Thirty-eight days out, the entity made itself known directly for the first time — not through a training echo, but a real, physical manifestation off the eastern coastline, close enough that lookout towers spotted the disturbance before dawn.

"It’s early," Historia said, watching the horizon through a borrowed spyglass, her knuckles white around the frame. "Weeks earlier than even the recalculated estimate."

[System alert: Anchorless entity detected within engagement range. Estimated arrival: 6 hours. Ritual not yet ready — Anchor Stability at 89%, requires 90%+ for viable containment.]

"One percent," Eren said, staring at the number like it might change through sheer force of will. "We’re one percent short and it’s six hours away instead of thirty-eight days."

"Then we buy time," Mikasa said, already moving toward the armory. "We don’t need to win today. We need to survive today long enough to finish what we started."

The thing that emerged from the water at midday defied easy description — vaguely Titan-shaped in the way a shadow is vaguely shaped like the object casting it, its form shifting and reforming as it dragged itself onto the beach, steam and something darker venting from a body that seemed to exist in a state of permanent, hungry incompletion.

[Entity classification confirmed: Anchorless — Tier Unknown. Recommend extreme caution. Direct combat not advised until binding ritual is executable.]

"Then what do we do?" Reiner shouted over the rising wind, already positioned with the rest of the defensive line along the cliffs.

"We hold it here," Erwin’s voice cut across the chaos, absolute despite the impossible scale of the threat. "Full formation. Nobody engages directly unless it closes distance on civilians. We are buying Yeager’s group time, nothing more."

The battle that followed bore no resemblance to any fight Eren had trained for. The entity didn’t attack with intelligence or strategy — it simply expanded, formless and vast, absorbing every strike thrown against it with a kind of hungry indifference that left soldiers’ blades sliding uselessly off a surface that seemed to exist between substance and shadow.

"It’s not fighting us," Armin realized, watching from the command post with growing horror. "It’s searching. It’s looking for something."

"Ymir," Eren realized, cold dread crystallizing instantly.

He found her exactly where he feared — standing exposed at the cliff’s edge, staring at the approaching entity with an expression caught somewhere between terror and terrible, magnetic recognition.

"Ymir!" He reached her just as the entity’s attention swept fully toward her, its formless mass rippling with something that might have been anticipation. "Get back, now—"

"You feel it too," a voice said, not from any single direction but from everywhere at once, layered and strange, echoing directly into Eren’s mind the way the Founder’s voice once had. "The girl. Incomplete. Hungry for a self nobody ever let her fully own. I could give her that. All she has to do is stop resisting."

"She’s not incomplete," Eren said aloud, voice steady despite his racing heart, planting himself between Ymir and the approaching mass. "She’s exactly who she’s chosen to become. You don’t get to define her just because you’ve decided that’s easier than actually understanding her."

The entity’s formless shape rippled, something like amusement — or irritation — passing through it. "You speak boldly, vessel-that-refused. I remember your resistance. I remember how the Founder tried to shape you and failed. Perhaps you’ll fail me too. Perhaps not."

It lunged.

[EMERGENCY ALERT: Combat imminent. Anchor Stability insufficient for ritual. Recommend immediate retreat.]

Eren didn’t retreat. He transformed instead, the familiar agony and vastness swallowing him whole as his own Titan form rose to meet the entity’s formless mass, buying Ymir the precious seconds she needed to scramble backward, Mikasa already there to pull her fully clear.

The collision that followed shook the entire cliff face, Eren’s transformed body straining against something that had no fixed shape to properly strike, his borrowed strength finding purchase against an enemy that simply reformed around every blow.

This isn’t a fight I can win through force, he understood, agony and clarity tangling together as the entity’s mass wrapped around his transformed arm, cold and hungry and vast. It’s not solid enough to defeat conventionally.

"Eren, fall back!" Mikasa’s voice, distant and desperate.

He couldn’t. The entity had wrapped fully around his transformed limb now, and he felt something worse than physical pain begin — a pulling sensation, deep and fundamental, as if it were trying to unravel something more essential than flesh.

"Let go of your resistance," the voice whispered directly into his mind, patient and hungry. "I could fill what the system stole from you. Real agency. Real choice, uncorrupted by anyone else’s design. Doesn’t that sound like exactly what you’ve been fighting for all along?"

For one terrible, seductive moment, the offer landed close enough to true that Eren felt his resolve waver.

Then Mikasa’s voice cut through, not distant this time but close, fierce, real — she’d climbed the cliff face itself, gear firing at the last possible second to land directly beside his transformed form, blade already swinging toward the point where the entity’s mass gripped his arm.

"You don’t get to offer him anything," she snarled, striking hard enough to force the grip loose, however briefly. "He already chose. He chose me. He chose this fight, on his own terms. That’s not incompleteness. That’s the opposite of everything you’re trying to sell him."

The entity recoiled, something almost like surprise rippling through its formless mass at the direct, physical interruption of its offer, and Eren felt his own resolve snap back into place, sharp and certain.

"She’s right," he said, voice booming strange and vast from his transformed throat. "Whatever you’re offering, I already have something better. I don’t need you to complete me. I completed that choice a long time ago, with people who actually chose me back."

The entity retreated at dusk, dragging its formless mass back into the sea with what felt, unsettlingly, like patience rather than defeat — a predator choosing to wait rather than admitting failure.

[Threat assessment: Entity retreated. Estimated return: 18-25 days. Anchor Stability: 91% (crisis event contributed unexpected +2%).]

"It’s over ninety," Historia said, disbelief coloring her exhausted voice as she checked the readings. "The crisis itself somehow pushed the stability higher."

"Because we actually proved it, instead of just training for it," Mikasa said, still holding Eren close despite his transformed body having finally, painfully dissolved back to human. "It tried to offer him exactly what would have broken his resolve months ago. It failed because we’ve actually built something real since then."

Eren, exhausted and bruised but alive, looked around at the battered, victorious group gathered on the cliffside — Ymir shaken but unclaimed, Armin already documenting the encounter with trembling but determined hands, Annie holding her sister fiercely, Reiner standing steady despite his own visible exhaustion.

"Eighteen to twenty-five days," he said, voice hoarse. "That’s not much time to close the last nine percent."

"It’s enough," Mikasa said, fierce certainty cutting through her own exhaustion. "We just proved that today. Whatever it throws at us next, we face it the same way. Together, with our eyes open, choosing each other instead of anything it tries to offer instead."

[Active Mission: "The Binding" — 18-25 days to entity’s return. Anchor Stability: 91%. Status: Ready. Awaiting final ritual window.]

Above the cliffs, the first stars emerged through clearing clouds, indifferent witnesses to a battle survived not through strength alone, but through a bond the ancient, hungry thing in the water had tried and failed to unravel.
