REBORN AS A HIGH ELF SLAVE

Chapter 92: Nora’s turning point

The dark elf's ragged breathing filled the tense silence between them. Her red eyes still burned with defiance, but after staying like that for a while, there was something new there now: calculation. She wasn't just a cornered animal anymore. She was thinking now.

Eon crossed his arms, watching her with cold detachment, which he might use for examining a broken weapon. "You've got two choices," he said, his voice low but carrying the weight of the options he was about to give her. "Keep fighting until I have to put you down. Or prove you're more than just teeth and claws. That you can cooperate with us."

She bared her teeth at him. "And why would I trust you?"

"Because I'm the only one in this mansion who hasn't once considered chaining you to a wall." He gestured to her bruised hand where he had made her wear manacles. "Yet."

Her gaze flicked to the mages still hovering nervously in the background, then back to him. "But aren’t you one of them?"

Eon's lips twitched, not quite a smile. "And why would I be? I'm the one who unlocked your cell. Who carried you out of that basement. Who's giving you this chance instead of letting Alaric's men drag you back to the dungeon." He leaned in just enough to make her flinch. "I'm the one who could break every bone in your body with a thought... but still hasn't."

The dark elf's throat worked as she swallowed. For the first time, her defiance wavered. Just a fraction, though.

Behind them, one of the mages cleared his throat and was about to leave by backing away. "I should inform the Marquess about this matter."

Eon didn't turn. He just said, "The Marquess can wait." As he left the sentence from his mouth, the mage fell silent.

Eon refocused on the dark elf. "Tell me, what's your name?"

She hesitated. Then, through gritted teeth said a single word, "Nora."

"Nora." He said the name aloud. "That's a start." He straightened, rolling his shoulders back. "So, here's how this is going to work. You're going to walk with me. Nicely. Like a civilized person. Not a feral cat."

Her nostrils flared. "And if I don't?"

Eon didn't answer. He didn't need to.

Nora’s jaw clenched, but after a long moment, she gave a single, sharp nod.

The walk back to the guest chamber was tense. The mages kept their distance, eyeing Nora like she might explode at any moment. Eon walked beside her, close enough to grab her if she lunged, and far enough to give her space. His senses were hyper-aware, every shift in her breathing, every twitch of her fingers, the way her muscles coiled like springs beneath her skin almost made him use restraining spells on her.

They reached the ruined room, where Verra was waiting, arms crossed, her silver eyes flicking between Eon and Nora with open suspicion.

"It’s okay, She's with us," Eon said before Elsa could speak.

Verra's brow arched. "She destroyed half the room."

"She was imprisoned for years," Eon shot back. "You think she'd come out singing?"

Nora made a sound that might have been a laugh if it weren't so bitter.

Verra's gaze narrowed, but she didn't argue. Instead, she turned to the servants lingering in the hallway. "Get this cleaned up. And bring food. Real food, not slop."

The servants were certainly not happy about an elf ordering them around like she owned them. But they followed anyway. After all, it was their own lord Alaric’s direct order for them to heed every need of his guests.

Eon nodded in approval, then turned to Nora. "You. Sit."

Nora glared at him first, but after a beat, she lowered herself onto the edge of the overturned bed, her posture still a little rigid.

Eon also crouched in front of her, close enough that she could lash out if she wanted to.

"You’re not a prisoner anymore," Eon said, his voice low but firm. "But you’re not free yet, either."

Nora’s red eyes locked onto his, her breath coming in sharp, uneven bursts. "Free?" she scoffed, her voice rough with bitterness. "You call this free? Chained to another master’s whims?"

Eon didn’t flinch. "I call it a choice. A real one." He gestured to the twisted iron still littering the floor, the remnants of the manacles she’d bent with her bare hands. "You broke those. You fought your way out of that cell. That’s not the act of a slave. That’s the act of someone who refuses to be caged."

Nora’s lips curled, but the defiance in her eyes flickered, just for a second. "And what if I refuse you?"

"Then you walk out that door," Eon said simply. "There will be no collar. No chains. No one will stop you."

Elsa, who had been standing silently by the doorway, stepped forward. Her silver hair caught the dim torchlight, her expression unreadable. "Believe me, you won’t last a day," she said, her voice a little cold but not unkind. "The moment you step outside these walls, soldiers from other noble families will grab you as soon as they know you are an escaped dark elf. Or the Duke’s men. Or some two-bit slaver looking to make a quick coin. You’re a dark elf, Nora. That’s basically a death sentence in these lands. You must know that better than anyone."

Nora’s jaw tightened. "I’d rather take my chances than kneel to another…"

"You’d rather die?" Elsa cut in, her tone sharp. "Because that’s what’s waiting for you. A blade in the dark. Or a collar around your neck. A life worse than the one you just escaped."

Nora’s breath hitched. The silence stretched on, heavy with the weight of the truth neither of them could deny. Eon watched her, his gaze steady. He didn’t push. He didn’t plead. He let the reality of her situation sink in, let her see the walls closing in around her, walls she couldn’t break with brute strength alone.

Finally, Nora exhaled, a sound like a deflating lung. "What do you want from me?"

Eon leaned back slightly, giving her space. "Your skills. Your strength. Your loyalty, when you’re ready to give it." He nodded toward the door, where the distant sounds of the mansion’s bustle filtered through the thick wood. "We’re leaving tomorrow. Heading back to Edger County. If you come with us, you’ll fight with us. You’ll train. You’ll earn your place. But if you stay…" He let the sentence hang; the implication was clear to everyone in the room.

Nora looked down at her hands, flexing her fingers as if testing their strength. She was trying to determine if what they were saying had any truth at all. She glanced at Elsa, then at Verra once.

"Why?" she asked suddenly, her voice quieter now. "Why bother with me? You’ve got your own people. Your own wars. Why risk it for a stranger?"

Eon’s lips quirked, just slightly. "Because I’ve been where you are. Chained. Beaten brutally almost to the edge of death." His voice dropped. "I didn’t get one. I had to claw my way out alone. So, I’m not letting anyone else do that if I can help it."

Nora studied him, her gaze searching his face for lies, for tricks. But all she found was the quiet certainty of a man who had already made his choice, and was offering her the chance to make hers.

Outside, the wind howled against the mansion’s walls, a reminder of the world waiting beyond these stones. A world that would swallow her whole if she stepped into it alone.

Eon stood, brushing the dust from his knees. "Think about it. You’ve got until morning." He turned to leave, then paused, glancing back at her. "And Nora?"

She looked up, her red eyes meeting his.

"Whatever you decide," he said, his voice low, "make it count."

Then he left the room.
