Reborn as an A-Rank Guide: Trapped By The Crazy Sentinels
Chapter 34: GamesArden’s expression changed. "Don’t tell me the guide likes women?"
But there were no female sentinels in the base. Was it still early enough for him to transition?
Rain shot San a look of pure disdain. "Maybe she just has no interest in someone as extra as you."
There was a reason San and Brandon got along so well—they were both the same brand of dramatic. Deep V-necks, fishnets, low-cut tops... no one else in the entire base would wear that kind of thing. Completely indecent, brothel-chic.
Zippers were never pulled all the way up. Chest had to be on display.
This was a base full of grown men. Who exactly were they dressing so provocatively for every single day?
"You don’t understand shit. This is called style."
A man who isn’t a little flashy won’t win a woman’s heart.
Just then the game-room door swung open from outside. Brandon walked in carrying Bunny—she had gotten too bored and insisted he bring her to play.
Arden threw San a pointed look. "See? You two are walking the same path, and this dog is already miles ahead."
San’s gaze landed on Bunny in Brandon’s arms. His fire-gold eyes blinked once, and his expression turned strangely complicated.
"No way..."
"She likes minors?!"
Bunny frowned. What an enormous pot of blame to dump on someone!
Brandon briefly explained how to use the game crystal chip and how to establish or cut the neural link. Bunny sat in the floating chair and listened carefully.
She had loved games since she was little—terrible at them but hopelessly addicted. She had never experienced how far the technology of this era had advanced.
On the massive holographic display, she swiped through icons, searching for something interesting, until she selected a 3D role-playing game that required nine players linked at the same time.
To keep her company, Brandon had no choice but to call everyone over.
Aside from Cyrus and Xander—the two "old men"—the rest of the sentinels connected their brainwaves one after another.
The nine players were divided into three roles: four protectors, four infiltrators, and one unarmed hostage.
The protectors needed to reach the location where the hostage was being held, eliminate every infiltrator, and successfully rescue the hostage to win.
The infiltrators only needed to eliminate all the protectors.
Bunny was excited. This was her first time experiencing such a vivid, fully immersive game environment.
When she opened her eyes, she was already standing on a military base helipad. Strong wind howled; wild grass flattened against the ground. The hands she raised were already wearing tactical gloves.
An NPC officer was briefing them on the mission objectives and location:
"The hostage is being held in an abandoned brick factory in the western district. I will have a helicopter transport you to the destination. Ensure the hostage’s safety and eliminate every enemy!"
Bunny glanced left and right. Her teammates were Illai, Orion, and Rain.
The enemy team: Astin, San, Tyr, and Arden.
The hostage was Brandon.
Players on the same side could communicate directly.
The game began. Bunny and her team boarded without trouble. Accompanied by the roar of the rotors, the scenery below shrank into tiny black dots.
"Miss Guide, every sensation in here will be synchronized directly to your neural center. Be ready for that."
Illai and Rain were checking their weapons, while Orion carefully helped her into a bulletproof vest and other protective gear.
Ten minutes later, they parachuted into dense forest five hundred meters outside the brick factory.
Bunny had zero parachuting experience. Predictably, she ended up tangled in a tree.
After her teammates finally rescued her, she thanked them awkwardly. "Thanks, Orion."
Illai’s voice was full of quiet grievance. "Miss Bunny... you mixed me up with my brother again."
Oops.
Everyone moved slowly through the tall grass in ghillie suits, closing in on the target. Rain found a high vantage point and set up his sniper rifle.
Under a third-floor window of the brick factory, San was also lining up a shot.
In one of the basements, Brandon lay tightly bound, with Astin’s boot planted firmly on him.
He was starting to get annoyed. "Even if I’m the hostage, do you really need to keep stepping on me the whole time?"
Astin flashed him a wicked grin. "Hostage is hostage. How can it count if there’s no torment?"
"Come on—string him up."
Brandon was hauled upside-down by steel cables and left swinging from the ceiling beam like a pendulum. He exploded into curses.
"Astin, you bastard—just wait till I get out of here. I’ll beat the shit out of you."
Settling personal scores right here in the game!
Astin ignored him completely. He drove the butt of his rifle hard into Brandon’s stomach, then stuffed a rag into his mouth because he was being too loud.
Brandon: "You *#%&@... mmph—"
Astin’s laugh was pure villainy. "Scream. Why’d you stop?"
He played the role of pure evil so thoroughly and vividly that even Arden was stunned.
"Astin... what the hell did you use to do?"
System: Player 4 performance score +1000
System: Hostage performance score +500
Player 4 was Astin.
Tyr was guarding the main entrance. Suddenly, a flash of reflected light blinked from the distant grass. San, still behind his scope, let out a soft scoff.
"Still using such low-level tricks."
He stayed perfectly still, fully aware the reflection was only a bait meant to force him into revealing his position.
So he ordered Tyr at the door to act as bait instead—then he could lock onto the enemy’s head with precision.
Tyr opened fire with several bursts. Just as San eagerly searched through his scope for any sign of the protectors, a perfectly aimed grenade launcher shell exploded right on his position.
System: Player 3 has been eliminated. Performance score: 0.
System: Player 6 successfully eliminated one infiltrator. Performance score +2000.
San: "Fuck—how did they know I was here?"
Bunny: "Handsome, your red hair is way too eye-catching."
Arden: "Talent."
Astin: "Pure trash *."
System: Harsh language detected from Player 4. Forced mute applied.
Both sides’ positions were now exposed. Bunny and Orion had no choice but to trade heavy fire with Tyr and Arden.
Over the headset Illai called out coordinates to Rain. "Nine o’clock, behind the sandbags."
Rain squeezed the trigger. A single sniper round took Arden out of the game, but Illai was badly wounded by Tyr and continued to bleed.
After settling the injured Illai in a safer outer position, Bunny’s group pushed into the brick factory. Using their numbers advantage they captured Tyr alive and forced him to reveal the hostage’s location.
Tyr led the three of them down to that basement. In the dim light they could only make out the hostage hanging upside-down, unconscious.
The moment they cut him down, Bunny impatiently yanked off the black hood—and every drop of blood in her body froze.
Why was it him?!
Astin opened his eyes and drawled, clearly amused, "All’s fair in war, Guide."
With lightning speed he locked an arm around her throat and pressed the muzzle of his gun against her forehead, threatening the others.
"Put the guns down nice and slow, or I blow her head off."
Even though this was a virtual world, pain still transmitted with perfect realism.
Orion and Illai exchanged a glance, then reluctantly lowered their weapons. Tyr quickly restrained them both.
Meanwhile, the real Brandon—completely forgotten in the corner—could only stare in silent disbelief.
