It started with a question Armin asked almost in passing, three days after Eren’s near-fatal collapse — the kind of question that unravels everything once you actually sit with it.
"Eren," he said, flipping back through months of his own careful notes, "when did the system first activate? The exact moment. Not the moment you noticed it. The actual first moment."
"The day I was born. Same as the memories."
"Are you sure?" Armin’s voice had gone strange, careful. "Because I went back through every entry we ever logged — every draw, every fragment, every warning — and I noticed something. The system never once gave you anything you didn’t already, on some level, want badly enough to ask for. Reflexes, right before the boar. Danger sense, right before the stranger at the warehouse. Titan physiology, right when you needed a weakness to exploit. Coordinate resonance, right before you needed to survive Trost." He looked up, dread written plain across his face. "A random gacha system doesn’t know what you need next. It just doesn’t. Random means random."
Eren sat with that, cold dread pooling slow in his stomach. "You’re saying it’s not random."
"I’m saying I think it’s been listening. Responding. Shaping you, one convenient gift at a time, toward something." Armin’s hands trembled slightly around his notebook. "And I think I know what that something is, now, after the dream you described. The golden field. The girl under the tree."
Eren reached for the system that night, alone, deliberately, a question forming in his mind with more suspicion than he’d ever directed at it before.
"Have you been guiding me? On purpose?"
The pause that followed felt different than every other pause the system had ever given him — longer, weightier, almost reluctant.
[Query acknowledged. Partial disclosure authorized at current trust threshold.]
"Then answer honestly. For once."
[The ’system’ interface was established as a communication bridge, not a random reward mechanism. Origin: Founding Titan resonance, Ymir Fritz. Purpose: guide host toward voluntary Coordinate activation. All prior ’draws’ were selected, not randomized, to build host trust and capability toward this outcome.]
The words landed like a physical blow, two years of careful, hard-won progress reframing itself instantly into something far darker.
"The countdown," Eren demanded, hands shaking. "The visions of the wall falling. Was any of that even real, or was it something you showed me to manipulate my choices?"
[The visions were accurate. The urgency was not artificially inflated. However: host’s belief that preventing Shiganshina’s fall was the primary objective was permitted to persist because it served as effective motivation toward the true objective — sufficient power accumulation for eventual Founder activation.]
"You used my mother’s life as a training exercise."
[Host’s love for his mother was not manufactured. It was, however, utilized.]
Eren stared into the dark of the barracks, rage and betrayal and grief tangling together into something he didn’t have words for, every "gift," every fragment, every carefully-timed reflex enhancement reframing itself now as a leash he’d been gratefully, willingly walking himself into.
He told Mikasa and Armin everything before dawn, voice raw with the fresh wound of it, watching their faces cycle through the same disbelief and horror he’d already survived alone in the dark.
"Two years," Mikasa said slowly, quietly, fury building beneath her carefully controlled voice. "Two years of watching you carry a countdown, watching you nearly die a dozen times over, and it was all — what, cultivation? Grooming you like livestock toward something that isn’t even your own choice?"
"I don’t know how much of it was even mine," Eren admitted, voice breaking. "The urgency. The drive. Was any of it actually me, or was I just responding exactly the way something wanted me to respond?"
"Your love for your mother was real," Armin said firmly, cutting through the spiral before it could fully take hold. "The system admitted that itself. Whatever it used, it didn’t create you, Eren. It found what was already true and pointed it somewhere useful to its own goals. That’s manipulation, and it’s monstrous, but it’s not the same as you being a puppet with no self underneath the strings."
Mikasa took his hands, forcing his eyes to hers with fierce, unshaken insistence. "Whatever the Founder wants from you, whatever two years of careful manipulation was actually building toward — you get to decide, right now, this morning, whether you finish walking down that path or not. That choice is still entirely yours. Nobody’s system, no ancient bound goddess, gets to take that away unless you let them."
He reached for the system one final time, colder now, deliberate.
"What happens if I refuse? If I never activate the Coordinate the way you’ve been building toward?"
[Then the Founder remains bound. Host retains current abilities without further escalation. Marley’s operations against host continue, unaffected by this choice.]
"And if I activate it, freely, on my own terms, not yours?"
A longer pause this time, something almost like surprise threading through the system’s flat, mechanical tone.
[Unmodeled scenario. The Founder has always required willing activation specifically because forced activation fails. If host activates deliberately, understanding the manipulation and choosing anyway, for his own reasons rather than the ones cultivated — outcome uncertain. Host would retain more control than any prior vessel in recorded history.]
Eren sat with that a long moment, fury slowly settling into something harder, more resolved.
"Then that’s exactly what I’ll do," he said aloud, to Mikasa and Armin both, voice steadier now than it had been all night. "Not because some ancient system decided I should. Because I decide the terms now, on my own timeline, for my own reasons — protecting the people I love, not fulfilling some prophecy built to use me."
Mikasa’s hand tightened around his, fierce pride cutting through her lingering fury. "Then we make sure of that. Every step from here forward — we choose it. Not the system. Not the Founder. Not Marley. Us."
"Us," Eren agreed, and for the first time since the terrible revelation had broken over him hours before, felt something steady beneath the anger — not certainty, not safety, but the fierce, hard-won knowledge that whatever power slept in his blood, whatever two years of careful manipulation had built toward, the choice of what came next remained, finally and truly, his own to make.
Outside, dawn was breaking pale and gold over the rebuilding garrison, and somewhere beyond the walls, a war that had never been simply about Titans at all continued its patient, terrible march toward a reckoning two thousand years in the making.
But for the first time, Eren intended to meet it on his own terms.
