Once Ning was done chatting with the two heroes, he sent Void back to his quarters with a snap of his finger.
Tarian looked at Ning with no small measure of awe when he saw him do that. "Is that your real power? Teleporting?"
"You could say that," Ning said.
Tarian nodded. "It wasn’t you that made me teleport back then, was it?"
Ning shook his head. "That’s entirely your power, isn’t it?"
Tarian fell silent for a moment and nodded. He rubbed his forehead, still slightly taken aback.
"No one is supposed to really know what my power is. Not even my family or my closest confidant know exactly what it is. They just have the barest idea," he said.
"Well, Perfect Defense is a very strong power, so I’m not surprised," Ning answered. "I suppose you can’t do much with it, but it will always make sure that you are never hurt."
Tarian slowly nodded.
"That means I must’ve been in some sort of danger when I tried to stop you today. My powers decided the way to protect me was to teleport me far away."
Ning shrugged. "You were never in any danger from me, but I suppose your power didn’t know that. Anyway, I won’t tell anyone else about this, so rest assured. I’ll return once I’ve made sure the boy can handle his powers."
Tarian nodded finally, bidding Ning farewell.
Ning decided to chat with the president before going back, so he arrived in her quarters. The president was there with a bunch of other ministers, along with Farhand. Ning ignored everyone and told her the precise details of what he was doing.
He didn’t go into detail about Jun’Tal, just that he was training someone strong and would return once he was done with that.
The president could hardly say anything to that.
Then, Ning disappeared and went to Leamor’s quarters.
The man was surrounded by guards, but that didn’t stop Ning.
Before the man could say anything, Ning snapped his fingers, and the room froze as no one could move or say a thing.
Ning looked into the eyes of the High Elf. "What did I say? I would make sure you don’t get an easy death."
Ning teleported away after saying as much, and the people were finally freed. Just as they became free, Leamor screamed as unimaginable pain filled his entire body, lasting for nearly a minute before fading away.
Once done there, Ning returned to Jun’Tal and found him still asleep. He let him rest since he would have to work harder starting tomorrow.
Jun’Tal continued training for the next few days, and the improvement became obvious even to him. He could now activate his ability without being thrown backward, and the air in front of his hands no longer exploded every time he converted a small amount of liquid into energy.
Ning watched another attempt from several meters away as Jun’Tal focused on his palm and released a controlled amount of energy. There was still a noticeable disturbance in the air, but his feet remained planted in the sand, and nothing around him was damaged.
"That’s much better," Ning said. "But you still need more control."
Jun’Tal lowered his hand and looked toward him. "I’m not blowing holes into the beach anymore. How much better do I need to be?"
"Much better."
Ning reached down and picked up a dry twig from the ground before holding it out. Jun’Tal accepted it with a confused expression, turning the small piece of wood between his fingers.
"Burn it," Ning said.
Jun’Tal looked at the twig and then back at Ning. "How am I supposed to do that?"
Ning smiled slightly and gestured toward Jun’Tal’s hand. "Your ability creates pure energy, and energy doesn’t have to become an explosion every time you release it. If you control the amount properly, you can use that energy to excite the atoms in the air and create heat instead."
Jun’Tal listened carefully as Ning continued explaining. "As long as you don’t make the temperature too high or release the energy too suddenly, the heat can remain stable long enough to ignite something nearby."
Jun’Tal looked down at the twig again.
"I didn’t know it worked like that."
"Boy, you can create pure energy from matter. We haven’t even touched the tip of the iceberg on what your power can do."
Jun’Tal looked a little excited. He decided to try out what Ning told him to do. He held the twig on his palm and activated his power.
A wave of heat appeared almost immediately, and even though Jun’Tal controlled it, there was still a bit too much.
The air expanded violently around his hand, and the sudden pressure sent the twig flying several meters away before it landed in the sand.
Jun’Tal stared after it.
Ning sighed. "Too hot."
"I thought I was using less."
"That is still too much for the twig. Try spreading the conversion over a period of time. Spread out the energy."
Jun’Tal retrieved the twig and returned.
"Again?"
"Again."
He tried a second time, this time focusing less on producing energy and more on maintaining a small, steady amount. This time too, it was much too strong.
He tried again.
The next attempt lasted longer, although the temperature fluctuated enough that Ning could see the surrounding air repeatedly distort before settling again. Jun’Tal stopped and adjusted what he was doing, slowly becoming more careful with every attempt.
After several more tries, the energy finally stabilized.
There was no visible tongue of flame in Jun’Tal’s palm, but the air above his hand shimmered clearly from the sustained heat. Unlike his earlier attempts, there was no sudden expansion and no explosive release.
Jun’Tal stared at it.
"I think I’m doing it."
"Keep it steady," Ning said.
The boy concentrated harder and slowly brought the dry twig closer to his palm. The wood darkened almost immediately, smoke curling from its surface before one end suddenly caught fire.
Jun’Tal’s eyes widened.
The small flame continued burning.
Ning watched it for a moment before nodding with approval.
"Excellent work."
