Julian’s head snapped toward the sound, heart slamming hard against his ribs, and there, cutting through the tree line with his blade already drawn, was Reid.

"Reid..." Julian’s voice cracked on the name, relief and disbelief crashing through him so hard his knees nearly buckled right there in the dirt.

There wasn’t time for anything more than that. The horde was already closing, and Reid crashed into the fight a heartbeat later, blade cutting down the first rogue before it ever reached Julian, Jayden’s gold light flaring bright just behind him as he tore into the horde’s flank with brutal, furious efficiency.

"protect the couple!" Julian shouted, voice raw, forcing himself to stay upright despite his legs threatening to give out. "they’re innocent, they’ve got nothing to do with any of this..."

"got it," Logan called back, already moving to shield the trembling old couple, cutting down anything that strayed too close with sharp, controlled strikes.

Julian threw himself back into the fight despite every screaming protest from his exhausted body, fists connecting with gray flesh, guiding energy flickering weak and unsteady in his palms, nowhere near the strength he’d have on a good day but enough, barely enough, to matter.

Reid fought his way to Julian’s side, blade a blur of motion, cutting down two more rogues before he finally got close enough to grab Julian’s shoulder, steadying him even mid-fight.

"you’re really here," Reid said, breathless, disbelief and fierce relief warring plainly across his face even as he fought. "gods, Julian, you’re actually here..."

"kind of in the middle of something," Julian said, though his voice cracked on it, exhaustion and emotion tangled too close together to fully separate.

"right," Reid said, and turned back to the fight with renewed, furious purpose, cutting a clear path through the horde with Julian fighting at his back.

Jayden reached them moments later, gold light blazing bright enough to illuminate the darkening field, and the raw relief on his face when his eyes landed on Julian nearly undid him entirely mid-strike.

"you’re alive," Jayden said, voice thick, driving his fist through another rogue without looking away from Julian for more than a second. "I thought... we all thought..."

"tell me later," Julian said, forcing himself to keep moving despite his vision starting to swim at the edges. "kind of busy."

The horde thinned steadily under the combined assault, Sentinels from the search party arriving in waves now, cutting down the scattered rogues with practiced, brutal efficiency until the field finally, mercifully, fell quiet.

Julian’s legs gave out the moment the last rogue dropped, and only Reid’s fast reflexes kept him from hitting the ground, catching him firm under both arms.

"easy," Reid said, voice rough. "I’ve got you. I’ve got you."

"the couple," Julian managed, even as darkness crept in hard at the edges of his vision. "are they..."

"safe," Logan called over, voice tight with his own relief. "both of them. shaken, but safe."

Julian let his head drop back against Reid’s shoulder, the adrenaline finally draining out of him all at once, leaving nothing but bone-deep exhaustion and a fragile, disbelieving relief he barely trusted yet.

"you found me," he murmured, voice barely audible.

"we never stopped looking," Reid said fiercely, arms tightening around him. "not for one single day."

---

They made camp a short distance from the farmhouse once the immediate danger passed, the old couple settled safely with a small contingent of Sentinels standing careful watch over them, and Julian, finally allowed to sit still, found himself surrounded on all sides by faces he’d genuinely feared he might never see again.

"there’s a lot you don’t know," Julian said, voice still rough, the fox curled tight and exhausted in his lap. "something’s been wearing my face at the academy this whole time. did you..."

"we know," Reid said grimly. "we found out. it’s dead. it’s over."

Julian’s breath caught, something in his chest finally, fully unclenching for the first time in what felt like years. "you know it wasn’t me."

"we know everything wasn’t as it seemed," Jayden said, kneeling close, something raw and unguarded in his expression that Julian had never quite seen from him before. "we should have caught it sooner. I’m sorry we didn’t."

"you didn’t know what to look for," Julian said. "I don’t blame any of you."

Logan, sitting a short distance away, hadn’t said much since the fighting ended, staring at Julian with an expression caught somewhere between relief and something far more painful. "I told that thing things," he said finally, voice quiet, almost ashamed. "things I meant for you. and it wasn’t even..."

"Logan," Julian said, cutting him off gently. "we’ll figure that out later. right now I’m just glad you’re all actually here."

Something eased slightly in Logan’s shoulders at that, though the guilt clearly hadn’t fully lifted.

Reid stayed close through all of it, hand resting steady on Julian’s shoulder like he needed the physical proof as much as the conversation, and for a long, quiet moment, surrounded by firelight and exhausted relief, Julian let himself simply breathe.

’safe,’ he thought, letting his eyes drift shut for just a moment. ’finally. actually safe.’

---

He should have known better. The air around the camp shifted first, subtle and wrong, the fire’s light flickering unnaturally despite no wind to explain it, and Julian’s whole body went rigid before he even consciously registered why.

"something’s wrong," the fox said, jolting upright in his lap, ears snapping flat against its skull.

Reid’s hand tightened on his shoulder, already reaching for his blade with the other. "Julian?"

The temperature dropped hard and fast, breath fogging visible in air that had been warm just seconds before, and from the tree line at the edge of camp, unhurried and utterly calm despite the dozens of exhausted, battle-worn Sentinels suddenly turning weapons in his direction, Xavier stepped into the firelight.

"there you are," he said softly, eyes locking on Julian with cold, possessive satisfaction, as if the entire horde, the entire chase, the entire battle that had just been fought and won meant absolutely nothing at all now that he’d finally arrived in person. "did you really think a few Sentinels and some borrowed courage would be enough to keep you from me?"

Every weapon in the camp swung up at once, and Jayden’s gold light flared bright and furious, Reid stepping half in front of Julian on pure instinct. But Xavier didn’t so much as flinch.

"I’m only going to ask once," he said, voice mild, terrifyingly calm. "hand him over, and the rest of you can walk away from this. or don’t, and I promise you, none of you will enjoy what happens next."
