A single sentence left Lillian Hughes frozen in place.

She didn’t snap out of it until Randall Jennings had entered the break room and shut the door. He hadn’t said another word, yet it felt as if he had said everything.

Lillian Hughes stared at the closed black door, biting her lower lip in shame and indignation. ’How could she possibly be okay with this?’

Randall Jennings was her ideal man. Even though he was eight years older than her, was there any woman in Lorcain who didn’t feel a sense of admiration when his name was mentioned?

She had graduated from a prestigious university abroad, and with her outstanding family background and personal qualifications, her standards for a partner were sky-high. Only a man like Randall Jennings could make her willingly submit, even going to the trouble of bringing him lunch every single day.

She had thought that she’d earned Randall Jennings’s favor because she was so unique and exceptional. For a while, she’d felt an undeniable sense of superiority and gotten a little carried away.

But she never imagined that because of some person of completely unknown status, Randall Jennings would tell her, "You don’t need to come anymore."

She wasn’t resigned to it, nor would she accept it.

But she didn’t press the issue today. She knew it would be useless and would only make Randall resent her more.

After composing herself, she left the office and found Secretary Lawson.

"Secretary Lawson, Randall seemed to place great importance on his guest today. Are you sure you don’t know who she is?"

Secretary Lawson had no idea what had just happened in the office. He quickly replied, "My apologies, Miss Hughes. My mind went blank for a moment, and I couldn’t place Ms. Sterling. I do know who she is, actually. During the National Day holiday, the Chairman went to Veridia on a business trip, and one day..."

As Secretary Lawson recounted the events of that day, the displeasure and jealousy in Lillian Hughes’s heart began to dissipate.

Her mind had been racing with countless possibilities about the relationship between Randall and this Ms. Sterling, but she never would have guessed that Ms. Sterling was the one who had saved his life.

"I see. This Ms. Sterling saved Randall’s life, so he’s treating her with such respect out of gratitude." As Lillian Hughes spoke, she couldn’t suppress the smile spreading across her face.

Secretary Lawson nodded in agreement. "That’s right."

’So when Randall got angry just now, it was probably because I didn’t show his savior proper respect...’

At this thought, Lillian Hughes sighed in frustration. ’Honestly, Randall... Why couldn’t he have just explained things more clearly?’

What Lillian Hughes failed to grasp, however, was that given the current state of her relationship with Randall Jennings, he had no reason to proactively explain his personal affairs to her.

"Secretary Lawson, do you have this Ms. Sterling’s phone number?"

Secretary Lawson was taken aback for a moment. He did have the number; after all, he was the one who had helped the Chairman find Ms. Sterling.

’But why would Miss Hughes suddenly want Ms. Sterling’s number?’

Unsure of her motives, Secretary Lawson cautiously shook his head. "I don’t have it. I only know she’s from Veridia."

’If Miss Hughes wanted Ms. Sterling’s contact information, she could just ask the Chairman herself,’ Secretary Lawson thought. ’I’m not about to take on that unknown risk for no reason.’

Lillian Hughes didn’t give it much thought and simply nodded lightly. Then, with a troubled expression, she pleaded with him, "Secretary Lawson, I think I upset Randall today. Could you try to put in a good word for me later?"

Secretary Lawson was immediately on alert, but his expression didn’t change as he asked, "Oh? Why is that?"

’Although the Chairman is a powerful man, he’s always emotionally stable. In all my years by his side, I’ve rarely seen him get genuinely angry.’

"Maybe the lunch I prepared wasn’t to his liking. I didn’t know he’s allergic to Chia Seeds."

Secretary Lawson knew she was lying the moment he heard her. ’Ms. Sterling brought God Jumps Over the Wall. The Chairman wouldn’t get angry with her over lunch.’

But he feigned understanding and nodded. "That’s a small matter. The Chairman won’t hold it against you."

"Then, later, after he’s cooled down, could you try to feel him out for me? See if he still wants me to come by tomorrow."

Secretary Lawson agreed outwardly, but inwardly, he had no intention of getting involved.

’A secretary capable of working so closely with Randall Jennings couldn’t possibly miss the subtle politics in these small matters. It was obvious Miss Hughes had crossed a line with the Chairman. She probably wouldn’t be getting a chance to come up to the top floor of the Jennings Group building anymore.’

Meanwhile, on her way back, Jasmine Sterling couldn’t help but quietly blame herself. She chided herself for visiting so rashly at the wrong time, interrupting Mr. Jennings’s private lunch with his girlfriend.

Even though Mr. Jennings had treated her with warmth and courtesy, that was a testament to his good breeding. She, on the other hand, had been far too presumptuous today.

The feeling of unease stayed with her all the way home. After mulling it over, she took out her phone and sent an apology text to Randall Jennings: "Mr. Jennings, I’m so sorry for the disturbance today. My only intention was to thank you on my daughter’s behalf. Please forgive me if I was out of line in any way."

The root of her cautiousness and anxiety was the fear that her misstep would have consequences for her daughter.

But she received no reply to her text, which only made Jasmine Sterling more distracted and on edge all afternoon. It solidified her belief that she had truly upset Mr. Jennings.

Just as dusk began to fall, she heard a sound from outside. Cecilia Sterling was back.

Estelle Goodman and Blair Golding were with her.

"Mom, I brought my roommates home!"

Jasmine Sterling collected her thoughts and hurried to the entryway to greet them. The first person she saw was Blair, with her ear-length short hair, followed by the radiant Estelle Goodman.

"Hello, Ma’am. I’m Estelle."

"Hello, Ma’am. I’m Blair."

Jasmine Sterling greeted them warmly. "Hello, both of you. Please, come in."

"Are your exams over?" Jasmine Sterling asked casually as she took her daughter’s coat.

"Not yet. One more day tomorrow."

When they entered the living room, Cecilia Sterling was surprised to find the dining table empty. She turned to her mother. "Mom, you haven’t cooked?"

She knew her mother. Having been told in advance that she was bringing friends home for dinner, her mother would have certainly started preparing the meal early. That’s why she was so surprised.

Having been distracted all afternoon, Jasmine Sterling hadn’t noticed the time. "I can cook quickly," she said hurriedly. "The God Jumps Over the Wall is ready. If you’re hungry, you can have a bowl of that to start. I’ll go make the other dishes now."

Cecilia Sterling was incredibly perceptive. Even though her mother was trying her best to act natural, everything felt so abnormal. How could she not be suspicious?

It didn’t matter whether dinner was made or not. What she was afraid of was that her mother was hiding something from her.

"Did you go out this afternoon?"

"Ah..." Jasmine Sterling’s first instinct was to deny it, but the words wouldn’t come out right. "Yes, I... I just went out for a stroll."
