The swarm closed in from every direction at once, dozens of gray shapes shuffling forward in perfect, eerie unison, like something behind that massive core was pulling every string at the exact same time.

’they’re coordinating’ Julian thought, cold sweat breaking across his back. ’they never coordinate like this. not this fast, not this clean.’

[Confirmed. Core creature is directing swarm behavior. All smaller Aberrations are responding to a single guiding signal.]

’so if we take out the core...’

[The swarm should lose coordination. This remains the most viable strategy.]

Reid was already shouting orders, voice sharp and clipped, cutting through the rising panic on the field. "wedge formation, now! nobody breaks the line, nobody goes solo, we hold until I say otherwise..."

But the swarm wasn’t giving them time to hold anything. They came fast, faster than the earlier wave, gray hands reaching, mouths open, and the Sentinels closest to the front barely got their weapons up in time to meet the first crash of bodies..

Julian’s heart was hammering so hard he could feel it in his throat, but underneath the fear, that same old cold clarity was rising up too, the same thing that used to click into place right when everything on the wall went to absolute hell. He’d been here before. Different world, same nightmare, and he knew exactly what happened to people who panicked in moments like this. They died. Fast.

"Reid!" Julian shouted over the noise. "the ones on the flanks, they’re slower, they’re testing the formation before the real push, hold the center tight and let them come to you, don’t chase them..."

Reid didn’t question it this time, just relayed the order down the line immediately, and Julian watched the wedge tighten up, holding steady instead of scattering out to meet every individual threat. It helped. Not enough, not nearly enough against this many, but it helped.

The core creature hadn’t moved from where it stood, watching all of it unfold with something horribly patient in its ruined eyes, still fixed on Julian like nothing else on that entire battlefield mattered.

"you still haven’t answered me," it said, voice dragging out low over the chaos. "do you remember, wall-keeper. do you remember what you promised me, the night everything fell apart."

Julian’s jaw locked tight. He remembered. He remembered every single second of that night, remembered Hale’s voice ordering him to run, remembered the sound the wall made when it finally gave out, remembered turning back one last time and seeing nothing left to save.

"I remember," Julian said, voice rough. "I remember you told me to run. I remember I did."

"and I remember dying alone," Hale’s twisted voice ground out, something raw underneath all that wrongness, something that almost sounded human for one horrible second. "while you lived."

Julian’s chest cracked open at that, old guilt he thought he’d buried three years and one whole world deep clawing its way straight back up to the surface, and for one dangerous second he forgot completely about the swarm closing in around him, forgot about Reid shouting formation orders, forgot about everything except the man who once taught him how to survive the worst night of his life, now standing in front of him wearing a monster’s skin.

[Host. Emotional distraction detected. This is exactly the vulnerability this creature is exploiting.]

’I know’

[Then host must disengage, immediately.]

’I know that too..’

But before Julian could pull himself back together, three of the smaller Aberrations broke off from the main swarm entirely, ignoring the Sentinels around them completely, and came sprinting straight toward him with a speed that shouldn’t have belonged to anything that slow-moving a minute ago.

Jayden’s voice tore across the field, desperate and too far away to make it in time.

"JULIAN, BEHIND YOU..."
