The fake Julian’s face crumpled the moment Reid’s words landed, tears welling up fast and convincing, voice breaking on the first attempt to speak. "you must have seen wrong," it said, pushing itself up unsteadily, swaying hard enough that Reid’s hands shot out on instinct to catch him again. "I don’t... Reid, please, I don’t know what you saw, but I promise I’m not..."

It stumbled, knees buckling, and Reid caught it fully this time, arms wrapping tight around trembling shoulders that shook with what looked, convincingly, like genuine, overwhelming distress.

"ever since I woke up out there," the fake Julian said, voice cracking, muffled against Reid’s chest, "among the trees, alone, not remembering anything... I keep seeing things. hearing things. I don’t know what’s real anymore, and everyone keeps looking at me like I’m broken, and I don’t..." a shuddering breath, "I think I’m losing my mind, Reid. I really do."

Reid’s arms tightened instinctively, the suspicion that had been ironclad a minute ago cracking hard under the weight of raw, familiar guilt. He’d seen something wrong in those eyes, he was certain of it, some flash of hollow gray that had made his blood run cold, but now, holding what felt exactly like Julian falling apart in his arms, doubt crept in fast and merciless, chipping away at certainty he’d been so sure of only seconds before.

’maybe just I imagined it,’ Reid thought, even as some old, stubborn instinct in the back of his mind refused to fully let go of what he’d seen. ’maybe exhaustion’s finally catching up with me too. four days of searching, no sleep, staring at his face wondering if it’s really him... of course my mind’s starting to play tricks.’

"it’s my fault," the fake Julian continued, voice smaller now, more broken, tears slipping freely down its cheeks in a display so convincingly human that Reid’s chest ached just watching it. "if I hadn’t chased after that man in the first place, none of this would have happened. you wouldn’t have had to search for four days. you wouldn’t have had to stand out at that gate every single night hoping I’d come back. I wouldn’t be like this. everyone wouldn’t be looking at me like I’m some fragile thing about to shatter."

"stop," Reid said, voice rough, pulling back just enough to look at him properly, guilt and tenderness warring hard against the cold certainty he’d felt only minutes before. "none of this is your fault. you hear me? none of it."

"I’m sorry," the fake Julian whispered, lashes wet, gaze lowered like it couldn’t quite bring itself to meet Reid’s eyes.

"you don’t have anything to apologize for," Reid said, and knelt properly now, taking both of Julian’s hands in his, voice low and fierce. "whatever happens, whatever this is, I’m not going anywhere. I should have said that from the start instead of interrogating you like a suspect the second you got back. I’m sorry. that wasn’t fair to you."

The fake Julian’s expression, hidden carefully behind lowered lashes, held nothing at all resembling the fear or grief painted so convincingly across its borrowed face. Underneath the tears, underneath the trembling, something far colder and far more patient watched Reid’s guilt take root and settle, cataloguing the moment with quiet, clinical satisfaction.

*good,* Xavier’s will pulsed quiet and pleased through the connection, distant but attentive, watching everything unfold through eyes that weren’t quite his own. *very good. hold that expression a moment longer. let him believe he imagined the rest. guilt is so much easier to work with than suspicion.*

The creature let itself lean into Reid’s hold a moment longer, soaking in the comfort being offered with the same detached, patient calculation it applied to everything else, filing away exactly how easily doubt could be manufactured from nothing more than a few well-timed tears.

"stay with me," it murmured, voice small. "just for tonight. I don’t want to be alone."

Reid’s jaw tightened, something soft and helpless crossing his face despite every professional instinct screaming at him that this was exactly the kind of request he should be more careful about right now, not less. But guilt won out, the way it so often did with people who cared too much to protect themselves properly. "okay," Reid said quietly. "I’ll stay."

Julian sat curled against the cold stone wall of the dead-end chamber, staring blankly at the rows of silent glass chambers, the fury that had carried him this far finally burning itself out into something heavier and far more dangerous. His hands had stopped shaking with adrenaline sometime in the last hour, replaced instead by a deep, bone-tired stillness that scared him more than the fear ever had.

’maybe this was stupid,’ he thought, exhaustion pressing down hard on every limb. ’maybe I should just stop. stop fighting. stop trying. what’s the point of another failed escape, another dead end, another trap dressed up as hope. he wins either way, doesn’t he. eventually. that’s what he keeps telling me.’

