Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth

Chapter 199: Facing a storm (1)

Looking into the distance, Evangeline muttered unconsciously.

"A storm..."

Indeed. Far into the distance, they could see thick, dark clouds. The wind had grown fiercer and colder, and there was an eerie stillness to the sea’s atmosphere.

The signs were clear: a storm was coming.

She turned to Adrian and asked tensely.

"Adi, is this gonna be something bad?"

She didn’t really know much about the sea, but in pirate movies she had watched back on Earth, storms were always shown as a huge problem.

It was Xion who answered.

"No need to worry, Miss Evangeline, a measly storm isn’t going to sink this ship. In fact, I can hardly think of anything that can sink a ship like this easily."

But as he was speaking, the captain of the ship—a middle-aged man—arrived near them and looked into the distance with a tense expression.

He gritted his teeth.

"Shit, just my luck. I shouldn’t have eaten breakfast."

Adrian and Xion furrowed their brows as they heard him curse.

"Excuse me, good sir." The commoner boy tapped on the captain’s shoulder. "Is there a problem? Isn’t it just a storm?"

"Like hell it is." The captain frowned. "That’s one hell of a storm. And it might not be enough to sink the ship, but you can bet that it’s not gonna be smooth sailing either. Besides, if a storm that huge hits, then it would disrupt the environment of the sea. When that happens, sea creatures usually leave the waters and reach for solid ground. And since nothing like that is anywhere around, they’re going to climb onto this ship. I know for sure it’s going to be an absolute shitshow."

Evangeline felt conflicted as she listened to the captain. On one hand, she was feeling quite excited since she was going to experience a sea storm for the first time. But on the other hand, things didn’t look very good from the way the captain was speaking.

But just then, Xion shook his head and spoke in a reassuring tone.

"Don’t you worry, good sir; we’ll deal with any seabeast or monster that climbs up the deck." He turned to Adrian. "Don’t you think this will be a good opportunity to practice our teamwork in a low-stakes battle?"

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

"What makes you think this battle will be low-stakes?"

"Isn’t that obvious?" The commoner boy smiled. "If a creature is strong enough, it won’t be all that affected by something like a storm. Only sea creatures who are around Phase Two or Phase Three would search for a surface to save themselves from the storm."

Adrian nodded after thinking for a bit.

"Fair enough. Then we can battle those sea creatures until the storm passes. Though I don’t believe the fight will be as easy as you are making it out to be. We will need to fight in the middle of the storm, which I doubt will be simple."

He glanced at Saria, who stood with her back against the railing, looking at the sky with her eyes closed.

"Does that sound good to you as well, or are you uncomfortable fighting on a moving ship?"

She frowned and turned in Adrian’s direction.

"Do you take me as a coward? Or are you mocking me?"

Evangeline sighed.

’I don’t think he meant either of those things. It’s probably gonna be hard to fight in close combat if the ship tilts and shakes too much. Forget about fighting; they wouldn’t even be able to stand still properly.’

Well, she wasn’t a close combat fighter, so she probably wouldn’t know.

And then, Adrian turned to her.

"You should stay out of this battle. Your spells are quite destructive, and I would like to minimize the damage the ship receives from our battle. We have to return too, after all."

Xion tilted his head.

"So she won’t be fighting? Well, it makes sense. Guess it’ll only be the three of us then."

’So I have to sit back for this? Not gonna!’

She raised her hand.

"I can still help, you know."

One of the reasons she had been so confident in coming to the sea adventure was that she held an advantage here. After all, water was the element she was most proficient with among her four elemental affinities.

And more than anything, she knew the Ruler of Waves spell. It was a spell that was created two hundred years ago by one of the greatest sailors and sea explorers.

She spoke confidently.

"I can make sure that the ship isn’t hit by a huge wave and that it remains stable enough for you three to fight."

She would’ve liked to assist them through water attacks as well, but since she was only a Phase Three, keeping the waves away would probably consume all her mana.

Adrian thought for a bit, then nodded.

"Fine."

And so they began preparing.

The two people who were supposed to be part of the maintenance crew began preparing the ship to weather the storm.

The four of them changed into lighter clothes that wouldn’t hold them back even when completely drenched. Saria stood at the front holding chains with weights attached to both ends. Xion stood beside her with a shortsword in each hand. Evangeline stood a bit further back with a crown made of water above her head, and Adrian was only a meter ahead of her with a sword in hand.

He wasn’t using the lightning sword she had created for him, but it was likely because water would easily conduct lightning, and using it in the middle of a storm could be disastrous for everyone.

’He also said that he is uniquely strong against beasts and monsters since they don’t cover their bodies in mana. Whatever that means...’

The dark clouds approached closer with each passing moment, and soon... the storm was upon them.

"Hmp!"

Evangeline exerted her authority over the water, making sure that none of it reached the deck. It was as though an invisible dome had formed above the ship that was blocking all the water. Waves rose one after another, but she stopped them before they crashed onto the ship.

"Ugh!"

Evangeline gritted her teeth. It was as though she were stopping a massive boulder alone with her hands. Stopping each wave consumed a chunk of her mana, and a lot of it was being consumed rapidly as she continued keeping the water away from the ship.

’I don’t think... I can last until the end of the storm.’

Ahead of her, she could already see creatures climbing onto the deck.

A creature that looked like an alligator with a somewhat humanoid physical structure and slimy green skin was the first to climb onto the deck. But the moment it did, platinum chains wrapped around its neck with abnormal precision.

And the next moment, Saria spun the creature in the air and threw it into the distance along with the platinum chains. Moments later, she materialized a platinum axe in her hands.

More and more creatures were climbing onto the deck. Many of them looked similar to that humanoid alligator, while there were various other kinds of beings as well.

Saria, Xion, and Adrian adjusted their stance, ready for the battle.
