News of their return spread through the Survey Corps encampment before their boat had even fully docked, and by the time Eren limped down the gangway, shoulder bandaged and exhaustion etched into every line of his posture, half the garrison had gathered to witness the impossible.
"You’re insane," Sasha said, staring between Eren’s bandaged shoulder and the small, wary girl standing close beside Reiner. "Actually, certifiably insane. You went into Marley."
"We did." Armin, swaying slightly with exhaustion, managed a tired grin. "I have extensive notes. I intend to write the single greatest account of a rescue mission in Survey Corps history, assuming I survive long enough to finish transcribing my own handwriting."
Erwin arrived moments later, expression carrying its usual controlled calm, though something in his eyes softened slightly as he took in the state of the returning team — and the girl beside them.
"Ymir Fritz, I presume," he said.
"Yes, sir." Her voice came out smaller than her earlier steadiness had suggested, the reality of a new, strange world clearly settling in now that the desperate urgency of escape had finally passed.
"You’re safe here," Erwin said, something almost gentle in his usually formal tone. "Whatever comes next, that much I can promise you absolutely." His gaze shifted to Eren. "We’ll debrief properly once you’ve all received medical attention. For now — well done, all of you. I won’t pretend I expected this mission to succeed as cleanly as it did."
The medical tent buzzed with quiet activity for hours afterward, wounds cleaned and bound, exhausted bodies finally allowed to rest, and it was well past midnight before Eren found himself alone with Mikasa in a quiet corner of the recovery ward, both of them bandaged and bruised but undeniably, gratefully alive.
"Annie’s crystal is still in the storage bunker," Mikasa said quietly, watching him carefully for his reaction. "Nobody’s found a way to break it open. But if she’s somehow aware, somehow watching from wherever she’s trapped—"
"Then she should know her sister’s safe." Eren’s voice carried quiet, fierce certainty despite his exhaustion. "Whatever it takes, whenever she finally wakes from that crystal, I want her to know immediately. Not as leverage. Not as a bargaining tool. Just — the truth, because she earned that much, choosing not to kill me when she had every opportunity."
Mikasa studied him for a long moment, something warm and proud flickering behind her tired eyes. "You’ve changed so much, this past year. I don’t think the boy who first told me about his system, back on that rooftop, would have imagined caring this much about an enemy soldier’s wellbeing."
"Maybe. Or maybe I’ve just gotten better at recognizing that most people caught in this war didn’t choose to be weapons any more than I chose to carry a countdown in my head since birth." He reached for her hand, lacing their fingers together with the same steady certainty that had carried them through every impossible thing this fight had demanded. "I don’t want to become someone who only sees enemies to defeat, Mikasa. I want to become someone who still sees the people underneath, even when the fight demands otherwise. I think that’s the only way any of this ends up meaning something worthwhile, when it’s finally over."
She kissed him then, soft and slow despite their shared exhaustion, the kind of kiss that spoke of two years of growth and love and hard-won wisdom, tangled together into something neither of them could have imagined when this journey first began.
"I love the man you’re becoming," she murmured against his lips. "However much this war costs either of us, I don’t regret a single moment of watching you become exactly this."
Ymir found them there an hour later, hesitant in the doorway, clearly working up the courage for something.
"Can I ask you something?" she said, addressing Eren directly. "Why did you actually come for me? You didn’t know me. You barely knew Annie, from what Reiner’s told me. Why risk everything you did, for someone you’d never even met?"
Eren considered the question carefully before answering, weighing the full weight of everything the past year had taught him about choice, and sacrifice, and the value of proving kindness possible even in the middle of devastating war.
"Because someone once gave me a second chance I didn’t deserve," he said finally. "A whole life’s worth of people who chose to trust me, protect me, love me, even when I hadn’t yet earned any of it. I decided a while ago that I wanted to be the kind of person who extends that same chance to others, whenever I possibly can. Even to someone I’d never met. Even to the sister of someone who’d tried, days before, to kill me."
Ymir’s expression cracked slightly, old wariness giving way to something rawer, more grateful. "That’s either the kindest thing anyone’s ever done for me, or the most reckless."
"Probably both," Mikasa said, a small smile tugging at her exhausted expression. "That tends to be how most of his decisions work out."
Ymir managed a small, genuine laugh — the first Eren had heard from her since they’d found her in that camp — and something in the quiet medical tent eased, just slightly, the weight of the past nine days finally beginning to settle into something more bearable.
"Thank you," she said quietly. "For coming. For everything you all risked to get me out."
"You’re safe now," Eren said simply. "That’s all that actually matters, going forward."
Later, once Ymir had finally retired to the small cot arranged for her, and the medical tent had settled into quiet, exhausted rest around them, Eren found himself once more alone with Mikasa, the accumulated weight and triumph of the past weeks finally, fully settling over both of them.
"We’re going to have to face Marley again," he said quietly. "Properly. Not a rescue mission this time, but the real fight — whatever Zeke’s still planning, whatever the true cost of the Founding Titan actually demands. This was just the beginning."
"I know." Mikasa’s hand found his, steady despite the daunting truth of it. "But we proved something important tonight, Eren. We proved this fight doesn’t have to cost us who we actually are, becoming who we need to be to survive it. We proved kindness and courage aren’t opposites in the middle of war. That matters, going forward, more than I think either of us fully understands yet."
He pulled her close, exhaustion and love and fierce, hard-won hope all tangling together as the walls stood steady and rebuilding around them, carrying within their borders a fragile, precious peace that two lifetimes of fighting had finally, however temporarily, managed to secure.
"Whatever comes next," he murmured into her hair, "we face it exactly like this. Together, without losing who we’ve become along the way."
"Together," she agreed, and beneath the quiet canvas of the medical tent, surrounded by the exhausted, grateful sounds of a mission successfully completed, two people who’d chosen each other through boars and Titans and impossible missions into enemy territory finally allowed themselves, for one brief, precious night, simply to rest.
The war was far from over. Zeke’s warnings still loomed unresolved, Marley’s true intentions still waited to be fully understood, and the Founding Titan’s terrible power still cast its shadow over everything ahead.
But for tonight, within walls that stood a little stronger for everything they’d survived together, Eren allowed himself to believe, fully and completely, that whatever storms still waited on the horizon, he’d face them exactly the way he’d learned to face everything — with courage, with kindness, and with Mikasa’s hand fierce and certain in his, no matter how far the fight still had left to go.
