Reborn as an A-Rank Guide: Trapped By The Crazy Sentinels
Chapter 43: Culinary disastersThat kind of "handling" was definitely not the kind Bunny had been thinking of.
Her face immediately turned red. These sentinels really had absolutely no filter.
She pushed her chair back.
"I’m full. You guys take your time."
Then she hurried away beneath several heated gazes. If she stayed any longer, she felt like their eyes were going to strip her bare.
Once Bunny had disappeared, Xander gave San a warning look.
"San, watch your mouth."
Instead of backing down, San became even more blatant. "Vice Captain, you’re a man too. Don’t tell me you don’t want it."
Who had been the one to transform into a mermaid and lure the Guide to the swimming pool?
Unless they were eunuchs, these young men—who had been suppressing their instincts for so long—would obviously have thoughts about their Guide.
The others remained silent, simply enjoying the spectacle.
Xander had been stationed at the base for years, yet the number of times he had willingly transformed his lower body into a mermaid’s tail could be counted on one hand.
Perhaps because of his old psychological scars, he was actually quite resistant to displaying that form.
His teammates had barely seen him transform before.
Yet the moment Bunny arrived, he’d practically rushed to show off.
Everyone recognized the behavior for what it was. If one peacock wanted to spread his feathers, why stop him? Let them all compete. They could see which "male peacock" could put on the most dazzling display.
Xander wasn’t about to be outdone. His response remained perfectly calm.
"Wanting something is one thing. Actually having it is another."
Bunny’s shooting and combat training would probably take quite some time. In the meantime, she also needed to learn how to operate the drones.
More than a hundred defensive outposts of various sizes were scattered throughout 616.
The energy stations formed a triangular arrangement across the region, while more than a thousand drones belonged to the sentry tower.
These sophisticated autonomous drones followed preset patrol routes, pursuing and eliminating any alien creatures they detected.
However, their routes could also be manually altered.
Under special circumstances, operators could dispatch additional drones, redirect patrols, track targets, coordinate encirclements, and even manually open fire.
Guides spent most of their time inside the base, which made regular inspections of drone damage and remote coordination during sentinel operations extremely important.
Sunny hopped onto the enormous holographic control console spanning the wall beside the floor-to-ceiling windows and patiently explained the system’s command hierarchy and various interfaces.
It was unusually cloudy today.
There wasn’t a trace of sunlight outside.
"Miss Bunny, Level One commands include automatic target locking and firing. Level Two commands allow you to alter patrol routes. Level Three is the self-destruct protocol, and you’ll need iris verification before you can activate it."
"The drones automatically return to charging stations at scheduled intervals. Every unit has its own identification number and tracking signal. When one is damaged by an alien creature, its coordinates are transmitted immediately. See those red dots flashing on the map?"
Bunny focused on the holographic map.
Two red markers were blinking inside a heavily irradiated zone, only about a kilometer in a straight line from the nearest defensive post.
Their identification numbers were X-007 and X-996.
Both had been damaged less than five minutes ago.
"Miss Bunny, try dispatching the nearest drone to investigate."
Following Sunny’s instructions, Bunny touched the blue interface and adjusted the nearest patrol drone’s route so that it intersected with the transmitted coordinates.
The drone’s live feed appeared almost immediately.
The area had just been battered by a sandstorm, leaving visibility extremely poor.
Bunny rotated the camera.
Beside the wreckage of X-007, she spotted what appeared to be a severed alien limb.
After dismantling X-007’s energy core, she began examining the residual data.
The drone had encountered two juvenile alien creatures traveling together.
Juvenile specimens couldn’t reproduce themselves. They normally searched for a mature female specimen for reproduction and then remained nearby while the eggs developed.
The pair had attacked X-007 from both sides, destroyed it, and fled east after sustaining serious injuries.
Bunny immediately made a decision.
Before they could get far, she manually redirected the drone and sent it speeding eastward after them, activating its high-altitude infrared radar.
It didn’t take long to locate them in a low-lying section of a valley.
Sunny immediately instructed: "Fire."
Bunny issued the attack command.
Several laser cannons streaked downward like a curtain of light, raining fire upon the fleeing creatures.
Enraged, they turned around and charged the drone.
