The academy had transformed into a hive of exhausted, purposeful activity by the time Julian’s stretcher arrived, healers and staff moving with the particular urgency of people finally allowed to breathe after hours of unrelenting crisis. The zombies were gone. The horde had retreated with the entity, leaving behind smoking ruins and shattered barricades but, mercifully, a population still largely intact.

Reid never left Julian’s side through the entire journey back, walking close beside the stretcher with one hand resting protective against its edge, exhaustion and lingering disbelief warring plainly across his scarred features.

"his vitals are stable," the lead healer reported once they reached the medical wing, checking Julian’s pulse with careful, practiced hands, "but he’s not responding to any stimulus. not pain, not sound, nothing."

"what does that mean," Jayden demanded, hovering close, gold light long since faded from his exhausted hands.

The healer’s expression tightened with careful, professional concern. "his body’s suffered catastrophic strain," she said slowly. "reserves depleted well past any safe threshold, on top of whatever ability he used to disguise himself, on top of whatever that illusion cost him during the confrontation. his mind and body have essentially shut down to protect themselves from further damage. it’s a coma. we don’t know yet how long it will last, or what condition he’ll be in when — if — he wakes."

The words landed heavy across the small, exhausted group gathered around the bed, relief from finding him alive tangling hard and painful with fresh, unbearable uncertainty.

"but he will wake," Logan said, voice tight, refusing to accept anything less than certainty.

"we hope so," the healer said carefully. "his body’s fighting to heal itself. that’s a good sign. but I won’t lie to you and promise a timeline we don’t actually have."

Reid remained standing at Julian’s bedside long after the healers finished their initial assessment, staring down at Julian’s still, pale features, exhaustion and unbearable relief and fresh, aching fear all tangled together in his chest.

"weeks," he murmured, mostly to himself. "weeks of searching, of losing people, of not knowing if he was even still alive. and now he’s finally here, and I still can’t—"

He didn’t finish the thought, jaw tightening hard, and Jayden’s hand landed gentle on his shoulder, steady and understanding.

"he’s safe," Jayden said quietly. "whatever else happens, whatever this coma means — he’s safe now. that has to count for something."

---

Word reached the Emperor within the hour, a messenger arriving breathless at the temporary command post he’d established near the palace grounds, still coordinating the aftermath of the city-wide crisis.

"Your Majesty," the messenger gasped, "the hooded stranger from the eastern line — confirmed identity. it’s Guide Valerian. they found him. he’s alive."

The Emperor went utterly still, every ounce of exhausted composure he’d maintained through the entire catastrophic day cracking open at once.

"say that again," he said, voice barely above a whisper.

"Julian Valerian," the messenger confirmed. "confirmed by Commander Calloway, Prince Jayden, and Sentinel Logan directly. he’s been taken to the academy’s medical wing."

The Emperor didn’t wait for further details. He was moving before the messenger finished speaking, abandoning the command post entirely, ignoring the startled protests of his own guard as he crossed the war-torn capital at a pace that bordered on reckless, months of careful, restrained composure finally, fully abandoned in favor of raw, desperate urgency.

He arrived at the academy’s medical wing breathless, robes torn and stained from the day’s fighting, and found Reid, Jayden, and Logan gathered close around a bed where Julian lay still and pale, breathing steady but unresponsive.

The Emperor’s steps slowed as he approached, something raw and fragile crossing his exhausted features as he finally, properly saw the man he’d spent weeks searching for, the man he’d promised, alone in an empty war room, that he would find no matter what it cost.

"is he—" the Emperor started, voice catching.

"alive," Reid confirmed quietly. "but in a coma. the healers don’t know when he’ll wake."

The Emperor crossed the remaining distance slowly, sinking into the chair beside Julian’s bed without waiting for permission, staring down at his still, exhausted face with something desperate and unguarded finally breaking fully through his composed exterior.

"we found him," the Emperor said quietly, almost disbelieving, reaching out to brush a strand of hair back from Julian’s forehead with careful, trembling fingers. "after everything. after all of it. we actually found him."

"he saved this entire capital," Jayden said quietly. "fought alone for hours before anyone even recognized him. and then faced that entity directly, and survived it."

The Emperor’s jaw tightened, something fierce and protective settling behind his exhausted eyes. "the entity," he said slowly. "the one directing the horde."

"it appeared personally," Reid confirmed. "spoke to him directly. tested him somehow — some kind of illusion, from what little Julian managed to say before he lost consciousness. it said this was only the beginning. that it would return."

The Emperor absorbed that with grim, focused attention, exhaustion and fresh, urgent dread tangling together behind his composed exterior. "then whatever rest he needs," he said finally, voice hard with renewed resolve, "he gets it. properly, this time. no further searches, no further crises demanding his immediate attention. he’s earned every single hour of peace we can possibly give him before that thing decides to return."

Nobody argued. The small, exhausted group settled into quiet, careful vigil around Julian’s bed, each of them carrying their own private grief and relief and fear in equal measure, watching over the still, unresponsive form of the man who’d spent weeks fighting battles none of them had even known about, only to end this one unconscious and unreachable in the very place he’d once called home.

The Emperor remained longest of all, staying well past the point when the others eventually, reluctantly retreated to attend to the capital’s continued recovery, sitting quiet and still beside Julian’s bed long into the night, one hand resting gentle against Julian’s own, exhaustion finally catching up with him in the stillness of the medical wing’s dim, quiet light.

"you don’t have to fight alone anymore," the Emperor murmured, voice barely audible even in the room’s silence. "whatever comes next, whatever that thing wants from you — you have all of us now. properly, this time. just come back to us."

Julian didn’t stir, breathing slow and steady beneath the weight of exhaustion too vast for any ordinary rest to properly heal, and the Emperor remained beside him regardless, keeping vigil through the long, quiet hours, refusing to leave the one person he’d promised himself, weeks ago in an empty war room, that he would never lose again.
