The entire kingdom seemingly consisted of a single large city. It would take quite a long time for them to reach the center if they were to walk there, so they had decided to use their Phase Three strength to jump from one building to another to reach their destination more quickly.
Adrian had initially been against this idea since the buildings clearly looked extremely old and one of them could collapse at any moment.
Even though the strength increase of Phase Three had made their bodies far more resilient than before, they would still take significant damage if they fell from such a height.
But contrary to what he had expected, the buildings didn’t seem as fragile as he had initially thought despite their worn-down state.
At this height, they were able to get a better look at the city. And contrary to what they had expected, the city wasn’t flat. It was made on a slope, with the center of the city being elevated a hundred meters.
’I see. So this is how they got so much stone to build all this.’
Adrian had initially assumed that they had transported the stone in ships as cargo. But that didn’t seem too plausible since it would’ve taken an astronomical amount of resources to bring that much stone to this island.
But it seemed that there had been a mountain on this island once, and the people of that time had cut down the mountain to flatten the land and used the stone as building material. That was probably also why this city looked so organized and planned.
Usually, a city would start with a small village with only a few houses. Then the population of the village would grow, which would gradually transform it into a city. But this city didn’t seem to have gone through that phase.
Alisardarc’s voice brought him out of his thoughts.
[The Phase Four creature is not too far now.]
Adrian looked into the distance.
He couldn’t spot any creature, but he did spot something.
Far ahead, in the center of the city, stood a beautiful castle made entirely of pure white stone, with a hemispherical dome. It was hard to make out the details from the distance, but he couldn’t spot any vegetation growing on it, unlike all other buildings in the city.
More than anything, Adrian could see the large bluish aura surrounding the pure white castle, just as Alisardarc had told them.
Adrian turned to Xion and Saria and asked.
"Does either of you know the boon one gains after reaching Phase Four? We are about to battle a Phase Four creature, so it would be better to know what it’s capable of before we engage in battle."
Every Phase had common boons, like an increase in physical strength and the mana pool growing larger. But there was also a unique boon for each Phase.
On Phase One—the Origin Phase—one gained the ability to awaken their Origin ability.
On Phase Two—the Revelation Phase—one gained the ability to perceive the presence of living beings.
On Phase Three—the Infusion Phase—one gained the ability to infuse their element into mana, which had a lot of uses.
Xion turned to Saria, signaling that he didn’t know. Saria opened her mouth while looking ahead.
"From what I know, the fourth and fifth Phases are different from the other Phases. They are like preparation Phases to make one ready for Phase Six. The Fourth Phase, also known as the Fortification Phase, restructures your body and changes it completely. After this restructuring, the body becomes far more efficient in channeling mana, and moving it becomes more natural. But more than anything, the strength increase that one receives is far greater than any other Phase."
’In short, the gap in physical strength between Phases will be far larger between Phase Three and Phase Four. Hmm... this might be a problem.’
Beasts and monsters often attacked primarily with their bodies instead of using mana. So in this case, their opponent was going to be at a greater advantage.
Evangeline spoke in a voice that lacked her usual enthusiasm, sounding somewhat grave.
"You both should be careful. Adi and I once fought a Phase Three to the death when we were Phase Two. That fight felt utterly hopeless, even though it was two against one. Even if there are four of us now, it wouldn’t make the fight any less challenging. Trust me, the gap between Phases is no joke."
Xion smiled amicably.
"Oh, don’t you worry, Miss Evangeline, I am quite used to fighting against opponents who are on a higher Phase than me."
Saria snorted.
"Humph. Girl, you have the mindset of the weak. If you cower in the face of an obstacle, then you will never be able to overcome it."
Evangeline frowned. After thinking for a bit, she opened her mouth.
"And if you are too reckless and crazy in the face of an obstacle, then you may end up crippled. You know, Mama and Papa often say that I’m quite a reckless girl, but even I am not as reckless as you."
"Is that so...?" Saria’s lips curled up into a malicious smile. "Maybe that is why I knocked your teeth out in our duel back then."
"Hey! Why are you bringing the duel into this? Are you a kid?"
"The kid here is you. A kid who wanted to go on a sea adventure."
Adrian let out a sigh filled with frustration.
"Knock it off, both of you."
Evangeline shut her mouth. With nobody to argue with, Saria also quieted down.
Just then, Alisardarc’s voice came once again.
[We are here.]
Adrian and the others looked ahead. Indeed, they could see a large presence about a hundred meters ahead. Judging by the size of the presence alone, it seemed that the creature they were about to fight had lived for quite a long time.
Jumping from one building to another, they finally reached what appeared to be a large field surrounded by a metal fence.
And in that field was the creature they were supposed to battle.
It looked like a tiger the size of a house, curled up on the ground, sleeping. The difference was that the being’s entire body seemed to be made of a blue crystal. It looked less like a living being and more like a crystal sculpture of a sleeping tiger.
Its rising and falling stomach, combined with the large bluish aura surrounding it, was the only indication that it really was a living being.
Adrian heard Xion mutter from the side.
"Oh, so it’s a crystal beast..."
He furrowed his brow.
’Crystal beast?’
That was the first time he had heard the term.
The commoner boy turned to him and spoke after thinking for a bit.
"According to what I know, this creature is a crystal beast, a type of monster. They come in various shapes and forms depending on where they live. This one seems to be in the form of a four-legged beast. Hmm... things aren’t looking good for us. Maybe we should rethink attacking it since it’s sleeping."
Adrian frowned.
’What’s with the sudden attitude change?’
Why weren’t things looking good for them? Xion was someone who always remained confident, so why was he suddenly behaving differently now?
