Six months later.

The gate ground open, and for the first time in his second life, Eren Yeager rode out past Wall Rose into open ground.

No wall. No walls at all, in any direction. Just grass, and sky, and the horizon doing something he’d never once seen it do — nothing. Just continuing.

"Formation!" Commander Erwin’s voice cut down the line of mounted soldiers, sharp and absolute. "Long-distance scouting formation, hold your positions!"

Eren held his. Beside him, Mikasa’s horse kept perfect pace without her seeming to try. Behind them, Armin’s face had gone the particular shade of green that meant he was doing complicated tactical math and hating every number.

Then the flare went up. Red.

Not from the flanks. From the center.

"That’s not possible," Armin said, voice cracking. "Nothing gets through center formation, that’s the whole point of—"

The ground exploded forty meters ahead of them.

Not a Titan rising from cover. Something underneath the grass, moving fast, low, and Eren’s flicker fired so hard it dropped him sideways off his own horse a half-second before six meters of armored Titan flesh erupted where his saddle had been.

"ARMORED TITAN!" someone screamed down the line. "It came from underground—"

Eren hit the dirt rolling, gear already firing, and looked up into a face he knew.

Not Reiner’s armored form. Reiner rode two horses back, sword already drawn, screaming Eren’s name.

This one was smaller. Faster. And it wasn’t attacking the formation.

It was running straight at him.

"Eren!" Mikasa’s blade was already out, already turning her horse in a hard cut across the grass to intercept — and the smaller Titan didn’t even look at her. It kept coming, dead eyes locked on Eren alone, ignoring three separate cavalry soldiers who put steel into its shoulder trying to slow it down.

It’s not mindless, Eren realized, ice flooding his chest. It’s hunting. Specifically me.

No time to process it. The Titan closed the last twenty meters in under two seconds, hand already closing—

Eren didn’t decide to transform. His body decided for him, the way it had once in Trost, agony and light and the world going vast and strange as his own Titan form erupted upward to meet the smaller one head-on, the two colliding hard enough to throw a shockwave through the formation that knocked three horses off their feet.

Grab. Twist. Don’t let it reach the nape—

The smaller Titan was fast, faster than Eren’s own borrowed instincts could fully track, and it got a hand around his throat before he registered the danger, squeezing with force that should have crushed his transformed neck like paper.

It didn’t crush. But it hurt, blindingly, and through the haze of pain Eren heard — actually heard, distorted and impossible — a voice come out of the attacking Titan’s throat.

A voice he recognized.

"I’m sorry," it said. "I don’t have a choice anymore. They have my sister."

Annie.

The revelation cost him a half-second of hesitation, and Annie’s Titan used it, driving him backward through the grass hard enough to crack ribs even in his transformed body, steam venting from both of them as the fight turned suddenly, brutally serious.

"Eren!" Mikasa’s voice from somewhere below, distant and frantic, and he heard the unmistakable crack of Reiner’s own transformation beginning nearby, the ground shuddering under new, colossal weight.

This isn’t a Titan attack, Eren understood, agony and clarity tangling together as Annie’s grip tightened again. This is Marley. Testing me. Sending someone who can’t refuse.

He drove his own hand forward, aiming for her nape on pure trained instinct, and Annie twisted at the last possible second — not fast enough to fully dodge, fast enough that his strike tore through her shoulder instead of ending the fight outright.

She screamed, human and Titan both, the sound raw enough that Eren’s borrowed body flinched despite everything.

"Annie, stop!" he tried to shout, though his transformed throat mangled the words into something barely human. "We can help you! Whoever has your sister—"

"You can’t." Her voice, thick with pain and grief. "Nobody can. That’s the whole point."

She lunged again, and this time Reiner’s colossal form arrived between them before the strike landed, massive arms shoving her sideways with bone-jarring force, buying Eren the half-second he needed to scramble backward, chest heaving, transformed body already beginning to fail from damage and exhaustion both.

"Fall back!" Erwin’s voice, somewhere below, absolute and unshaking despite the chaos. "Full retreat to the wall, NOW!"

Eren’s Titan form collapsed a moment later, control slipping entirely, and he hit the ground in his human body with barely enough consciousness left to register Mikasa’s arms catching him before the world went dark.

He woke to the jolt of a moving wagon, Mikasa’s face the first thing he saw, blood-streaked and furious with worry.

"You’re awake." Her voice cracked with relief. "Don’t you dare do that again without warning me."

"Annie—"

"Retreated. Reiner’s still with her, or was, last I saw." Mikasa’s jaw was tight, fury and heartbreak tangled together. "She said someone has her sister. I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t know if it matters, given what she just tried to do to you."

Eren stared up at the wagon’s canvas roof, agony and horror and grief colliding in his exhausted chest.

They’re using hostages now. Families. Whoever’s running this from Marley’s side has stopped playing by any rules at all.

"This is different," he said quietly. "Everything before this — Reiner, Kessler, even Zeke — felt like it had edges. Rules, even unspoken ones." He met Mikasa’s eyes, dread settling cold and absolute. "This doesn’t. Whoever’s actually in charge just showed us they’ll use anything. Anyone. However cruel it has to be."

Mikasa took his hand, her grip fierce despite the fresh horror of the day. "Then we adjust again. The same way we always have."

"This feels bigger than adjusting."

"Maybe." She didn’t soften the truth, didn’t pretend otherwise. "But we’re still alive. Annie’s still fighting for something, even if it’s fear instead of choice. That’s not nothing, Eren, however dark today got."

Outside the wagon, Wall Rose rose slowly back into view, and somewhere behind them, beyond the horizon Eren had glimpsed for the first time today, an enemy had just proven it was willing to weaponize love itself to get what it wanted.

The countdown was over. The war had only just started showing its true shape.
