Evangeline blinked a few times.
And then blinked some more.
The scenery before her had changed. She could feel that she was lying on a soft surface and there was a tall ceiling before her eyes.
Yes, she was lying on a bed. There was even a blanket over her body.
’...The hell? What just happened?’
Wasn’t she in a throne room just now?
But as her thoughts were lost in confusion, she suddenly found something wiggling under the blanket, causing her body to unconsciously tense up.
’What was that?!’
After hesitating for a while, she slowly grabbed the edges of the blanket and removed it. But what she found was not something she had been expecting.
There was a black-haired girl under the blanket, sleeping while hugging Evangeline’s waist.
’What the...’
Who was this girl? Where did she come from?
Evangeline felt as though her mind had malfunctioned. But suddenly, the sleeping girl stirred.
Breaking the hug, she rubbed her eyes while yawning. But as her turquoise eyes settled on Evangeline’s face, the girl froze.
The two of them looked at each other blankly for a while. Then, suddenly, the girl’s eyes widened.
"How the hell did one of you already get here?! The day has just started!"
’Huh?’
Before Evangeline could make sense of her words, she suddenly received a kick to her stomach that threw her off the bed, and her back was smashed against the wall.
"-Guh!"
Before she could make sense of anything, the girl jumped off the bed and rushed towards her. Grabbing her by the neck, the girl lifted her into the air and pierced her with a cold gaze.
"How did you enter the castle so quickly without me knowing? Tell me."
The girl tightened her grip on Evangeline’s neck, choking her further. Evangeline struggled to free herself from the girl’s grip, but her arm didn’t even budge.
’Just how strong is she?! Phase Four?!’
The look in the girl’s turquoise eyes turned even more intense.
"Are you not going to answer?"
Evangeline gritted her teeth and opened her mouth.
⪡"Release me this instant!"⪢
Those words caused an invisible ripple to spread through the surroundings, and the girl’s grip suddenly loosened, causing Evangeline to fall to the floor.
"Ugh."
That single, simple command had consumed more than half of her mana, making it clear that the girl was indeed at a higher Phase than her.
’I don’t know what’s happening, but I have to escape first.’
But the moment she had that thought, her face was suddenly smashed against the floor.
"Agh!"
The girl pinned her down on the ground and climbed on top of her. Evangeline hurriedly opened her mouth to issue a command using Vox Imperium, but the girl covered her mouth with one hand, keeping her from speaking.
"So you have the ability to control others with your voice, huh? Does it work on relics too? Is that how you were able to enter my room so quickly?"
The girl looked at her curiously.
"Phase three, huh? Why have I never seen you before?"
Evangeline channeled mana into one of her bracelets and shot a wind blast, causing the girl to jump back and dodge.
"Huff... huff..." She looked at the girl and gritted her teeth. "I should be the one asking questions here. Who the hell are you, and where did you suddenly come from?"
The girl blinked.
"You are asking who I am? ...Didn’t you come here to kill me?"
Evangeline made a strange face.
"No, do I look like some assassin to you? I didn’t come here to kill anyone; I just came here to explore."
The girl tilted her head.
"Explore?"
"That’s right." Evangeline gritted her teeth. "I honestly didn’t really have any interest in exploring anything. I just wanted to go on a sea adventure! But since I was here anyway, I thought I might as well explore. But then I suddenly found myself lying in bed, with you cuddling with me. Am I not the one who should ask questions here?"
The girl’s expression grew stranger and stranger as Evangeline continued speaking.
"Sea adventure? Are you... a sailor from the continent?"
Evangeline furrowed her brow.
’Well, I don’t think I am a sailor, but I am from the continent, so...’
She nodded.
The girl thought for a bit, then asked.
"Which faction do you belong to?"
’Which faction? Do I belong to some faction?’
Suddenly, the information about the imperial nobles and ancient nobles surfaced in her mind.
’Since I’m engaged to Adi, that makes me part of House Ravenshade. And that would mean...’
"I am from the ancient noble faction."
Well, technically, she was not yet part of that faction, but still...
Hearing her, the girl tilted her head in confusion.
"Ancient... noble faction? Did a fourth faction emerge as well? Things aren’t looking good for the continent. Well, whatever. So you don’t know why you are here, correct?"
Evangeline nodded.
The girl became lost in thought.
Meanwhile, Evangeline scanned the room she was in. It looked to be somewhere inside the castle they had entered.
’To think someone was living in the castle. The whole island and the city looked so abandoned that I wouldn’t have guessed.’
Should she take the girl to Adrian and the others? After all, why search for information when a living source of information is right in front of you?
But just as she was lost in thought...
BANG!
A loud noise rang, and the window on her right exploded, startling her.
"What the—!"
Before she could react, the entire castle shook.
"Shit!" The girl cursed. "It’s finally time. I wasted too much time with you!"
The girl hurriedly grabbed Evangeline’s hand and dashed out of the room, pulling her along.
Just as she left, there was another loud noise, and Evangeline saw debris flying out of the door. It was as though the entire wall had exploded this time.
Chills ran down her spine as she saw that.
’The hell is going on right now?!’
The girl ran through the castle’s large hallways while pulling Evangeline along. The castle shook more and more as they continued running, sometimes nearly losing balance.
There was a look of anger and frustration on the girl’s face as she pulled Evangeline along.
Suddenly the girl stopped in front of a room at the end of a turn.
"Huff... Huff... this should be it."
As she opened the door, Evangeline saw a dark room filled with various kinds of metal objects arranged in an organized manner. Ranging from swords to metal beams, there were a variety of things.
As Evangeline tilted her head in confusion, the girl looked around the dark room.
"Found it!"
She entered the room and picked up what appeared to be...
’Handcuffs?’
Moments later, Evangeline found her hands cuffed behind her back.
’Huh?’
The girl placed her hand on Evangeline’s shoulder.
"Honestly, I don’t think you are an assassin either. You seem too sloppy for that to be the case. And from what I understood, you are a victim too. Still, I can’t just take your word for it. I don’t have time to deal with you right now, so..."
Evangeline suddenly felt a sharp pain at the back of her head. Moments later, her vision began to darken, and her consciousness started to slip.
The last thing she heard was the girl’s voice.
"Sleep for now; I will deal with you in the next cycle."
