Neither Reid nor Jayden nor Logan ever saw it happen.
One second, Julian stood between them, exhausted, guiding energy flickering weak in his palms, still fighting despite everything, still refusing to let his own depletion stop him from throwing another unstable pulse of light into the fray. The next, a blur of motion tore through the clearing too fast for any of them to properly register, and a hand clamped hard over Julian’s mouth before he could so much as gasp, another gripping the back of his neck with practiced, ruthless precision.
Julian’s vision blurred violently, pain lancing sharp through his skull as pressure found exactly the right point along his spine, and the last thing he registered before darkness swallowed him whole was the sensation of being lifted, weightless, the world rushing past faster than thought, faster than fear, faster than the desperate, half-formed instinct to fight back that never had the chance to fully form. Then he was simply gone.
"JULIAN!" Reid’s voice tore raw across the clearing the moment he realized what had happened, spinning in a desperate circle, blade raised toward empty air where Julian had been standing only a heartbeat before. "JULIAN..."
Nothing answered. No trace remained, no lingering warmth in the space he’d occupied, no sound of retreating footsteps, nothing at all except the horrified, ringing silence of a battlefield that had lost the one thing everyone had been fighting to protect. The fire crackled on, indifferent, casting long shadows across a clearing that suddenly felt far too large and far too empty all at once.
"where did he go," Jayden said, voice cracking, spinning wildly himself, gold light flickering unstable around trembling fists, eyes darting frantically across every shadow, every tree line, searching for anything at all that might explain what had just happened. "where... how did they just..."
"I guessed they moved too fast," Logan said, breathless, horror etched deep into every line of his face, weapon still raised uselessly at nothing. "I didn’t even see them cross the distance. one second he was there, the next..."
"I was standing right beside him," Reid said, voice hollow, staring down at his own empty hands like they’d personally failed him. "right beside him, and I still couldn’t..."
He didn’t finish the sentence, jaw clenching hard enough that the muscle jumped visibly along his scarred cheek.
Beyond the clearing, out across the countryside where the scattered horde had spread chaos through the night, something shifted. The shrieking, guttural moans that had filled the darkness for hours began, one by one, to quiet, gray shapes slowing their relentless advance, some stopping entirely mid-stride as though a puppeteer had simply released their strings all at once, leaving them standing still and hollow in fields and roadways across the countryside.
"Are they pulling back," someone shouted from the edge of the search party, disbelieving, voice carrying clear across the sudden, eerie quiet settling over the land. "the Aberrations... they’re just stopping, huh they’re retreating on their own..."
Reid barely registered the words at first, chest heaving, still staring at the empty space where Julian had vanished, fury and horror and grief crashing through him in waves too large to properly separate. Slowly, the meaning of it sank in, cold and bitter.
"he got what he wanted," Reid said, voice hollow. "he never needed us gone. he never needed to win the fight. he just needed one clean opening, and we handed it to him the second we let our guard down for even a second."
Somewhere far beyond the clearing, carried on a cold wind that shouldn’t have existed on a warm summer night, a voice curled soft and satisfied through the dark, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
"until next time," Ian’s voice said, flat and toneless even in its quiet triumph. "but for now, Julian is ours."
The words settled over the clearing like a physical weight, and for a long, terrible moment, nobody moved at all. Even the search party at the edges of the tree line had gone still, weapons lowered, faces pale in the flickering firelight, none of them quite able to process how thoroughly the fight they’d just survived had ended in nothing but loss.
---
Jayden was the first to break the silence, voice raw. "we go after him. right now. we don’t stop, we don’t rest, we..."
"we don’t even know where they took him," Reid said, and hated how hollow his own voice sounded, hated the helplessness clawing up his throat even as every instinct screamed at him to move, to fight, to do something, anything at all. "the mountain trail went cold before. we have no reason to believe it won’t again."