Bunny immediately switched the remote-fire configuration to a close-range shotgun mode.
The alien creatures were blasted into bloody fragments.
After retrieving the energy cores from X-007 and X-996, Bunny uploaded the damage reports to the sentry tower’s records.
The data would automatically synchronize with Central, after which a replacement drone could be activated from the reserve stockpile.
Sunny praised her at exactly the right moment.
"Miss Bunny, you did an amazing job~"
"That concludes today’s lesson! Tomorrow we’ll learn something new!"
Bunny rose from the hovering chair and stretched.
Then she walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and gazed toward the dim horizon.
A few minutes later, an aircraft blinking with red lights appeared in the distance, gradually descending from the sky.
They were back.
Bunny immediately hurried to the kitchen to check on the meat she’d been stewing.
She was simply too bored.
Every day consisted of training, work, entertainment, and sleep.
There wasn’t much else for her to do.
After all, her current combat ability still wasn’t sufficient for her to leave the sentry tower.
So whenever she had too much free time, she experimented with cooking.
For someone as lazy as Bunny, this was a rare burst of diligence.
She’d been living the kind of life where food and everything else were simply handed to her, so this was actually her first time cooking for other people.
When the sentinels returned, they found that their Guide had already enthusiastically set the table.
"Come on, come on. Sit down, everyone."
Bunny eagerly ushered them into their seats, clearly excited to show off her culinary skills.
"I made everything myself. Try it and tell me what you think!"
The sentinels exchanged suspicious glances.
Had the sun risen in the west?
Were they actually getting to eat a sentinel meal prepared personally by their Guide?
Illai looked genuinely flattered.
"Bunny, you made all of this?"
Bunny proudly nodded.
He picked up a spoonful of chickpeas and tasted it. The bitter flavor instantly numbed his tongue.
God only knew what she’d put in it. Perhaps she’d simply stewed it for far too long.
Bunny leaned closer, her eyes full of expectation.
"Well? How is it?"
Not wanting to ruin her excitement, Illai forced himself to swallow and smiled.
"It’s delicious. You cooked it really well."
Arden believed him.
He picked up a piece of chicken breast with some purple cabbage and stuffed it into his mouth.
There was far too much dressing, and the sharp black pepper hit the back of his throat at the same time.
"Ugh—"
He was just about to spit it out when Xander viciously pinched the flesh of his thigh.
Arden’s face turned bright red—not from embarrassment, but from the heat and salt overwhelming his senses.
He grabbed the glass of water and started gulping it down.
Bunny’s expression changed.
"Arden, what’s wrong?"
Arden finally managed to finish the entire glass.
He was just about to admit that the food was painfully salty and spicy when Xander gave him a hard slap on the back and answered for him.
"It was just too delicious. He got a little overwhelmed."
Only then did Bunny relax.
"I thought you were about to throw up! You scared me."
Brandon immediately piled on.
"You were so moved by how delicious it was that you nearly cried, right, Arden?"
Arden caught Xander’s warning stare and reluctantly nodded.
"Right."
His voice, however, sounded utterly lifeless.
Bunny brightened.
"In that case, nobody should waste food. Finish everything."
The sentinels fell collectively silent.
...
What kind of merciless demon is this Guide?
Rain suddenly spoke up. "Miss Bunny, I just remembered that we forgot to close the protective canopy over the landing pad when we came back. Could you go and shut it for us?"
They had been fighting all day. Asking her to handle something this minor didn’t seem unreasonable.
Bunny readily agreed. "Sure."
The moment the sentinels watched her disappear completely from sight, they immediately began shoveling the "culinary disasters" into the waste-disposal robot.
The only things they actually ate were the boiled corn and cheese.
There was no helping it.
Bunny was a beginner, so failing to judge the proper amount of seasoning in sentinel food was perfectly understandable.
Too much salt could potentially be dangerous for sentinels.
Better to leave this kind of cooking to the household robot.
She was their Guide, after all.
She ought to be living the sort of pampered life where everything was placed directly into her hands.
Xander finally brought the discussion back to business.
"All the power-generation units at the energy stations are functioning normally. However, Station Three has sent out a maintenance alert."
"When Arden and I went on patrol, we discovered that ten high-voltage storage units were missing from the energy-storage section."
