Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 53: Broken WordJulian’s throat felt tight, every word costing more than it should. "fine," he said finally, voice hoarse but steady. "I’ll go with you. call them back. all of them. right now, before I take a single step toward you."
"Julian, NO..." Reid’s grip tightened hard around his wrist, desperate, refusing to let go. "you can’t... we haven’t even tried everything, don’t you dare..."
"I have to," Julian said, not looking away from Xavier, forcing his voice to stay level even as his chest cracked wide open with the weight of what he was agreeing to. "hundreds of people, Reid. I can live with whatever happens to me. I can’t live with letting that many people die because I was too scared to make the trade."
Jayden’s face had gone white, something breaking visibly behind his eyes. "there has to be another way," he said, voice cracking. "please, just give us more time..."
"there isn’t time," Julian said. "you heard the numbers. every minute costs somebody something. I’m not letting that be on me."
Xavier watched the exchange with quiet, patient satisfaction, savoring every desperate protest like it was simply confirmation of how right he’d been all along. "wise choice," he said softly. "I knew you’d see reason eventually."
"call them back," Julian said again, harder this time. "now. before I move."
Xavier’s mouth curved slow and pleased. "of course."
He lifted one hand, unhurried, and something shifted in the air, a low hum rippling outward from him like a stone dropped into still water.
[Host. Monitoring signal changes.]
Julian held his breath, watching, waiting for some sign the horde was actually retreating, that the number of bitten and turned would finally start climbing down instead of up.
[No change detected. Aberration activity remains unchanged. Casualties continuing to rise.]
Julian’s blood went cold. "nothing’s happening," he said, voice sharp. "they’re not stopping. call them back for real."
Xavier’s expression didn’t so much as flicker. "I am calling them back," he said mildly. "it simply takes a moment for the signal to fully..."
"you’re lying," Julian said, fury and horror colliding hard in his chest. "you were never going to call them back at all, were you."
Something in Xavier’s composed mask finally slipped, just slightly, amusement bleeding through where regret should have been. "does it matter now," he said. "you already agreed. the choice was made the second you said yes. everything after that is simply detail."
"you PROMISED..."
"I said what I needed to say to get the answer I wanted," Xavier said, voice cooling into something flat and merciless. "did you really believe someone willing to kidnap you, poison you, and mark you against your will would suddenly develop a conscience the moment it became convenient for you?"
Reid’s blade was already moving before Xavier finished speaking, fury overriding every ounce of restraint he’d been holding onto, but Xavier caught the strike almost lazily, twisting the blade aside with barely any visible effort.
"you son of a..." Reid snarled.
"careful," Xavier said, shoving him back hard enough to send him stumbling. "I’d hate to have to hurt you in front of him. it would only complicate things."
Julian’s whole body shook with fury now, the horror of realizing he’d offered himself up for absolutely nothing crashing through him in waves. "you used me," he said, voice breaking. "you made me choose, made me believe I could actually save people, and it was never even real..."
"it was entirely real," Xavier said. "the horde is real. the casualties are real. I simply never intended to stop any of it regardless of what you chose. you were always coming with me, Julian. the only variable was whether you’d walk willingly or not."
Something snapped inside Julian then, grief and fury and betrayal all colliding into something white-hot and reckless.
"then I take it back," Julian said, voice shaking but hard as steel. "the deal’s off. you lied, so I’m not honoring a single word of it."
Xavier’s eyes narrowed slightly, something almost delighted flickering behind the cold fury. "there it is," he murmured. "there’s the fire I’ve been waiting for."
"Jayden," Julian said, not looking away from Xavier for even a second, "Logan. Reid. we’re not doing this his way. we fight. all of us. right now."
Jayden’s gold light flared bright and furious in response, some of the horror in his expression hardening fast into resolve. "finally," he said, "something I actually want to hear."
The clearing erupted into motion, Reid and Jayden and Logan converging on Xavier from three directions at once, and Julian, exhausted and weakened but done letting fear dictate his choices, threw himself into the fight alongside them, guiding energy flaring unstable but present in his hands.
Xavier fought back hard this time, no longer holding back the way he had during their first confrontation, shadow and cold fury lashing out in every direction, but something had shifted in the fight’s rhythm now... Julian wasn’t standing back, wasn’t waiting to be saved, and the shift in dynamic seemed to genuinely unsettle Xavier for the first time since Julian had met him.
"you can’t win this," Xavier snarled, deflecting a strike from Jayden hard enough to send sparks flying. "even together, you can’t..."
"we don’t have to win," Julian shot back, forcing another pulse of light from his hands despite the exhaustion screaming through every muscle. "we just have to survive long enough for reinforcements to actually stop that horde. every second you spend fighting us here is a second you’re not spending controlling them."
Something in Xavier’s expression flickered, calculation crossing fast behind his fury, and Julian realized with grim satisfaction that he’d found the actual weak point in the plan... Xavier’s attention, like everything else about him, could only stretch so far at once.
"clever," Xavier admitted, voice tight, blocking another strike from Reid. "but not clever enough to save everyone."
"we’ll see about that," Julian said, and drove himself back into the fight with everything he had left, refusing, absolutely refusing, to let this be the moment where giving up finally won.
