Red Monster

Chapter 149: In Red’s Favor

The Goblin Champion might not have expected Red to suddenly cast the Fireball. He froze for a moment when he saw the swirling fire formed in Red’s hand. The distance between them was close; it would be hard for him to dodge the fireball. The Goblin Champion blanked at that moment.

That was when the Chief interfered. He landed right next to Red, grabbed Red’s wrist, and directed it upward.

Swoosh!

BOOOOM!

The fireball was shot upward and hit the branch. It detonated with a big blast as the raging fire expanded outward. The shock wave and the heat wave spread out, causing the goblins and hobgoblins to scream. The splinters from the big branch were hurtling in all directions like arrows.

The big chunk of the branch that was triple the hobgoblin size fell off. It was fortunate there was no one close by. The goblin and the hobgoblins had already fled when the Goblin Champion came for Red. They fled further when they saw the fire.

A loud thud echoed as the branch rolled. The Chief stopped the tree with his free hand. He remained calm throughout the entire thing. Then he threw Red toward the tree. Red’s body slammed hard toward the tree, grunting in pain.

Then the Chief turned around toward the Goblin Champion. He walked toward the stunned Goblin Champion, grabbed the neck before sending a punch to the guts.

The Goblin Champion tumbled to his knees, snapped out of his trance. But he quickly got back on his feet, pointing his axe again toward where Red was supposed to be. "He wants to kill me!"

The Goblin Champion screamed in the face of the Chief. That earned him a slap from the Chief. "I will also shoot a fireball if you point your weapon at me!"

He was calm, yet his voice carried authority that forced the Goblin Champion to listen.

Then he turned around to see Red and was surprised because he could not find Red. His eyes darted around, trying to find Red. So did the Goblin Champion, trying to find Red as well.

The Chief’s head snapped upward, looking toward the top of the tree. He could not see anything because of the thick canopy, but he could tell Red was above them right now.

"Come down and talk it out!" The Chief raised his voice.

"I am here!" Red came down, but he was already five trees away from where the Goblin Champion was. That showed that he could escape if he wanted to, and there was nothing they could do.

"Come here!" The Chief ordered.

"Unless you can restrain that fool, then I am not going to come close!" Red defied the order. The order didn’t really matter if he could not keep his life.

He had already fired the fireball, already crossing the line. Defying that stupid order would not change anything.

"I will. Now come here!" The Chief raised his voice even further.

Red gritted his teeth. The thought of running away crossed his mind. He would make it back to the village faster than anyone, then he would bring Darla with him. But that was the problem; he didn’t know where to bring her.

’I need to find the way to where humans live, a way to escape this jungle... After this war.’

He pulled the cloth off his sword, then he walked toward the Chief. He was alert, ready to fight at any time. The Goblin Champion’s eyes were on him all the time. The fireball was not enough to scare the stupid Goblin Champion, as he could see the deeper resentment in his eyes.

He arrived in front of the Chief, not really close, though. There was this protruding root that separated them. He purposely stopped there, not getting any closer. His eyes were on the Goblin Champion all the time, on alert.

"Why did you take the loot without my permission?" The Chief questioned him.

"Because it’s my loot. I killed it, so it’s mine!" Red answered straightforwardly, "I don’t want to be taken by others!"

"You are not in the battle. I didn’t see you! How—"

The Chief interrupted the Goblin Champion, "Shut up. I am the one who will speak! Stop screaming in my ears, you moron!"

That silenced the Goblin Champion, but it just fueled more hatred in the Goblin Champion. He blamed Red for what happened.

"How are you going to prove they are your kill?"

"Easy! I already found another one. Wait a moment."

Red left for a moment and returned while dragging two Kobold Scouts. He threw them in front of the Chief. "They are wearing cloaks, and this arrow. This is proof that I shot them!"

"You can’t find them among the kobolds in the ambush because they are on top of the tree! I shot them down before they could attack our people!"

Red raised his voice, "What did this fool say again? I didn’t join the battle? I risked my life by luring all of them here, by myself!" He then pointed at the wound on his forearm and thigh. "They almost caught me, but I still managed to bring them here!"

"This is my plan! I am the bait by risking my life! I have my own battle too! How dare this fool say I didn’t join the battle!"

For the first time, Red finally released his frustration. "Can many of us survive if we fight them head-on? It’s all thanks to me that we can kill so many kobolds without a lot of us dying!"

"That’s enough! Get your loot! And you can take two elites as well!"

Red felt a lot better after venting his frustration. He didn’t really care about the two extra Elite Kobold Fighters. His chest felt relieved, as if something that had been bothering him was gone, and it actually felt good. Not as good as when he was doing it, Darla, but it still felt good.

He exchanged the two Kobold Scouts’ bodies in front of him for loot. No one was around to see it, as the Chief and the Goblin Champion turned their backs on him.

He quickly absorbed them before anyone could see it. Six inferior cores: two Might Cores and four Magic Cores.
