Evangeline’s time at the academy could be summarized as both pleasant and boring. Living here was quite a nice change of pace from what she was used to, and interacting with those her age was a pleasant experience.
And boring, because the routine was getting repetitive.
When she had first gained the ability to use mana, she was rather excited to learn more and improve further. But at this point, that fascination was no longer there since using mana had become something normal to her.
And so, this daily routine of training spellcasting, combined with the lectures, had started becoming boring and sometimes downright tedious.
She sighed.
’Ugh, what is making friends so hard...?’
She had indeed started interacting with a few kids her age, but they had yet to reach a point where she would be able to confidently call them her friends.
Sitting on a random seat in the middle of a lecture hall, she finally saw the professor arrive.
’Which subject’s lecture was this? Ah, right, it was history.’
The professor soon began his lecture.
"So in today’s lecture, I am going to tell you about the first era, the Era of Terror."
Evangeline supported her chin with one hand as she listened. There was a bored expression on her face.
’Era of terror, is it?’
From what she had learned, they were currently living in the Era of War, where a deadlock had caused a never-ending war that had lasted for hundreds of years and still showed no signs of ending.
The professor continued.
"The Era of Terror is called the first era, as it involves the time when the world was not dominated by the intelligent races. It is said to be the darkest time of the human race. In that era, mythical beings roamed the lands, and all other living beings, including humans, were nothing but food to them, living in terror."
Trying to pass the time, Evangeline began scribbling on a page from the bundle of pages on her desk. These pages were supposed to be used for writing notes from the lectures, but...
’I’m not good at taking notes, so whatever.’
"Among those mythical beings, there were those who stood at the top and ruled over all. The first was known as the Conqueror of the Deep Seas. It was a being that ruled over all creatures that lived in the bottomless seas. It is said that no other being living in the sea could even come close to the might of the Conqueror of the Deep Seas."
Evangeline drew a big fish with sharp teeth and a long tail. Its body was filled with scars, and there was a scary look in its eyes. Below that fish, she wrote:
{Conqueror of the Deep Seas}
"The second was the Monarch of the Land. It was a colossal being whose steps were said to shake the very earth when it walked. No land creature could ever hope to challenge the might of the Monarch of the Land."
Evangeline drew a giant gorilla that was bigger than a mountain. She gave the gorilla an ugly face. After thinking a bit more, she made its face even uglier. It was to the point that it looked scary.
’Perfect.’
Below the giant ugly gorilla, she wrote:
{Monarch of the Land}
"The third was a being that dwelled beneath the earth, swimming in magma. It usually remained dormant deep within the earth, but there were times when it would come to the surface through the volcanoes. It was known as the King of the Scorching Earth."
Evangeline drew an eel that was swimming in magma, but her hand came to a sudden pause midway. After a few moments of contemplation, she erased it and drew a giant earthworm made of lava. She gave it two black dots for eyes. Below the earthworm, she wrote:
{King of the Scorching Earth}
"And the fourth and last one was a being about whom we have very little information. It was said to be the mightiest of all the creatures capable of flight. It was known as the Supreme Ruler of the Dark Skies."
Evangeline hovered the tip of the quill over the page as she contemplated. In the end, she drew a giant bird wearing a crown. Below it, she wrote:
{Supreme Ruler of the Dark Skies}
"The Conqueror, the King, the Monarch, and the Supreme Ruler were all at each other’s throats, wishing to destroy the other three. But this conflict entered a deadlock where all of them kept each other in check. It was a situation much like the current deadlock between the alliance, the kingdom, the empire, and the theocracy."
Evangeline drew a square and added the four with one on each corner, eyeing each other. In the center of the square, she wrote:
{Deadlock}
"This deadlock persisted for hundreds of years, and the four mythical rulers only grew stronger with time. The humanoid races were on the verge of being wiped out after they were excessively hunted. But that was when a change finally happened. The Supreme Ruler disappeared one day, as if vanishing from the world itself, never to be found. His disappearance finally broke the deadlock that had persisted for so long."
Evangeline erased the giant crowned bird, leaving one corner of the square empty.
"And so, the three mythical beings fought each other to the death. Their battle is said to have changed the world’s map itself. The King was dragged to the sea by the Conqueror, meeting its end there. And after that came a drawn-out battle between the Conqueror and the Monarch. In the end, the Monarch came out on top. But the Monarch had sustained a lot of grievous wounds from that battle, so it went into hiding to heal itself and was never seen again. It was said that it succumbed to its injuries. With all the mythical rulers now gone, the tyranny of the mythical creatures was gone as well. That was how the Era of Terror came to an end."
Evangeline drew the big fish dragging the giant lava worm into the water.
Since the worm was made of lava, it turned into a volcanic rock after being cooled down, only to shatter moments later. After that, the fish and the ugly gorilla began having a catfight. In the end, the gorilla ate the fish. But since the gorilla was a herbivore, it ended up puking and getting a bad stomach. It went into hiding to recover, never to be seen again.
Evangeline’s hand suddenly paused as her disinterested eyes focused on the page she was drawing on.
Her eyes slowly widened.
’Damn! It almost looks like a manga panel. Maybe I have talent for this? Ah, I should’ve become a manga artist in my previous life instead of wasting it away meaninglessly like that...’
The professor’s voice brought her out of her thoughts.
"With this, I announce the end of this lecture. You may all leave now. Oh, and if someone has any questions, they can stay."
Evangeline stood up from her seat and left the lecture hall along with several other cadets.
’Today is the day, right?’
Adrian had been cooped up in the academy city’s grand library for weeks now. But there were days when he would come out for rest. Today was such a day.
’I am going to take it from him this time, no matter what!’
