The marble stairs were slick under Elora’s boots. She gripped the banister, her fingers slipping on the polished wood as her knee buckled. The world tilted around her all of a sudden.
And then she was falling.
Before she fell, a strong arm banded around her waist, hauling her back against a solid chest. Eon’s breath was warm against her ear, his voice rough with amusement. "Careful. Unless you wanna become a staircase sacrifice tonight."
Elora giggled, the sound bubbling up from her chest as she sagged against him. The ale had settled in her veins, making her limbs heavy and her thoughts slow. But not slow enough to miss the way Eon’s body tensed when she pressed closer, or how his hands lingered at her hips a second too long before he set her upright.
"Mmm, my hero," she slurred, turning in his arms. The hallway spun lazily, the torchlight blurring into golden streaks. She blinked up at him, her vision clearing just enough to see the way his eyes caught the flickering light, the faint flush on his sharp cheekbones. He wasn’t as drunk as she was, just warm and loose enough that the usual guard in his posture had softened.
Eon exhaled through his nose, a sound that might have been a laugh. "You were already a disaster when you were sober tonight. Like this, you have become a catastrophe."
Elora grinned, slowly and deliberately. She reached up, her fingers brushing the stubble on his jaw. "And yet you’re still holding me."
His throat worked. "Because you’d break your neck otherwise."
"Yeah, such a gentleman." She let her hand drop, then fisted it in the front of his tunic, pulling him down until their faces were inches apart. The scent of his leather and that faint, earthy scent that was uniquely Eon filled her lungs. "Or are you just afraid I’ll kiss you if you let go?"
Eon’s eyes darkened. For a heartbeat, she thought he might actually step back. Then his lips quivered, just barely. "You couldn’t kiss straight right now even if your life depended on it."
Elora’s grin turned wicked. "Oh yeah?"
She surged forward but missed his mouth entirely, her lips landing awkwardly against his cheekbone. Eon burst out laughing, and Elora groaned, burying her face in his shoulder. "Ugh, shut up."
His chest shook with suppressed laughter as he wrapped an arm around her, steadying her. "Told you."
"Fine, fine, you win," she muttered, but then she tilted her head back, her gaze locking onto his. The humor faded from her expression, replaced by something hotter, something that made her pulse jump. "But I do win at other things."
Eon’s breath hitched. His fingers flexed against her waist, his thumb brushing the curve of her ribcage through the thin fabric of her dress. "Elora…"
She didn’t let him finish. She surged again.
This time, when she kissed him, she didn’t miss.
Her lips crashed against his, clumsy at first, then firmer as he stiffened in surprise. For a heartbeat, he didn’t move. Then, with a groan that vibrated against her mouth, his hands slid up her back, pulling her flush against him. His lips parted, his tongue sweeping against hers, and Elora made a sound low in her throat, her fingers tangling in his hair.
The kiss deepened, turning hungry. Eon’s hands roamed, one cupping the back of her head, the other sliding down to grip her hip, his fingers digging in flesh. Elora arched into him, her nails scraping against his scalp as she nipped at his lower lip. He tasted like ale and something addicting, something that made her head spin more than the drink ever could.
When they finally broke apart, both were breathless; Eon’s eyes were black with wanting for more. His chest rose and fell rapidly; his grip on her was almost painful. "You’re drunk," he said with his voice rough.
"So are you," she shot back, but her smile faltered when she saw the conflict in his gaze.
Eon exhaled sharply, his forehead resting against hers. "This isn’t…."
Elora cut him off with another kiss, slower this time, her lips soft against his. "I know what I’m doing," she murmured against his mouth. "And I want this. Want you."
For a second, she thought he might argue. But then his hands tightened on her, and he was lifting her up, her legs wrapped around his waist on instinct. She locked her ankles behind his back as he turned, pressing her against the nearest wall. The stone was cold through her dress, but Eon was burning; his body was like a furnace against hers.
The door to her room was just beside where they were standing. Eon carried her there without another word; his strides were long and hurried. Elora fumbled with the handle, her fingers slippery, but Eon batted her hand away, twisting the knob himself before kicking the door shut behind them.
The lock clicked into place.
