Sable found it on the thirty-sixth day, in the old law's archive chamber.

The researcher had been working through the deepest records for two days straight — sleeping on a cot Aethon had placed in the chamber, eating meals Mira brought to the archive door. Sable's leather case sat open on the stone table, pages spread in symbol notation, each page a section of the old law's architecture mapped into visual language.

What Sable found was not the succession procedure. Sable found something else.

The researcher appeared in Silas's study at midday, carrying three pages marked in red charcoal. Sable's face held an expression Silas had learned to read over months of collaboration: controlled excitement, shown through precision — faster speech, sharper gestures, more direct sentences.

"I touched a provision," Sable said.

Silas set down the pen. "What do you mean, touched?"

"I was reading the tablet for the enforcement provision — the growth differential mechanism. I placed my hand on the stone to steady it while I read the reverse side. When my hand touched the tablet, I felt the provision. Physically. A vibration in the hand. A warmth in the fingertips. The same sensation you described when you stand on the source. The provision recognized contact and responded."

Sable set the three pages on the desk. The first described the contact. The second described the response. The third described what Sable did next.

"I experimented. I touched the tablet again — same response. The third time, I pressed my palm flat against the stone and held it. The provision opened. Its operational structure became visible to me. Not the text — I could already read the text. The mechanism beneath the text. The gears. The way the enforcement provision actually works — the growth differential, the compliance evaluation, the exemption criteria. The mechanism was laid open like a diagram. I could see where the provision was damaged. The growth differential mechanism is degraded — the differential between compliant and noncompliant institutions has narrowed. Compliant institutions grow slower than they should. Noncompliant institutions stagnate less than they should. The enforcement provision is losing its teeth."

"Can you repair it?"

Sable paused. Not hesitation — calculation. "I can see the damage. I can identify it. I cannot repair it — repair is the Lawkeeper's function. But I touched the provision's structure where the damage was located. The provision responded differently. The response was directional. The provision oriented toward my touch. The provision leaned toward me, the way a plant leans toward light."

"The provision recognized something in you."

"Not the coordinator's compatibility — I do not have your neural architecture. Something else. A different function. I think the old law has a fourth role — not part of the operational triangle, but a supporting function. The coordinator directs the provisions. The Lawkeeper repairs the provisions. But neither can see the provisions' internal structure with diagnostic precision. I can. I can examine the provisions, identify damage, and map the repairs for the Lawkeeper. Without diagnosis, the Lawkeeper repairs blindly, fixing what the coordinator can feel but cannot precisely locate. With diagnosis, the Lawkeeper repairs with precision."

"A diagnostician."

"A diagnostician. The coordinator feels. The Lawkeeper repairs. I diagnose. The three functions together — direction, diagnosis, repair — are what the old law needs to recover."

Sable pulled the third page forward. The page contained a single diagram — a triangle with a new element beside it, connected to all three points by dotted lines. Labeled in Sable's handwriting: "Provision Interface — Researcher."

"The Council wants you," Silas said. "If the Council learns you can touch the provisions directly, they will want you more than ever."

"The Council's interest was academic before. Now it becomes operational. The Council will want to use me as an instrument. Vargan will want the same. Seraphina may want it too. The ability to diagnose the old law's damage is a political asset. The asset needs protection."

"I need to protect you."

"You need to protect the team. Mira — if Mira accepts the Lawkeeper designation — becomes the third member. You are the coordinator. I am the diagnostician. Mira is the Lawkeeper. The three of us together can stabilize the old law. The three of us separated are three individuals with fragments of the recovery capability. The Council will try to separate us. Vargan will try to separate us. We need to stay together on this mountain. The work is here. The tools are here. The source is here. If we leave, we lose access to the archive, the tablets, the provisions' physical documentation. If we are separated, the recovery fails. The old law dies. The continent's institutional framework collapses. Vargan wins by default."

Sable gathered the pages and left the study without waiting for permission. The researcher had identified a function and was executing it.

Silas sat at the desk and considered the implications. The old law had a coordinator. The old law had a diagnostician. Tomorrow, Mira's decision would determine whether the old law had a Lawkeeper. Three functions, three people, working together on a mountain above a living source.

But three people working together were also three targets. The Council had been pursuing Sable since the foreign audit. Vargan had been pursuing the Crown through financial warfare. Every faction on the continent had a reason to want the old law's recovery team — or to destroy it. The recovery team was the most valuable political asset on the continent, and the asset was sitting on a mountain with no army, no fortification, and no institutional backing beyond the Crown's strained coordination layer.

The triangle was becoming a diamond. Coordinator, diagnostician, Lawkeeper, Iron Merchant. Four points, four functions. Three people, if Mira accepted. The fourth point remained hostile. Vargan Holst held the Iron Merchant's designation, and Vargan was building an empire on the old law's gaps — the same gaps the designation was now closing. The closing gaps meant Vargan's empire was standing on shrinking ground. Vargan would not accept the shrinking quietly.

The diamond was fragile. The diamond was valuable. The diamond was the thing every power on the continent would want to control or destroy. The provisions hummed through the binding. The system held at 61%. Tomorrow was Mira's answer, and the answer would determine whether the diamond had three points or two.

Silas picked up the pen and wrote a note to Maren: increase security around the archive chamber. Sable's discovery made the researcher a target. The note went to the intelligence office by courier. The provisions hummed. The system held. Tomorrow approached.
