Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 41: The Second Vent"I’m not spending another night in this room," Julian said, voice flat and hard, pacing the small space with restless, furious energy. "I don’t care what it takes. we’re finding a way out today."
"agreed," the fox said, ears pinned back with matching urgency. "but we need to be smart about this. the first vent led straight into the horde pen. if there’s a second route, we don’t actually know where it lets out. it could be worse."
"worse than a room where he thinks he can just..." Julian cut himself off, jaw tight, shoving the memory down hard before it could climb back up his throat. "I’ll take the risk. staying here isn’t an option anymore."
The fox studied him a moment, something gentler than usual in its gaze, before nodding once. "then let’s find it."
They worked through the paneling on the opposite wall this time, the one Julian hadn’t tried yet, prying at seams in the low light while every distant footstep outside sent his pulse spiking. It took longer than the first vent had, his fingers raw and aching by the time the panel finally gave, but it gave.
"okay," Julian breathed, staring into the dark passage beyond. "okay. this is it."
"we don’t know where it leads," the fox reminded him, though there was no real argument left in its voice, just caution laid over the same desperate hope Julian felt.
"then let’s find out," Julian said, and pushed himself through.

Xavier stood in his private chamber that same evening, staring at nothing in particular, the memory of Julian’s fist connecting with his jaw sitting oddly pleasant in his mind rather than shameful.
He didn’t regret it. Regret assumed a mistake, and he didn’t consider any of it a mistake at all... simply a beginning, a first crack in the version of Julian that still believed he had any real say in how this ended.
"he’ll understand eventually," Xavier murmured to the empty room, almost fond. "they always do. resistance is just the shape love takes before it learns better."
He didn’t rush back to check on him. Let Julian sit with what happened a while longer. Let the fear and fury simmer down into something quieter, more pliable. Patience had gotten him this far already, and he saw no reason to abandon it now, even with something new and impatient stirring restless in his chest.
’soon,’ he thought, settling into his chair, unbothered. ’let him run himself ragged looking for a way out. it’ll only make the moment he stops looking that much sweeter.’

Back at the academy, Reid stood with the Emperor in a quiet corner of the war room, voices low, the map table between them covered in markers that still hadn’t moved in any useful direction.
"we don’t move yet," the Emperor said, jaw tight. "if that thing suspects we’re onto it, whoever’s controlling it may simply discard it and vanish entirely, and we’ll lose whatever thread we still have."
"so we wait," Reid said, clearly unhappy with the word even as he said it.
"we watch," the Emperor corrected. "closely. every inconsistency, every flinch, every moment it doesn’t react the way he would have. we build the case quietly, and when we’re certain, we act all at once. no warning."
Reid’s jaw tightened, but he nodded. "and if it does something dangerous before we’re ready?"
The Emperor didn’t answer that right away, something cold and grim settling behind his eyes instead.
"then we won’t have a choice anymore," he said finally. "we’ll have to move before we’re certain, and hope we’re not wrong."
Reid glanced toward the door, toward the wing where the fake Julian currently rested, unease sitting heavy and constant in his chest. "I don’t like leaving him... it... whatever it is, unwatched for even a moment."
"then don’t," the Emperor said simply. "assign someone discreet. someone who won’t spook it into acting early."
"I’ll do it myself," Reid said.
The Emperor studied him a moment, something unreadable flickering behind his composed expression, before he nodded once. "good. I’d rather it be you than anyone else."

The second vent twisted differently than the first, sloping upward instead of down, the air growing colder and thinner the further Julian crawled, the fox’s faint golden glow the only light guiding him through the cramped stone passage. His shoulders scraped against rough stone with every push forward, muscles burning from the awkward crawl, but he didn’t slow, didn’t let himself think too hard about what waited on the other side.
"almost there," the fox whispered after what felt like an hour of crawling. "I can feel open air ahead."
Julian pushed forward, hope flickering fragile and stubborn in his chest despite everything the day had already put him through, despite the ache still sitting deep in his chest from Xavier’s hands on his shoulders, from a violation he hadn’t asked for and couldn’t yet fully process. He shoved all of it down, focused on the crawl, on the cold air growing sharper, on the faint gray light finally visible ahead.
The passage narrowed one final time, forcing him to squeeze through on his stomach, and then, finally, it opened.
Julian dropped through the gap and landed hard on solid ground, pain jolting up through his knees, and pushed himself upright fast, already scanning for exits, for guards, for anything that might tell him which direction meant freedom.
And froze. The space stretching out before him wasn’t a courtyard, or a corridor, or anything close to what he’d expected. Rows upon rows of glass containment chambers filled the massive chamber as far as he could see in the dim, pale light, each one holding a still, silent figure suspended in glowing liquid, faces slack, eyes closed, some familiar in ways that made his stomach lurch violently.
Faces that looked like ordinary people. Faces that looked like students, still dressed in half-formed academy uniforms as if they’d been taken mid-day, mid-life, and simply preserved exactly as they’d been caught. And in more than one horrifying case, faces that looked disturbingly, impossibly similar to his own... different ages, different builds, but unmistakably built from some version of him, like Xavier had been experimenting with copies long before the one currently wearing his face at the academy had ever been finished.
"what the hell is this," Julian breathed, eyes widening, legs threatening to give out beneath him, the fox going utterly silent and rigid on his shoulder, every hair on its small body standing on end.