"then we make a reason," Logan said fiercely, gripping his weapon so hard his knuckles had gone white, voice shaking with barely restrained fury. "we tear apart every inch of territory within a hundred miles if we have to. I am not standing here accepting that he’s just..."
"nobody’s accepting anything," Reid snapped, more sharply than he intended, grief bleeding raw through every word. "but screaming into the dark isn’t going to bring him back either. we need a plan. we need information. we need..."
He stopped, jaw working, exhaustion and fury and grief all colliding at once, and for a long moment simply stood there, staring at the empty clearing, at the dying fire, at the old couple huddled together nearby, watching the whole unraveling scene with wide, horrified eyes.
The search party began regrouping slowly around them, exhausted Sentinels checking each other for wounds, murmuring low, uncertain reports back and forth about the retreating horde, about scattered rogues left standing frozen and hollow in fields miles away, easy enough now to put down without further bloodshed. Small mercy, if it could even be called that, weighed against everything else the night had cost.
"the capital," Reid said finally, forcing steadiness back into his voice. "we go back. we tell the Emperor everything... the twins, the horde, all of it. we gather every resource left before we move again. running blind into the dark accomplished nothing the first time. it won’t accomplish anything now either."
Jayden’s jaw tightened, every instinct clearly screaming to just run, to chase, to do something immediately, but after a long, tense moment he finally exhaled and nodded, some of the wild desperation settling into grim, focused resolve instead.
"fine," he said. "the capital. but we move fast. I’m not losing him again because we spent too long being careful."
"we won’t be careless," Reid said. "but we won’t be careless the other direction either, chasing shadows into territory we don’t understand with nothing but fury to guide us. that’s how we lost him the first time. I’m not making that mistake twice."
Logan said nothing for a long moment, staring out at the dark tree line where the twins had vanished, something raw and helpless twisting behind his expression. "I keep thinking," he said finally, voice quiet, "about everything I said to that thing wearing his face. every apology. every promise. and the real him was out there this whole time, fighting alone, and now he’s gone again, and I still haven’t gotten the chance to say any of it to him properly."
"you will," Jayden said, though the words came out rougher than he probably intended, some of his own grief bleeding through the reassurance. "we’ll get that chance. all of us will."
Reid didn’t answer that, mostly because he didn’t trust himself to promise anything right now, not with Julian’s face still burned bright behind his eyes, exhausted and defiant and terrified all at once in the half-second before he vanished.
"we won’t lose him," Reid said instead, quiet and fierce, more to himself than anyone else. "not permanently. not while I still have breath left to do something about it."
Behind them, the old couple sat huddled close together, the woman’s hand pressed tight over her mouth, tears streaking silent down her weathered face, her husband’s arm wrapped tight around her shoulders.
"he protected us," the old man said quietly, voice thick. "even like this, even weak as he was, even after everything he must have already survived to get to us, he stood in front of us without a second thought.
"that’s who he is," Logan said, kneeling briefly beside them, voice rough but certain. "that’s exactly who he’s always been, since the moment I met him, even when I didn’t deserve to see it."
"we’ll bring him home," Logan added, firmer now. "I promise you that."
The old woman nodded, though the fear in her eyes didn’t fully fade, her hands still trembling faintly even as she reached to grip her husband’s arm tighter.
Reid turned away from them slowly, gaze sweeping once more across the empty clearing, across the dying fire, across every inch of ground where Julian had stood only minutes before, fighting until the very last second he had control over his own fate.
"move out," Reid called finally, voice carrying hard and clear across the assembled search party, cutting through the lingering shock and grief with the force of pure, unbending resolve. "we’re heading back to the capital. now."
Above them, the night sky stretched dark and indifferent, the last echoes of the retreating horde fading slowly into silence across the wounded, uncertain countryside, and somewhere far beyond anyone’s reach, Julian was already being carried further and further away from every single person still standing in that clearing, refusing to give up on bringing him home.
