Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 47: RegretThe creature lunged before Reid could react, gray patches spreading fast up its neck now, eyes gone fully hollow, all trace of Julian’s face crumbling away into something twisted and wrong beneath the failing glamour.
Reid barely got his blade up in time, steel meeting claws that hadn’t been there a second ago, the force of the impact driving him back a full step, boots skidding against stone.
"guards! Guards!" Reid bellowed, voice tearing across the corridor as the creature shrieked, a sound nothing human should ever be able to make, the last fragments of its disguise sloughing away entirely to reveal gray, rotting skin and a mouth stretched too wide, too many teeth crowded behind lips that no longer bothered pretending to be human. "INTRUDER! sound the alarm, NOW..."
The alarm tore through the academy seconds later, sharp and screaming, and the creature, cornered and unraveling fast, threw its head back and let out a roar that carried far beyond the walls, a desperate, instinctive cry for reinforcement, echoing out across the grounds and beyond, calling for anything of its kind within range to come.
Sentinels poured into the corridor within moments, weapons drawn, faces caught between horror and disbelief at the sight of something wearing the last shreds of Julian’s face collapsing into monstrous ruin right in front of them.
"what he’ll IS that thing," someone shouted, voice cracking with horror.
"it’s not Julian, that thing was never Julian," Reid snarled, driving his blade forward again, forcing the creature back against the wall, sweat beading at his temple despite the cold stone corridor. "Now. somebody should go get the Emperor. RIGHT NOW."
The creature thrashed, claws raking wild against the wall, gray flesh sloughing further with every passing second now that whatever fragile control Xavier had maintained over it had all but collapsed entirely. It wasn’t fighting with intelligence anymore, just pure, cornered instinct, and Reid pressed the advantage hard, driving it back step by step until it had nowhere left to retreat.
Footsteps thundered down the corridor, and Jayden burst through the gathering crowd, face draining white at the sight unfolding in front of him. "that’s... that’s..."
"not him," Reid said again, grim and final, blade never wavering. "confirmed. whatever it is, it’s been wearing his face this entire time."
The creature let out one final, gurgling shriek, and Reid ended it clean, the corrupted body collapsing into gray, lifeless stillness on the corridor floor, the last echo of its call still fading somewhere out beyond the academy walls.

Miles away, in the quiet dark of the old couple’s home, Julian went rigid the second the first distant shriek reached his ears.
"they’re so close host," the fox whispered, pressed tight against his side, voice barely more than breath. "very very close."
The old woman’s hand flew to her mouth, and her husband pulled her back gently from the window, both of them frozen and silent, following Julian’s lead without question now.
Outside, low, guttural moans drifted closer, the shuffling scrape of feet against dirt, the occasional sharp, hungry shriek of something searching, hunting, sniffing at the edges of a scent trail that had gone cold the moment Julian crossed this threshold.
Julian held his breath, every muscle locked tight, willing his own heartbeat to slow, to quiet, to not be the thing that gave them away. The fox pressed even closer, and Julian could feel it working, some small, quiet effort humming faint beneath its fur, pulling whatever trace of him might still linger in the air and folding it away from anything that might be searching for it.
The shuffling paused directly outside the window. Nobody breathed. Along, terrible minute stretched past, the moans and shuffling footsteps circling once, twice, before finally, gradually, fading back into the distance, drawn elsewhere, off toward some other trail that led nowhere useful at all.
Julian let his breath out slow and shaking, the old man’s hand landing heavy and grateful on his shoulder, silent thanks passing between them without a single word needed.
"they’re gone," the fox murmured after a long moment, tails finally unclenching from where they’d been wound tight around itself. "for now."
Julian sagged back against the wall, exhaustion and relief crashing over him in equal measure. "how long can you keep hiding me like that."
"as long as I have to," the fox said, though something tired crept into its voice too. "but it costs something every time. we won’t be able to hide forever."
---
Xavier stood at the edge of his territory, fury rolling off him in waves as report after report came back the same. Nothing. No trace. No trail. His search parties combing every road, every field, every scrap of territory within range, and finding absolutely nothing to show for it.
"That’s impossible," he muttered, hands curling into fists at his sides. "he can’t have simply vanished. something is blocking me but I don’t know what it is."
He reached again for the connection that should have led him straight to Julian, the resonance he’d built so carefully, so patiently, and found only the same maddening emptiness as before, something deliberately, skillfully smoothing over every trace he tried to grasp.
Something clever was protecting him. Something that understood exactly how Xavier’s senses worked, and exactly how to slip beneath them.
Xavier’s jaw tightened, fury cooling into something colder and infinitely more dangerous.
"clever," he said quietly, almost admiring despite himself. "very clever, little fox."
He turned from the empty horizon, robes snapping sharp behind him, voice dropping low and absolute.
"you think this changes anything," he said, to no one, to the wind, to Julian wherever he was hiding. "you think running buys you freedom. No it doesn’t. it only delays the inevitable, and makes the ending far less gentle than it could have been."
His eyes darkened, something ancient and patient and utterly certain settling behind them.
"Julian," he said softly, "I will make you regret ever leaving this place."
