A faint point of light appeared in front of Jun’Tal’s palm.
Ning immediately sensed that it was smaller than the first attempt, but not nearly small enough.
The energy burst outward with another sharp explosion, blasting sand into the air and carving a second crater into the beach. It was smaller than the first one, but still far beyond anything that could be called controlled.
Jun’Tal was thrown back like a ragdoll, but this time Ning didn’t bother catching him. He wouldn’t.
Jun’Tal hit the side of a coconut tree, spun around, and hit another one before landing on the sand. He slowly got up and spat out some sand that had gotten into his mouth.
"Oww..."
"You’re hurt?" Ning asked, a little taken aback.
"My head hurts," Jun’Tal said, grabbing his forehead. "Did I do too much again?"
Ning nodded. "Too much water."
"But I did what you said. I didn’t use much water at all," the young boy said.
Ning shrugged. "Stop focusing on water. Start focusing on the energy you’re producing."
Jun’Tal’s eyes narrowed for a moment as he thought about Ning’s suggestion.
"Stand up already," Ning said in a stricter voice. "You need to try again."
"How many times am I supposed to do this?"
"As many as it takes."
Jun’Tal gave him an annoyed look. The boy looked back at the crater, and after a moment, some of the frustration left his face.
There was no shortcut Ning could give him.
His ability was powerful enough that even the smallest mistake could become catastrophic, which meant he would have to learn control at a level far beyond what most awakened people ever needed.
His second attempt had already been better than his first, but the difference was nowhere near enough.
They would have to keep going for a long time before Jun’Tal could use his power without turning the ground in front of him into a crater.
By the time evening arrived, Jun’Tal had improved enough that Ning no longer had to worry about a crater appearing every time the boy used his ability. The explosions were still violent, and each attempt sent a sharp burst of energy through the air, but the amount had fallen considerably compared to what he had produced earlier in the day.
Jun’Tal stood near the edge of the beach with both hands held in front of him, concentrating on the smallest amount of moisture he could manage. A faint flash appeared between his palms before the air popped violently, pushing him several steps backward and scattering a thin layer of sand around his feet.
He caught himself before falling and immediately looked toward Ning.
"Better?"
"Better," Ning said. "Still too much."
Jun’Tal sighed and looked toward the stretch of beach behind him, where dozens of marks showed the results of several hours of repeated attempts. The earliest ones were large craters surrounded by melted sand and glass, while the later ones had slowly become smaller until they were little more than shallow depressions.
At least the progress was obvious.
The problem was that even Jun’Tal’s weakest attempts were still violent enough to push him backward, and Ning did not consider that good enough for someone whose smallest mistake could release an absurd amount of energy.
"Again," Jun’Tal said, stepping forward.
Ning shook his head.
"No. That’s enough for today."
Jun’Tal looked back at him in surprise. "Why? I’m getting better."
"You are, but you’ve been doing this for hours."
Jun’Tal shrugged. "Yeah, but I’m not tired."
Ning studied him for a moment and realized the boy was telling the truth. Jun’Tal had spent most of the day repeatedly activating an ability powerful enough to destroy the beach around him, yet his breathing remained normal, and there was no obvious exhaustion in his movements.
His changed body was probably responsible for that as well. Was he passively converting water into energy to keep himself going?
Even if that was the case, Ning had no intention of letting him continue without stopping.
"You don’t need to feel tired for rest to be useful," Ning said. "Pushing yourself endlessly just because you can isn’t a good habit, especially when you’re still learning something this dangerous."
Jun’Tal frowned. "But every time I try, I get a little better."
"And you can continue tomorrow."
The boy looked toward his hands, clearly unhappy with the idea of stopping when he had finally started seeing progress.
He wanted to get good enough so that he could return home.
"You need to rest even when you don’t want to," Ning said. "That doesn’t mean we have to stop testing everything, though."
Jun’Tal looked up again.
"What else are we testing?"
Ning smiled slightly.
"You are getting better at converting energy when you want to. What about when you don’t want to?" Ning asked. "That’s what our main concern is, isn’t it?"
The boy’s expression changed immediately. "Yes. So am I just resting and hoping I don’t do anything?"
"Something like that," Ning said. "We’re going to be a little more active to test how you handle a change in emotion."
"My emotions?" the young boy asked.
"Yes. We’re going to test what happens when you’re scared, angry, distracted, or surprised."
Jun’Tal looked uneasy.
"What exactly are you planning to do?"
Ning turned away from the shoreline and started walking back toward the shelter.
"You’re going to watch a movie."
Jun’Tal stared at his back before following.
"A movie? What kind of movie?"
Ning glanced over his shoulder.
"A horror movie."
Jun’Tal stopped walking for a moment.
He seemed to wait for Ning to admit that he was joking, but when no explanation came, the boy hurried after him.
"You’re testing my dangerous ability by scaring me?"
"Exactly."
"I... I don’t like horror movies."
"That’s much better," Ning said with a chuckle. "I’m going to have you watch the scariest one ever."
Even though the plan made perfect sense to Jun’Tal, he wanted to run away. There was never a world where he would ever want to watch horror movies of his own volition.
"A horror movie in the middle of nowhere forest," Jun’Tal said in a scared voice. "Might as well tell me to explode right now."
