Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 87: Two DaysIan found Xavier in his private chamber, and for once, didn’t wait for the right moment or careful phrasing before speaking.
"I need to tell you something," Ian said, closing the door behind him. "and I need you to actually listen before you react."
Xavier looked up, something wary flickering behind his exhaustion. "Ian—"
"Julian isn’t simply talented," Ian said, cutting through whatever protest was forming. "he’s not simply a gifted Guide who happened to manifest an unprecedented rank. he crossed over. the same way we were made, generations ago. something reached across from elsewhere and touched him too, just as it touched our family."
Xavier went very still. "that’s not possible."
"his resistance to the toxin. his teleportation ability, drawn from something that doesn’t exist within a Guide’s natural classification. the way he understands corrupted behavior with an intimacy no native Guide should possess." Ian’s voice remained flat, methodical, laying out the evidence the same way he laid out troop movements. "I’ve considered every alternative explanation. none of them fit as cleanly as this one."
"So you’re saying," Xavier said slowly, voice tight, "that he’s connected to it. to what made us."
"I’m saying," Ian said, "that everything we’ve built, every reason we’ve told ourselves for what we do — expanding, converting, proving our strength — has existed to keep something ancient and patient satisfied enough not to intervene directly. and I believe, now, that it’s already taking interest in Julian specifically. because he represents exactly the kind of anomaly it’s always eventually noticed, across however many worlds it’s touched before this one."
Xavier’s hands curled slowly into fists. "then we protect him," he said, voice hard. "if it’s already watching him, we keep him close, we—"
"or we let him go," Ian said quietly.
Xavier’s head snapped up. "what."
"think about it properly," Ian said. "if he’s what I believe he is, then keeping him here, contained, weakened, chained — we’re not protecting him from it. we’re simply presenting it exactly the target it’s already looking for, gift-wrapped and convenient. if it decides to take direct interest, our containment won’t stop it any more than our parents’ combined strength stopped it that night."
Xavier’s breath came ragged, fury and fear tangling together visibly across his expression. "and if we release him, and it takes him anyway. or worse, if it decides we’re no longer necessary at all, now that something more interesting has appeared."
"that," Ian admitted, "is the risk either way."
The room fell into heavy, uneasy silence, both brothers turning the impossible calculation over in their own private ways.
"we could lose everything," Xavier said finally, voice rough. "whatever we’ve built here. whatever purpose we’ve told ourselves we serve. if it decides we’re expendable now that it’s noticed him—"
He didn’t finish the sentence, but he didn’t need to. Both of them understood exactly what came next in that thought — that the same entity which had made them, generations ago, could unmake them just as easily, without warning, without mercy, the instant it decided their usefulness had run its course.
Something shifted in the air around them then, subtle and wrong, the candle flames along the chamber walls bending sideways though no draft explained it, the temperature dropping several degrees in the space of a single breath. Both brothers went rigid at once.
*I heard that,* a voice said, vast and formless, curling through the room from everywhere and nowhere at once, carrying none of the theatrical menace either brother had grown accustomed to wielding themselves, simply cold, absolute, ancient certainty. *interesting conversation.*
Xavier’s whole body locked with terror he hadn’t felt in years, some old, buried instinct from a night he barely remembered clearly surging back all at once. Ian, beside him, had gone equally still, jaw tight, every calculated composure he usually wore stripped away entirely in the presence of something that made both of them feel, for one terrible, suspended moment, exactly as small and helpless as they’d been the night it first found them.
*you needn’t fear I’ve come to unmake you,* the voice continued, something that might have been amusement threading cold through the words. *not yet. you’ve served your purpose well enough. but your instincts, both of you, are correct. I am watching him. I have been for some time now.*
Neither brother spoke, frozen in the presence of something that could end them both with less effort than either of them expended converting a single Sentinel.
*do nothing rash,* the voice said finally, already fading, the wrongness in the air receding as quickly as it had arrived. *I will decide what he is worth, in my own time. until then, continue exactly as you have been. change nothing.*
Then, silence. The candles steadied. The temperature returned to normal. And both brothers remained frozen a long moment after, staring at each other, the full weight of how close they’d both just come to losing everything, all at once, without warning, finally, fully settling in.
"we almost lost control of everything just now," Xavier said finally, voice shaking despite his best efforts to steady it. "it could have ended us both, right there, without a second thought."
"it didn’t," Ian said quietly, though his own composure had cracked visibly for the first time Xavier could remember. "which means, for now, we still matter to it. that won’t last indefinitely."
Neither of them said anything further, the unspoken understanding settling heavy between them — that whatever plans either brother had for Julian, whatever possessive obsession or careful calculation had driven their behavior these past weeks, all of it now existed under the shadow of something far more powerful than either of them, patiently deciding their fate right alongside his.
---
In the quiet of his own room, unaware of the conversation that had nearly cost two brothers their lives, Julian sat up sharply at the System’s voice cutting through his thoughts.
[Host. Status update.]
’go ahead.’
[Final calibration has entered its last phase. This unit estimates full readiness within two days.]
Julian’s breath caught, the fox lifting its head sharply from where it had curled against his side. "two days," Julian repeated slowly. "Are you certain this time."
[As certain as this unit can reasonably be, given the complexity of the process. Host should use the remaining time to rest as fully as possible, and to avoid any unnecessary risk. Whatever happens once this ability activates, host’s body will need every available reserve of strength.]
The fox sat up properly now, tails curling with a mixture of excitement and careful caution. "two days," it echoed. "Julian, that’s—"
"I know," Julian said, something fierce and fragile both tightening in his chest. "two days."
He didn’t know, sitting there turning the countdown over with cautious, disbelieving hope, exactly how close Xavier and Ian had just come to losing everything themselves, or exactly what kind of ancient, patient attention had already begun weighing his own fate alongside theirs. He only knew, for the first time in what felt like an eternity, that an actual end to all of this finally, genuinely felt within reach.
’two days,’ Julian thought, closing his eyes, exhaustion and hope tangling together in equal, fragile measure. ’just two more days.’
