearing Eon ask for the head maid, the young maid’s eyes dropped to the floor. Her fingers tightened on the edge of the folded clothes. She stayed quiet for a moment too long.
Eon watched her face. The hesitation told him enough.
A cold weight settled in his chest. He already knew what the head maid had been doing in the past. Before he arrived in this world and took control of the estate, he heard she had been the one who quietly brought women from outside for Julius, different faces, different ages, always available whenever the young master wanted them. Everyone in the household had known. No one had stopped it. Though he still had no idea if Teressa knew about it or not, he didn’t dare ask her about it. It felt too awkward to ask her about this subject. He tried to ignore it as long as he could. But now that they have started going back to their ways like before, he wasn’t planning on being kind to them. Yes, he felt a little bad for Teressa, Julius being her only son and all, but even that relationship has its limits.
He even only allowed that vile woman to keep her position as the head maid because Teressa asked him to. As the head maid had served the family since Julius was born, that long service was the only reason she still walked these halls.
But the situation had changed. Julius was no longer the free master of the house. The estate answered to Eon now. And still the woman had the nerve to continue the same work under his authority.
The more he thought about it, the more anger rose slowly and steadily under his ribs.
He turned without another word and started up the stairs that led toward the private rooms on the upper floors. His steps were even, but each one carried more weight than the last. Behind him he heard soft footsteps. Nora had left the stone wall and followed without being asked. She said nothing, simply staying a few paces back, not knowing why he suddenly got angry after the mention of the head maid.
They passed several closed doors. The hallway smelled of old wood and the faint trace of soap from the recent cleaning. Then Eon slowed.
A low sound came from behind Julius’s door. Soft at first, then clearer. It was a woman’s breathing sound, broken by short moans. The rhythmic creak of furniture could also be heard.
Hearing all of it, Eon’s jaw locked.
Nora stepped up beside him. She glanced at the door, then at Eon’s face, and moved forward as if ready to put her shoulder into the wood to force it open.
“I’ll open it for you,” she said quietly.
Eon raised one hand. “No need.”
As soon as he raised his hand, Mana suddenly stirred under his skin. He focused on the iron lock. A thin thread of light slipped into the mechanism, and the metal clicked right away, snapping open with a dull snap.
He pushed the door open.
The hinges creaked, but the two people inside did not notice the sound.
Julius sat on the wooden chair near the bed, pants pulled down around his knees. The head maid was straddling him, skirts pushed up around her waist, moving with steady, practiced rhythm.
The woman in question was in her fifties, not frail yet, not crumpled. Her dark hair was still thick, pulled back in a simple knot that had come partly loose. Her face carried the lines of age, but her body remained firm enough that the motion she was making looked natural rather than forced. Her hands rested on Julius’s shoulders. And his head was tilted back, eyes half-closed, one hand gripping her hip.
Neither of them looked toward the open door while doing whatever they were doing.
Eon stood in the doorway and stared for a full second. The anger that had been building since the maid’s silence suddenly vanished with the awkwardness of finding this out in this way. The situation only got worse as the two people he was watching make out were not even aware that they were being broadcast live.
Nora remained just behind his shoulder, expression flat, waiting to see what he would do.