The fox pressed close against him, quiet, sensing the shift in his mood without needing to be told, small warm body tucked tight beneath Julian’s arm like it could physically hold him together if the words wouldn’t.

’Reid,’ Julian thought slowly, picturing his face, steady and scarred and always so careful with him even when he didn’t deserve it. ’Jayden. the Emperor. they’ve probably been looking this whole time. they have to be. unless...’

His chest tightened, cold and ugly. ’unless they’ve already given up. unless four days turned into a week, turned into nothing, turned into everyone just moving on because what else can they do. I’m not exactly easy to find. I wasn’t even supposed to be here in the first place, in this body, in this world. maybe the universe already made its peace with losing track of me once. maybe it won’t mind doing it twice.’

He let his head fall back against the stone, staring up at nothing, some old, exhausted bitterness rising up through the fear, sharper now than the grief had been a moment ago.

’why am I even just a Guide,’ he thought, the unfairness of it burning hot even through the numbness settling over him. ’I fought zombies bare-handed for three years. I held a wall by myself, night after night, while grown men twice my size fell apart around me. and here, in a world with actual magic, actual power, actual Sentinels who can throw fire and lightning like it’s nothing, I get handed healing and a couple of party tricks, and I’m supposed to survive an actual monster with that. I should have gotten something that could actually fight back properly. something with teeth. something that could level this whole place if I needed it to, instead of scraping by on borrowed strength and desperate improvisation every single time.’

[Host. This unit registers a significant decline in morale.]

’yeah. So.’

[This unit does not have a solution to offer that would meaningfully improve the current situation. This unit is sorry.]

Julian let out a long, hollow breath, closing his eyes, the fox’s small, warm weight the only thing anchoring him to anything at all in that moment. The silence of the chamber pressed in thick around him, broken only by the faint, distant hum of whatever mechanism kept the glass containers glowing pale and steady in the dark.

’what if nobody comes,’ he thought, and hated himself a little for even letting the thought fully form, hated how much weight it carried once it existed outside the safety of pure, blind hope. ’what if this is just it. what if I survived one apocalypse just to disappear quietly into somebody’s private collection in a completely different one, and nobody ever even finds out what happened to me. what if I end up in one of these chambers too, eventually, just another still, silent face nobody remembers to look for.’

The fox shifted closer, small voice quiet in the heavy silence. "someone will come," it said. "I believe that."

"you have to say that," Julian murmured, voice rough. "you’re literally attached to me. what else would you say."

"maybe," the fox admitted, tails curling protectively tighter around itself. "but I still believe it. I’ve watched you refuse to die more times than I can count since we’ve known each other, host. you held a wall by yourself for three years because you refused to let it fall. you’re not the kind of person people simply stop looking for."

Julian didn’t answer right away, something in his chest aching too much to trust his own voice just yet. He thought about Reid’s steady hands, about Jayden’s reckless, stubborn loyalty, about the exhausted, desperate hope in Logan’s eyes the last time he’d woken up in a hallway with someone catching him before he hit the ground.

’they wouldn’t just stop,’ he told himself, quiet and uncertain, clinging to it because the alternative was too heavy to carry right now. ’they wouldn’t.’

But sitting alone in the dark, surrounded by rows of faces that had probably once believed the exact same thing, Julian couldn’t quite make the thought feel as solid as he needed it to be.

"what if they can’t find me," he said finally, voice barely above a whisper. "what if this place really is as hidden as it feels. what if I’m just... gone, as far as they’re concerned. what happens then."

The fox didn’t answer immediately, and the silence stretched long enough that Julian almost regretted asking at all.

"then we find another way," the fox said finally, voice steady despite everything. "we don’t wait for rescue forever, host. we’ve survived this long on our own. we’ll keep surviving until either they find us, or we find our own way out. those aren’t mutually exclusive."

Julian let out a shaky breath, something in his chest loosening just slightly at the quiet, stubborn certainty in the fox’s voice, even if it didn’t fully chase away the cold, creeping dread still sitting heavy in his stomach.

"okay," he murmured, closing his eyes again, exhaustion finally starting to drag at him harder than fear could fight off. "Alright. we keep going."

He didn’t know, sitting there in the dark surrounded by silent glass and stolen faces, whether that was still true or just something he needed to believe long enough to survive the night. But it was all he had left, and for now, it would have to be enough.