The room was dark, the only light coming from the embers in the fireplace, casting long shadows across the bed. Eon didn’t bother with the lanterns. He didn’t bother with words, either.
His mouth crashed back onto hers as he walked them toward the bed, his hands already working at the laces of her dress. Elora gasped into the kiss, her back arching as his fingers brushed the skin of her stomach. The fabric loosened, slipping down her shoulders, and Eon broke the kiss just long enough to tug it the rest of the way off, tossing it aside.
Elora shivered as the cool air hit her skin, but Eon’s hands were there immediately, tracing the curve of her waist, the dip of her spine, the swell of her breasts. His callouses caught on her skin, sending sparks of sensation down her nerves. She moaned, her head falling back as his lips trailed down her throat, his teeth grazing her collarbone.
"Eon…" His name came out breathless, needy.
He hummed against her skin, his hands sliding up to cup one of her breasts, his thumbs brushing over her nipples. Elora jerked, a whimper escaping her as pleasure arced through her. Eon’s chuckle was dark, satisfied, before his mouth closed over one of the nipples, his tongue started swirling.
Elora’s fingers tangled in his hair, holding him there as her hips rolled against him. She could feel how hard he was, the ridge of his arousal pressing against her thigh, and she ground down, earning a groan from him.
"Patien…Elora, fuck…" Eon’s voice was rough as he pulled back, his breath coming fast. His hands dropped to her skirt, yanking it up, his fingers finding the damp heat between her thighs. Elora gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders as he stroked her; his touch was teasing and relentless.
"More," she demanded, her voice breaking. "I need more."
Eon didn’t make her ask twice.
The bed hit the back of her knees, and Elora tumbled onto the mattress; Eon followed her down. His weight pressed her into the sheets; his body was like a treat against hers. She wrapped her legs around his waist as he kissed her again, his hips rolling against hers in a rhythm that made her see stars.
His hands were everywhere, gripping her thighs, squeezing her breasts, sliding between them to tease her until she was squirming beneath him. Elora fumbled with the fastenings of his trousers; her fingers were getting clumsy in her haste. Eon stopped her hands away, sitting back just long enough to strip, his shirt joining the growing pile of discarded clothes of theirs on the floor.
Elora’s breath got caught at the sight of his body. She had seen him back at the inn, but then it was too dark for her to see. Not that it was very bright now.
Then he was back over her, his skin sliding against hers, his mouth hot on her neck. "Tell me to stop," he growled, his hips pinning hers to the bed.
Elora arched up, her lips finding his. "Don’t you dare."
Eon groaned, his hand sliding between them again, his fingers slipping inside her. Elora cried out, her back bowing off the bed as he curled his fingers, finding that spot that made her vision whiten at the edges.
"Eon, please…"
He didn’t make her beg.
With a final, rough kiss, he shifted between her legs, his cock pressing over her pussy. Elora wrapped her legs around him, her heels digging into his back as he pushed inside.
For a second, they just breathed. Then Eon pulled back, his thrusts starting slow, deep, each one dragging a broken sound from Elora’s throat. She clung to him, her nails raking down his back as he moved, the bed creaking beneath them.
"Harder," she gasped, her teeth biting into his shoulder.
Eon snarled, his rhythm turning fast; the slap of skin filled the room as he fucked her as he desired. Elora met him stroke for stroke, her body coiling tighter, tighter after each thrust.
Then she felt something coming from inside of her. Before she reacted and told Eon to stop or do her harder, her orgasm crashed over her in a wave of heat and pleasure. Eon followed just after her with a groan, his body shuddering and trembling as he spilled inside her.
They collapsed together. Eon rolled her weak limbs onto their sides, his arms still wrapped around her, his face buried in her hair.
Elora’s heart pounded and her skin slick with sweat. She turned her head, pressing a kiss to his collarbone. "Still think I can’t kiss straight?"
Eon’s laugh was a low rumble against her skin. "I’ll take it back."
She grinned, nuzzling closer. "Good."
Outside, the wind howled against the windows. But here, in the dark, with Eon’s arms around her and with the scent of him in her lungs, the world felt distant.
Safe. For now, that was enough.
