Regnum Aetern: Dual Rebirth

After a bit of walking, Adrian soon reached the dormitory.

Apparently, Nelliel was looking to meet him, and she must've had something important she wanted to share.

As he approached his room, Adrian found her standing by the door. She was carrying a wooden box covered with a white cloth.

As if noticing his presence, she turned her gaze to him and smiled.

"I see that you are finally here, 'Young Lord Adrian.' Thank you for coming so quickly."

Adrian calmly nodded and opened the door, inviting her in as he entered. As he closed the door, Nelliel sat down in the chair and let out a tired sigh.

"Brother, must you do this to me? Do you have any idea how much trouble I went through to get this inside the academy city?"

Adrian tilted his head.

"Why would you have to go through any trouble? It's not as though the mirror shard is an illegal object."

Since Nelliel was technically his maid, he had ordered her to bring him the mirror shard that he had to give to that Grade Three fragment relic. The excuse he had made was that he was in the process of creating a spell that had to do with his Origin ability, so he needed the mirror shard to conduct a few experiments.

And as he had expected, his mother approved without much trouble.

Nelliel shook her head.

"No, this is not the mirror shard. That will be delivered by a knight before tomorrow evening, since it's a somewhat important object. Besides, did you already forget?"

She removed the white cloth and opened the wooden box, revealing what was inside.

Adrian paused.

Inside it was a small snake about a meter or two long. It was pure white from head to toe. Two tiny white antlers were sprouting from its back. And it had a pair of bat-like white wings that were currently folded neatly and clung to its body.

The winged serpent raised its head and looked at him with a curious gaze.

Nelliel looked at him with a frown.

"Brother, don't tell me you forgot about this."

Adrian shook his head.

"No, not at all. In fact, I have been waiting for it for quite a while now."

A few weeks ago, he had asked Nelliel to bring him this baby winged serpent, and it seemed that the girl took so much time because she had to struggle a lot to bring it into the academy city.

As Adrian observed the serpent, she asked curiously.

"By the way, Brother. I'm a bit curious about what you will do with this serpent."

Adrian replied in his usual tone.

"You have no use for this thing until it grows large, so I thought that I should make use of it until then."

Adrian wanted to test out his mind realm engraving, but he could not test it on people for obvious reasons. He had been unable to find a beast or monster in the academy city, so he had yet to test it.

The only other way was to test it on a beast he encountered during the mission. But during the island exploration mission, he had been so occupied with fighting off the sea creatures that he didn't get the opportunity to capture one.

In the end, the only options left were to either wait for the next month's mission or use this snake instead.

He reached out and grabbed the serpent, taking it out of the wooden box as the creature flailed around in his hand.

"I will be using it as a test subject for my experiments from now on. I will try not to damage this thing physically, but I can't say much for the mental damage."

Nelliel smiled.

"Oh, you don't need to worry about that. After all, we only need its skin. You can make use of it as you desire."

Saying that, she stood up.

"Well, I better go now. There is a ton of stuff I need to do. I will deliver the report related to the cult soon."

With that, she left and closed the door, leaving Adrian alone with the winged baby serpent.

He observed the creature curiously.

"It really does have wings, but can it fly? And do the wings get in the way when it sheds its skin? What are the antlers for, anyway?"

But of course, there was no way the serpent could answer him, so it only looked at him innocently.

After a while, Adrian sat down on the bed and took a deep breath.

'Let's do this.'

It was finally time to test out the mind realm engraving he had recreated.

He had cross-checked multiple times, and he was pretty confident that it would work. And even if something went haywire, it wouldn't be much of a problem since the baby white serpent wasn't capable of causing harm ‌to him.

He channeled his mana into the engraving on his forearm, which caused it to glow with bluish light. Suddenly, his vision shifted, and Adrian found himself lying on the bonnet of a supercar, soaking wet from head to toe.

Several water droplets dripped onto his eyes the next moment, causing him to close them instinctively.

"Uh?"

After he opened his eyes again, he saw that it was raining heavily in the immutable world, at least in the location where he was.

The sky above was covered in thick, dark clouds, making the surroundings somewhat dark.

Adrian quickly turned to look at his hand. And he was holding the baby white serpent that was looking around in surprise and confusion.

He clenched his fist.

'It really did work.'

He had successfully brought the baby serpent into his mind realm, which meant that the engraving was working as it should.

'I need to do some tests. But first, I should take shelter from the rain.'

He got off the car and entered the nearest store, which turned out to be a bookstore. The interior was rather dark, and it took him some time to find the switches for the lights.

Sitting in the receptionist's seat, he turned his attention to the baby winged serpent.

'Let's see…'

And so, he performed a series of tests.

The first test was obviously to change the time discrepancy of the immutable world using the analog wristwatch. Adrian wanted to see if something would happen since the serpent was technically not part of the immutable world.

But it went as usual, and there was nothing strange.

After that, Adrian tried to test whether he could leave the immutable world while keeping the baby serpent inside.

He felt it was possible, but he didn't try it in the end because he wouldn't know what would happen if he left the baby serpent's consciousness in the immutable world without being there to watch it.

He conducted several other tests as well, which allowed him to learn quite a lot.

Apparently, the rules of the mind realm applied to both parties, which meant that no matter who or what he pulled into the immutable world, they would be incapable of using mana or their Origin ability. All they would have is their physical strength, which was the same as in the real world.

Adrian also wanted to know what would happen in a scenario where he pulls someone's consciousness into his mind realm and then kills their original body. Would the consciousness in the immutable world also die?

But that wouldn't make sense since the act of pulling a consciousness into the mind realm was an act of temporarily severing the connection between the body and the consciousness.

'In the end, I don't have a way to test this since that would require me to kill the baby serpent. I mean, I can, but it's probably not worth it.'

The serpent was worth more alive than dead. Well, technically, they were going to skin it eventually, but they had to let it grow first.

By the end of all the experiments, Adrian was left with two questions. The first question was:

'What would happen if someone killed my consciousness in the immutable world? Would their consciousness be ejected back into their bodies, or would they be able to take over my body?'

The first possibility seemed more likely, but the second possibility also had a fair chance of being true. Or there was also the possibility that his consciousness could not be killed in the immutable world, but he seriously doubted that to be the case.

'After all, that would be too good to be true.'

The second and most important question was:

'What are the conditions one needs to fulfill in order to escape the mind realm? Do they need to kill me, or is it something else?'

This was the question he needed to find answers to first. After all, if he hoped to use the mind realm against enemies, then he needed to understand these rules first.

'Well, this turned out to be quite fruitful either way. I now know that the mind realm engraving works perfectly.'

And with that, Adrian pulled his and the serpent's consciousness out of the immutable world
